Photographer. Bike Mechanic. Real Estate Agent. Scuba Instructor? Aaron Anderson has lived ten lives not stumbling into photography until he had chased a few other rabbits in his life. The one thing that hit me the hardest in this episode though was his intentionality. Over the last three years Aaron and his wife Joy have sold almost everything they owned, including their home and moved into an RV with their 3 kids to simply invest in time and experiences together as a family. Initially I asked Aaron to be on the show because of his keen sense of light and his remarkably creative eye but what come to the surface in this chat with him was how important the elements of his life that inform that creativity are to him. Aaron is a commercial freelance photographer currently living in an RV park outside of the Dallas, Texas area - but that's just been for the last few weeks or so. Before that it was in LA, and who knows before that. His family's deep desire to pursue experiences together and share in those experiences has clearly permeated into his work.

As a commercial shooter Aaron's photography is at the top of the industry. With a refined eye for retouching and finished product and a rolodex of big name clients and olympic athletes along side a formal sponsorship by Fujifilm this this an artist who has earned a little bit of ego and yet you'll hear in this episode he has absolutely none. Quick to defer success to the teams of people around him. Quick to see his role on set as a person who has the opportunity to show respect and love and appreciation to everybody else who is helping him do his job well. Quick to get home in time to tuck his kids in bed. Aaron jumped in this one interview from one of my personal favorite photographers to a man, a dad, and a husband I really look up to.

She directed, shot, and edited a feature length documentary in 9 countries, in 9 languages all about coffee. If I don't have you hooked there I don't know what will. Today's guest is Brooke Bierhaus. She's done documentary film and photo work in 18 countries with an extreme and somehow gentle passion towards telling the stories of the humans in the places she travels. She's bold, assertive, strong, and somehow filled with so much grace and compassion for the world around her. This is a story filled with courage. From war torn countries to small mid western towns in the US Brooke's story is filled with nuggets of home and kindness and throughout the last year of getting to know her I will say that her passion for story comes only second to her love of relationship.

This is a special episode. Not only is Brooke a friend right here in my home town of Bentonville, Arkansas, she was also a client of mine on the other end of my camera at her wedding earlier this year. Getting to know her, drink coffee and eat the most delicious coffee cake at her home, hang out with her husband, and now offer a platform to help tell her story has been an absolute honor.

Are you spending more of your life running towards something or away from something? Most of us are doing one or the other. For the vast majority of the world, perhaps especially the photography and creative industry at large the idea of the hustle, the grind, the no days off mindset takes us on a constant rollercoaster of brief moments of inspiration and near total burn out. Creative fatigue lurks behind every corner because we confuse two key things. Busyness and productivity. Today's episode is all about breaking down the fallacy of the hustle. Listen, after 15 years running a successful photography business I can certainly say I've spent more weeks working over 50 hours than I have under but what I've learned is this : I waste as much time as I spend and I can't get any of it back. The reason so many creatives lose their passion, their focus, and their relevance isn't creative evaporation, it's constant fatigue and you know what we need? A break. The grace to step away from the camera, our inboxes, social media, networking events, education and plug into our families and friends. The intentionality to dive head first into a life lived with purpose and careers spent fulfilling a passion that reflects that purpose rather than just perpetual busyness. The scarcity is in your head. The fear is holding you back. The answer may not be more work but more intentional play.

If you're a photographer in 2022 you're likely living a bit of a double life. The one on social media where you're a refined playful sudo-influencer with a cool big brimmed hat and the cutest latte's and then the one where you've got stacks of past due bills and tax statements you don't quite understand along side memory cards you think are backed up on your desk at home. Sound familiar? Ok, maybe I'm exaggerating both ends a bit but you get the idea. In this day and age being an active photographer for some reasons makes us want to hide the mistakes that make us the most human and yet, if you'll listen to this story you might just hear about a mistake that I made recently and how it actually brought me closer to the people on the other end of my camera.  Being a wedding photographer or portrait photographer doesn't have to mean we live perfect lives, nor does it mean that our goal for our work should be perfection. I'm Miles Witt Boyer, I'm just a normal dad and husband living in middle America. I get to go to a few really cool places with a few really awesome people and in the middle of all of that stuff, I also make mistakes, get tired, eat chips and queso instead of chicken and asparagus, and forget to call my friends back.
