In Chapter 8 of At The Mountains of Madness, Dyer and Danforth explore the ancient alien city and find huge murals that reveal the whole history of the Old Ones: they came from space, built a massive civilization, created the shoggoths as slaves, and eventually got wrecked by shoggoth rebellions and changing Earth conditions. The chapter shifts from scientific curiosity to deep cosmic dread as the explorers realize how tiny humanity is compared to this ancient power — and that something in the city might still be alive.
