You are welcome to listen in as I "explain things scientific". I have had great fun with lasers, robots and absorbing Quantum Physics. Now as a classroom teacher, laid low by heart surgery its time t... more

June 15, 2018Year 11 Physics syllabus - Content onlyReading the syllabus end to end, had too much complexity. Here I just focus on what is to be taught. There is some new content with determining the magnetic field out from a wire and with in solenoid http://www.oocities.org/soho/2003/em4_4.htm . My personal opinion is that the equations of motion SUVAT is poor value for education rather than the use of subscripts Podcast...more41minPlay

June 14, 2018New Scientist on BeesI was troubled by the Bee Movie, and this also troubles me.... Bees having emotions, It is not the bees I am worried about. I am moving to a new form of Podcasting where I do the science after the story, but I am not there yet. Podcast...more11minPlay
June 14, 2018NSW Physics Syllabus pages 1 -7Really for Australian ears only. I am grinding through the syllabus as I may have to teach it on return. The history of it and the ideas flowing into it is quite interesting (to me). It does sound odd if you read it all aloud. Podcast...more12minPlay

June 14, 2018NSW Physics Syllabus pages 20 - 31More syllabus - for Australian ears only. Reading aloud really shows the repeated information, which I suppose is necessary if people are just ... no I don't fully understand just now. Lots of birds and wind in the background. Podcast...more24minPlay
June 14, 2018NSW Physics Syllabus pages 32 - 39 Year 11 contentFinally this is the content taught on the year before the final year "Year 11". I just think suvat is not the best as it misses the opportunity to teach subscripts and subsubscripts and more, and also uses up cognitive load in rote learning rather than functional recall. The use of a vector equation for friction is a problem but many sources on the internet muck up this fundamental thing. This is acceptable as the symbols are placed as vector labels, N is a reserved symbol for normal force. Some problems here though, with the scale and positioning of the vectors. Obviously mg sin(theta) should be smaller than mg, but also the negative value is problematic when combined with the sense of the vector. In a body diagram all vectors act from the COM which is the centre of rotation. You are allowed to translate the vectors for clarity of the diagram but you should use a dashed extension line through the COM. As drawn this shows a anticlockwise torque. Also strictly speaking you should not use redundant or non real forces on the body diagram. Using Australian convention only there should be a <==== double resultant vector where the mgsin(theta) on is drawn labeled mg sin (theta) - mu N. All seems small change really, but... it is the clarity necessary for learning. Podcast...more17minPlay
June 14, 2018Triggering Memories with an Optical fibre set in your brain#CosmosMagazine article about hijacking brain cells with a virus, that then trigger light sensitive genes to pump out activation hormones so you can trigger memories with an optical fibre. June 14, 2018ACDC band to teach brain cell typesI just started to Podcast about brain cells and it naturally came out that we focus on neurons much as we focus on the band members at a gig. I used ACDC, but I also used teaching with your hand to explore the Podcast media. It could be fun to listen to. Podcast...more23minPlay
