  • Ep 43 - Edwin Raymond - Social Justice Wednesday
Edwin Raymond is a child of Haitian immigrants, born, raised, and currently still residing in the
East Flatbush section of Brooklyn. He joined the New York City Police Department in 2008 to
work from the inside to remedy some of the injustices he faced as a young man. Raymond is
currently serving as an active NYPD Lieutenant and is running for New York City Council
District 40 for teachers that need more resources, for hospitals that need more funding, and for
communities that need more opportunities, not over-policing. Raymond is dedicated to
addressing issues of over-policing, improving schools, increasing affordable housing, supporting
small businesses, and making quality healthcare accessible. As an NYPD officer, he knows what
needs to change so that our police force is accountable to all New Yorkers and that starts with
increased oversight from the City Council.
Dedicating his early life to activism, in 2014, he, along with his childhood friend, co-founded
PLOT (Preparing Leader of Tomorrow) which serves vulnerable youth by offering them
mentors, resources, and support. A year later, he became an advocate for “Raise the Age,” an
initiative that reformed the practice of automatically charging teenagers as adults no matter how
minor the offense they committed. Raymond has always sought out ways to advocate and
strengthen the communities that he has been a part of and he seeks to continue that work in the
    40th District.
Raymond is also a subject of the Emmy award-winning Hulu original documentary Crime +
Punishment that chronicled Raymond along with 11 NYPD officers, who blew the whistle on
arrest quotas and racism within the NYPD. Raymond is no stranger to speaking truth to power
and is determined to be a voice for the people of Council District 40.

  • Ep 40 - Inauguration of President Joe Biden & Madame Vice President Kamala Harris - Empowerment Wednesday
The Hill We Climb - Amanda Gorman
When day comes we ask ourselves where can we find light in this never-ending shade? The loss we carry asea we must wade. We’ve braved the belly of the beast. We’ve learned that quiet isn’t always peace. In the norms and notions of what just is isn’t always justice. And yet, the dawn is ours before we knew it. Somehow we do it. Somehow we’ve weathered and witnessed a nation that isn’t broken, but simply unfinished. We, the successors of a country and a time where a skinny black girl descended from slaves and raised by a single mother can dream of becoming president only to find herself reciting for one.
And yes, we are far from polished, far from pristine, but that doesn’t mean we are striving to form a union that is perfect. We are striving to forge our union with purpose. To compose a country committed to all cultures, colors, characters, and conditions of man. And so we lift our gazes not to what stands between us, but what stands before us. We close the divide because we know to put our future first, we must first put our differences aside. We lay down our arms so we can reach out our arms to one another. We seek harm to none and harmony for all. Let the globe, if nothing else, say this is true. That even as we grieved, we grew. That even as we hurt, we hoped. That even as we tired, we tried that will forever be tied together victorious. Not because we will never again know defeat, but because we will never again sow division.
Scripture tells us to envision that everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree and no one shall make them afraid. If we’re to live up to her own time, then victory won’t lie in the blade, but in all the bridges we’ve made. That is the promise to glade, the hill we climb if only we dare. It’s because being American is more than a pride we inherit. It’s the past we step into and how we repair it. We’ve seen a forest that would shatter our nation rather than share it. Would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy. This effort very nearly succeeded.
But while democracy can be periodically delayed, it can never be permanently defeated. In this truth, in this faith we trust for while we have our eyes on the future, history has its eyes on us. This is the era of just redemption. We feared it at its inception. We did not feel prepared to be the heirs of such a terrifying hour, but within it, we found the power to author a new chapter, to offer hope and laughter to ourselves so while once we asked, how could we possibly prevail over catastrophe? Now we assert, how could catastrophe possibly prevail over us?
We will not march back to what was, but move to what shall be a country that is bruised, but whole, benevolent, but bold, fierce, and free. We will not be turned around or interrupted by intimidation because we know our inaction and inertia will be the inheritance of the next generation. Our blunders become their burdens. But one thing is certain, if we merge mercy with might and might with right, then love becomes our legacy and change our children’s birthright.
So let us leave behind a country better than one we were left with. Every breath from my bronze-pounded chest we will raise this wounded world into a wondrous one. We will rise from the gold-limbed hills of the West. We will rise from the wind-swept Northeast where our forefathers first realized revolution. We will rise from the Lake Rim cities of the Midwestern states. We will rise from the sun-baked South. We will rebuild, reconcile and recover in every known nook of our nation, in every corner called our country our people diverse and beautiful will emerge battered and beautiful. When day comes, we step out of the shade aflame and unafraid. The new dawn blooms as we free it. For there is always light. If only we’re brave enough to see it. If only we’re brave enough to be it.

  • Ep 39 - Trump Impeached...AGAIN! - Social Justice Wednesday
    What is impeachment?
Impeachment is a grave and historically rare declaration by the House of Representatives accusing a federal official, like the President of the United States, of treason, bribery, or other high crimes or misdemeanors. Impeachment is the first step toward potentially removing the federal official from office, triggering a trial in the Senate to decide.
The House of Representatives has impeached three presidents: President Andrew Johnson in 1868, President Bill Clinton in 1998, and President Donald Trump in 2019. No president has ever been impeached twice or convicted and removed from office due to impeachment.
What does the process look like?
House vote: A simple majority in the House is required to impeach the president. If the vote fails, the president is not impeached and the process ends there.
Senate trial: After the House votes to impeach, the Senate would then hold a trial to determine whether to convict the president of impeachment.
Senate vote: A conviction requires a two-thirds supermajority of senators. If the vote falls short, the president is not convicted and the process ends there. If two-thirds of senators do agree to convict, the president is removed from office and the vice president becomes president.
    What’s at stake?
If the president is convicted by the Senate, he would lose the benefits associated with the post-presidency, such as a pension, security detail, and travel allowance. He could also lose the ability to run for president again.
Will this delay President-elect Biden’s inauguration?
No. As mandated in the U.S. Constitution, President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris will be sworn into office on January 20, 2021, at noon at the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.

2020 will come to an end in just over 3 weeks! Let's take a look back on some of the battles we fought this year and make a plan to take it to the next level in 2021.

There are so many names that we came to know:  Ahmaud Arbery, Breonnna Taylor, George Floyd, Elijah McClain, Rayshard Brooks -  the lives that were taken by police and white supremist.

We got to see our grassroot activists rise up in a new way: Shaun King, Tamika Mallory, Linda Sarsour, Dr. Melina Abullah, Kendrick, Sampson, Gary Chambers.

The pandemic highlighted the disadvantages in medical, in education, in lack of food for black and brown people.

We Can All Do Something to be a part of the momentum of change that started in 2020 and take it into 2021.
