Welcome to the first episode of season three! What better way to set it off than to have a the amazing Kathy come back to share some stories?!

In this episode of season three, Kathy and I go over our shared history. We take a look how we've been brought up in the San Diego Fil-Am community, and how the moves we've made got us to where we are today. We come from a long lineage of people from the community, and we felt it was about time to go over that legacy. 

Thanks again to Kathy for being the first person to start this train of history in the diaspora.

What's up y'all?! We're officially back with season three of the Pilipinx-American Stories Podcast. For those that are just tuning in to this podcast, here's a little blurb about what it's about:

We are here to better understand the different aspects of the Pilipinx-American diaspora. We cover topics such as, but are not limited to, history, community, and Pilipinx-American culture. And this podcast is hosted by none other than Alfredo Leano.

For 2021, we will be concentrating history of the Pilipinx-American diaspora. When I think history, I think about where the points connect from person to person, and that's essentially the goal of these conversations. How do the people in this cast connect to one another? And how does one connection lead to the next?

Instead of a regular season with 10 episodes, we'll be doubling the number, totaling 20 episodes for this season. The episodes you'll be getting for the first ten weeks is part one. There will be little break in between, then you'll get the next set of episodes in part two. 

I can't emphasize enough how big this project is. What's wild is the fact that this season is only a stepping stone for the rabbit hole that is history. While this season may not be able to cover everything, please allow this to be the first part of that journey.

The final episode in this series will be covering the attack on the Filipina auntie that took place in New York City, back in March. 

65-year old Filipina, Vilma Kari, was attacked in NYC's Time Square back in March by a man named Brandon Elliot. As Elliot attacked, he proceeded to yell racial slurs to Kari.  Since then, Elliot has been arrested, and Kari has been discharged from the hospital.  Despite the arrest of Elliot, many people are still outraged by the attack on another Asian-American elder. Many have also criticized the security guards that stood by as the attack happened.

What's up y'all! After two months, it felt like it was time to talk about this case. For episode five of the APAHM, we'll be covering the Atlanta spa shootings and some the updates that have been in the news.

A man by the name of Robert Aaron Long shot up three Asian-owned spas in Atlanta on March 16, 2021. Eight people were murdered, and six of those victims were of Asian descent.  Communities called this murder out as a hate crime, but many people outside of APIs claim otherwise. People including Captain Jay Baker, of Cherokee County Police Department, considered this crime nothing more than a "bad day."

Welcome to episode four of the APAHM series. In today's episode, we will be covering this case in the true crime fashion. 

Vincent Chin was a Chinese-American man that was murdered, in cold blood, by Ronald Ebens and Michael Nitz. Chin was "mistaken" as Japanese by both Ebens and Nitz. The two blamed Chin and the rest of the Japanese for having their jobs taken away. During the first trial, Ebens and Nitz were only charged with probation and a small fine. It wasn't until this case blew that the country demanded justice for Chin.

Welcome back, this is episode three of the APAHM series. Today's episode will cover the Watsonville riots of 1930. 

The Watsonville riots were acts of racial violence toward Filipino farmworkers over the course of 5 days from January 19, 1930 to January 23, 1930. This riot resulted in the death of  Fermin Tobera. It wasn't until 2011 when the State of California apologized for these acts. And it wasn't until 2020 that the City of Watsonville issued a formal apology. Let's take a look at some of the reasons why this event happened, and the aftermath.

Welcome back everyone! This is the second episode to the Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month series. Today we'll be focusing on the model minority myth and its unfortunate effects. 

The model minority is a myth that views APIs in a "do-gooder" monolith, ultimately erasing diversity and struggles in API communities. It may be viewed as compliment to others, but is ultimately a problem to all. In this episode, we'll be focusing on what it is and the communities it harms.

Welcome everyone! This is the first episode for the Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month series for the month of May. In this series, I'll be discussing my thoughts and feelings on AAPI hate, as well as highlighting points of AAPI history that don't typically get highlighted enough in U.S. history textbooks.

For this first episode, I'll be going over my general feelings on the recent incidences of AAPI hate and how these same incidences aren't new to this country. I also give a little preview of what's to come for the rest of the month.

Happy 2021, friends! It's been a long break since the last episode, and I'm happy to be back! The episode is one of the first off-shoot episodes for this podcast, meaning that it isn't tied to a specific theme or season. I wanted to do this in order to give more flexibility for conversations, especially when events or moments come up throughout the year. 

For this first episode, I'd like to introduce my good friend and organizational partner, Christian Toledo. For those that don't know, Christian and I are part Pilipino-American Unity for Progress, also known as UniPro. I'm part of the San Diego chapter and Christian is a member of the Texas chapter. I brought Christian on to talk about Lumikha, which is UniPro Texas's annual art showcase. This is a program that revolves around highlighting the artists in their community, and allowing them space to tell their stories. As artistic director for this year's event, Christian is hear to tell us more about it.

Happy December, everyone! I super excited to present our finale episode for season 2. First things first, the journey season 2 has been amazing. There were so many great conversations, which I've personally taken to heart in my own life practices. I hope y'all got the same feeling. 

For the finale episode, we have Chicago-based artist, Jon Taala. Jon practices in the art of photography specifically the medium of film. I've known Jon for over a year now, and this was the first time we really got down with a photography-based conversation.
