In this episode Bob and I talk about yet another great lager style beer. This week it is the American/International Amber lager. A widely available, sessionable craft beer style that showcases both malt and hops. Amber lagers are a medium-bodied lager with a toasty or caramel-like malt character. Hop bitterness can range from very low to medium-high. Brewers may use decoction mash and dry-hopping to achieve advanced flavors.
Style examples:
Examples of this style:
1. Rhinegeist Brewery – Antelope
2. Dos Equis – Amber
3. Terrestrial Brewing - Erie Dusk
ABV: 4.5-6.0%
IBUs: 8-25
Color: 6-14
Serving Temp: For darker lagers, like Vienna-style, Oktoberfest or Marzen-style lagers, and amber lagers, you'll want to go slightly warmer, in the 45 to 50 range. Stronger lagers, like a dunkel or doppelbock, would do well at 50.
Serving Pressure: 10-14 PSI
Drink representative selection of the week: GLBC Eliot Ness Amber Lager 6.1% and 27 IBU.
Beer as described by brewer: Admittedly, it's a bit of a paradox to name our Amber Lager for history's most famous agent of prohibition. But it's a smooth, malty (and dare we say, arresting?) paradox.

This week I traveled out to Grafton, Ohio and visited Franklin Brewing Company. My guest was Aaron Schickel who is the owner/brewer at FBC. Aaron has been operating Franklin Brewing Company for 10 years and recently they have relocated from the residential garage where it all began to a new location on Main St. in the village of Grafton. We talked about why it took 8 years before he finally decided to make the move and how difficult the entire process was once a new location was chosen, and despite what you may think, the issue was not entirely related to state licensing. Despite having the new location open for just one month Aaron is brewing some very solid beer, which I of course sampled. During the interview we drank:
· Anthony's Afterwit – Wheat beer 5.75%
· Ben's Brown – Brown Ale 5.4%
· America's Gold – Kolsch 4.6%
· 1724 English Ale – ESB 6%

In this episode Bob and I continue with lager month as we breakdown American Lagers. The American lager has little in the way of hop and malt character. A straw to gold, very clean and crisp, highly carbonated lager. Next to American Light lager this might be the second most popular beer style in the U.S.
Style examples:
1. AB/InBev – Budweiser
2. Founders – Solid Gold
3. El Segundo Brewing Company – Broken Skull
ABV: 4.2-5.3%
IBUs: 8-18
Color: 2-3.5
Serving Temp: Go cold — anywhere in the 33- to 40-degree range is suitable for macro lagers. This is around your average refrigerator temperature, with 33 degrees, near freezing, on the low end. Your sweet spot is really between 36 and 38 degrees, which is the temperature of most draft beer systems.
Serving Pressure: 10-14 PSI
Drink representative selection of the week: Drink representative selection of the week: Royal Docks Brewing Company – Backyard Crusher 5.1% and 18 IBUs
Beer as described by brewer: At Royal Docks, we simply adore intellectually challenging brews that beckon one to explore their depths and parse each nuanced sip, but this ain't one of those beers. See, there's thinkin' beer and there's drinkin' beer - and Backyard Crusher is a drinkin' beer. Sure, we could tell you all about the Egyptian black lime, Mediterranean Sea-salt and Citra hops that make this tangy golden quencher so easy on the tongue, but that would defeat the purpose

This week I sat down with Tom Gray from Rocky River Brewing Company. Tom has a quite the brewing history, and he shared stories of his past adventures that included some stops at some amazing breweries along the way. Rocky River Brewing has been around since 1998 and during that time they have only had three brewers. We drank some fantastic beer during the visit, and the plan was to eat some of the great food at RRBC, but the weather had something else to say about that. Halfway through the interview a windstorm knocked out power at the brewery, which dashed my lunch plans. Thankfully my computer powered my soundboard, and we were able to finish the interview.
During the interview we drank some fantastic beers including:
· Pirate Light– Kolsch 5.2%
· Hazy Bones – NEIPA: 8%
· Subchaser – Hefeweizen 4.3%
· Strangeways – IPA 6.0%

In April Bob and I start dissecting some of our favorite styles, lagers. In this episode we dive into the American Light Lager. A beer style that is perfect for cutting the grass, deck sitting, or watching any sporting event, the American light lager is pale, bright, effervescent, and just down right tasty. Sit back, crack a cold one, and listen as we pontificate on perhaps the most popular style of beer in all American folklore.
Style examples:
1. Yuengling – Light Lager
2. Boston Beer Company – Sam '76
3. Great Lakes Brewing Company – Rally Drum Lager
ABV: 2.8-4.2%
IBUs: 8-12
Color: 2-3
Serving Temp: Go cold — anywhere in the 33- to 40-degree range is suitable for macro lagers. This is around your average refrigerator temperature, with 33 degrees, near freezing, on the low end. Your sweet spot is really between 36 and 38 degrees, which is the temperature of most draft beer systems.
Serving Pressure: 10-14 PSI
Drink representative selection of the week: Brew Kettle – Major Lager 4.5% and 10 IBU
Beer as described by brewer: A traditional Light American Lager with a crisp taste, a slight bite of American hops, a clean & refreshing finish. The perfect game day beer
Average Rating on Untappd: 3.53

This week I travel to Fat Head's Brewery in Middleburg Heights, Ohio and sit down with owner Matt Cole. Matt has been in the industry for over 30 years and along the way he has obtain an immense amount of knowledge. This knowledge has helped him grow Fat Head's brewery into one of the most successful beer brands in the U.S. Over the past 14 years Fat Heads has grown from the original location in Pittsburgh to 4 locations including 3 in Ohio. Each location offers flagship beers, but they also carry beers that are specific to that location. There is a lot of knowledge to be gained from this episode as Matt and I had a really great conversation about hops. We discussed hop selection, the process of dry hopping, and whirlpool hopping. We also talk about the role technology has played in helping to improve the brewing industry. We also drank some great beer during the interview including:
· Goggle Fogger – Hefeweizen 5.4%
· Green Grunge – IPA 8.8%
· Head Hunter – IPA 7.5%
· Head Shrinker – IPA 8%

In this episode Bob and I continue with our month of English beers. This week we decide to take on the ESB. ESB (Extra Special Bitter) ESB stands for "extra special bitter." This style is known for its balance and the interplay between malt and hop bitterness. English pale ales display earthy, herbal English-variety hop character. Medium to high hop bitterness, flavor and aroma should be evident. The yeast strains used in these beers lend a fruitiness to their aromatics and flavor, referred to as esters. The residual malt and defining sweetness of this richly flavored and medium bodied.
Style examples:
1. Heavy Seas – Winter Storm
2. Fuller's – ESB
3. Driftwood Brewery – Naughty Hildegard ESB
· ABV: 4.6%-6.2%
· IBUs: 30-50
· Color: 8-18
Our sample beer for the week: Wrecking Crew Brew Works – Cricket Stomper ESB – 6.5% 46 IBU

This week I sat down with the voice of Cincy Beer, The Gnarly Gnome and we talked about a number of topics. The Gnome gave us a taste of what is happening in Cincinnati craft beer including the recent Bockfest, the 50 West expansion, and the sale of Listermann Brewing Company. We also talked about craft beer expansion in Ohio, the rising prices being seen at the tap, and what is necessary for breweries to avoid a collapse. At the end of the show I introduced a new segment called The Six pack of info where we get to know our guest from a non-beer centric perspective. During the interview we drank some fantastic beers including:
· West Side Brewing– DIPA 9.3%
· Listermann Brewing – Dry Irish Stout: 4.7%
· Alematic Artisan Ales and Esoteric Brewing Co. – All Black Everything Breakfast Stout 7.9%
· Urban Artifact – Beipiasaurus 7.8%

We continue with our month of English/UK beers. This week we dive into the English Brown Ale. A bona fide English beer classic, English-style brown ale is easily one of the most iconic beer styles. Toasty, robust and with a bit of chocolate maltiness, the English brown ale is a meal in a glass, but offers unlimited opportunities for memorable food pairings. Neither flashy nor boring, the English brown is a beer with enough variation to keep devotees ordering them time and time again.
Style examples:
1. Alesmith - Nut Brown
2. Cigar City – Maduro Brown
3. Newcastle – Brown Ale
ABV: 4.2 – 5.9%
IBUs: 20-30
Color: 12-2
Our sample beer for the week: MacNutty Macadamia Nut Brown Ale – 5.5% N/A IBU
Beer as described by brewer: Things were getting a bit squirrely over here; it must be the trays upon trays of macadamia nuts we hand-roasted for this beer. Some would say we've gone nuts – but taking our time over each and every step is part of what makes every one of our craft brews unique. We love a good brown ale, and we're certain you'll love this one too, from the rich nutty flavor, to the luxurious dark brown color. Brewed with real macadamia nuts toasted in our own kitchen along with top quality malts and hops, we hope you'll join us in raising a glass. Craft brewed in our independent brewery in Sligo

This week I travel to North Canton, Ohio and I visit Mike Leckie-Ewing who is the owner of New Berlin Brewing Company. New Berlin is a new brewery that has been opened for a little over 5 months, but they are already putting out some killer liquid. Mike talks about growing up and the passion he always had for food, and how he always wanted to open a restaurant. As he grew up he developed a love for craft beer, and in 2020 he began home brewing. Eventually he and his wife decided to open the brewery that is now located in North Canton, a little over 50 miles south of Cleveland. During the interview we drank some fantastic beers including:
· Damn the Kaiser – American IPA: 6.8%
· New Berliner Weisse – Berliner Weisse: 4.4%
· Northern Section – Irish Milk Chocolate Stout 6.4%
· Interurban Railroad – Coffee Porter 6.3%
