In a couple recent photo shoots I’ve found myself using a reading lamp as my key light source. It’s funny how, after spending thousands of dollars on “professional” lighting, I find myself preferring to use just common household lamps, reading lamps, that kind of thing. Also, I want to revisit the importance of studying the work of others; particularly the people who really inspire and motivate you. It’s powerful education and food for your photography and creativity.

I love how often, the things you’re really passionate about in life can keep you engaged by bringing you through different phases, different stages. Photography is very much that way for me, and I’m just at the beginning of the next phase. Also have a short road trip coming up this weekend. I’m really looking forward to taking a few cameras, rolling enough film for the trip and enjoying the time on the road… and hopefully getting a few cool shots along the way.

I love the dark shadows that take away so much of the distractions, letting the light more strongly feature the main elements of the scene. After my initial experience with Rollei Retro 400s, I was cautiously already in love with this film. Is it as versatile as the film I’ve been shooting lately, Kodak Tri-X? No, but like Acros, there’s a very unique beauty and mood to the look of this film. I decided to shoot a few more rolls in different conditions to see if it would consistently perform well. I’ll share my thoughts about the film after shooting more of it, and talk about a few other things.

Remember last year when we found out Fujifilm was going to discontinue ACROS in the 35mm and 120 format this year, and I started testing different types of film to replace ACROS, the film that I had shot pretty much exlusively for the past couple of years? During that time I had purchased a couple rolls of Rollei Retro 400s, but before I had a chance to shoot it I had kind of fallen in love with Tri-X. Well this past week, wanting to do something different, I decided to go ahead and try out the Rollei and in this episode I want to share my initial thoughts and some sample images.
