In my new "Let's Talk About It" series, we are taking a look at male privilege.
In future, upcoming episodes we will be deep diving into straight and white privilege (stay tuned).
These topics are complicated and emotionally charged, so I invite you to breathe, meditate & educate yourself on the basics before proceeding.
Gender and sex can be related for some. The expectation that if you’re assigned male at birth, you’re a man, and that if you’re assigned female at birth, you’re a woman, lines up for people who are cisgender. Although a majority of people in our society do identify as men or women, there’s a wide range of possibilities between and beyond the two. Some people identify as nonbinary, an umbrella term for people whose gender identities don’t align with the man-woman binary.
For starters, here are some terms I use throughout this podcast...
privilege: a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group.
intersectionality: the interconnected nature of social categorizations such as race, class, and gender as they apply to a given individual or group, regarded as creating overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage.
social justice: the view that everyone deserves equal economic, political and social rights and opportunities.
gender: the socially constructed roles, behaviors, expressions and identities of girls, women, boys, men, and gender diverse people. It influences how people perceive themselves and each other, how they act and interact, and the distribution of power and resources in society.
binary: relating to, composed of, or involving two things.
oppression: the state of being subject to unjust treatment or control.
