This week Bob and I continue our journey through the UK as we make our way to a Scottish Beer that can sometimes present itself as a bit boozy. In this episode we discuss Scottish Wee Heavy. This is a beer that brings a lot of breadiness and toast like qualities along with a bit of caramel/toffee. If you're into a maltier beer that often packs quite a punch then the Scottish Wee Heavy might be exactly what you need.
Style examples:
1. Orkney Skull Splitter
2. Thirsty Dog Wulver
3. The Duck Rabbit Wee Heavy Scotch-Style Ale
· ABV: 6.5-10%
· IBUs: 17-35
· Color: 14-25
Our sample beer for the week: Founders Dirty Bastard 8.5% and 50IBU
Beer as described by brewer: So good it's almost wrong. Dark ruby in color and brewed with seven varieties of imported malts. Complex in finish, with hints of smoke and peat, paired with a malty richness and a right hook of hop power to give it the bad attitude that a beer named Dirty Bastard has to live up to. Ain't for the wee lads.

This week as Bob and I continue our month of beers from the UK we take on the most famous category, well at least on St. Patrick's Day, the Dry Irish Stout. A beer that is often misunderstood and completely miscategorized by the novice beer drinker. Contrary to many people's beliefs this beer is not thick, chewy, and sweet. Instead the dry Irish stout presents a light to medium body and finishes very dry. So, grab a beer, sit back and enjoy our Hijinx as we unravel the amazing Dry Irish Stout.
Style examples:
1. Murphy's Irish Stout
2. North Coast Brewing Old #38 Stout
3. Pizza Port Seaside Stout
· ABV: 3.8-5.0%
· IBUs: 25-45
· Color: 25-40
Our sample beer for the week: Guinness Draught 4.2% 45 IBU
Beer as described by brewer: Swirling clouds tumble as the storm begins to calm. Settle. Breathe in the moment, then break through the smooth, light head to the bittersweet reward. Unmistakably GUINNESS, from the first velvet sip to the last, lingering drop. And every deep-dark satisfying mouthful in between. Pure beauty. Pure GUINNESS. Guinness Draught is sold in kegs, widget cans, and bottles. The ABV varies from 4.1 to 4.3%. Guinness Extra Cold is the exact same beer only served through a super cooler at 3.5 °C

This week I travel to Cleveland, Ohio and I visit with The Jolly Scholar Brewing Company. I sat down with Matt Vann, the owner of the Jolly Scholar and TJ Grane, the lead brewer. We discussed a variety of topics including what it's like to open a brewery on the campus of a university, as well as how they managed to maintain a thriving craft brewery while navigating extended shutdowns of both society and the campus on which they are housed. We also discuss expansions, other business ventures, and the craft beer bubble. During the show we sampled the following:
· Cold Beer Here – American Lager: 5.1%
· Henry's Law – Wheat IPA: 6%
· Dew of the Universe – Triple IPA 10%
· Academic Integrity – Session IPA 5%

As we move to the month of the Irish we might as well start reviewing some Irish beer styles. This week we discuss Irish Red Ales. This is a style that has a very distinctive malt flavor that showcases both notes of toffee and caramel. While the true Irish Red Ales are lower in alcohol, American versions often come in a t much higher payloads.
Style examples:
1. Guinness – Smithwick's Red Ale
2. Sam Adam's - Irish Red
3. Thirsty Dog – Irish Red Setter
· ABV: 3.8 – 5.0%
· IBUs: 18-28
· Color: 9-14
Our sample beer for the week: Great Lakes Brewing Company – Conway's Irish Ale 6.3% and 25 IBU.
Beer as described by brewer: A pint for Pa Conway! Our co-owners' grandfather and policeman who'd likely uphold that an Irish Ale with full-bodied caramel malt flavors is just the ticket.

This week I travel to Wadsworth Brewing Company in Wadsworth, Ohio. I sat down with Ernie Joy who is the co-owner and brewer at WBC. This is the second time WBC has been on Pint Talking, but it's the first time we were able to do the interview at the brewery as our first visit took place back during the miserable year that was 2020. In this interview we got caught up on everything going on at WBC. We discussed how the brewery has stayed the course over the past 6 years by continuing to grow their customer base while not expanding the brew house size. Ernie continues to make some really great beer and we sampled some while we talked.
· Golden Days – Czech Pilsner 5.9%
· On the Square – American Brown Ale 4.75%
· River Styx Monster – DIPA 9.4%
· Bad Motivator – Imperial Milk Stout 8.5%

In this episode we discuss American Imperial Stout
The snow storm rages on and Bob and I attempt to warm up with an Imperial Stout. This may be one of my top 3 styles. We take a deep dive into the booziness, mouthfeel, and roastiness that is often associated with this style of beer. While our sample beer is a little bit higher than the BJCP guidelines it certainly did the trick when it comes to warming the soul.
Style examples
Our sample beer for the week: : Hoppin Frog – Q.O.R.I.S the Quasher 15.7% ABV 0 IBU
Beer as described by brewer: This super-extreme Quadruple Oatmeal Russian-style Imperial Stout will tantalize, engulf, and quash your taste buds like no other! Q.O.R.I.S. is even more dark and hoppy than D.O.R.I.S. Double Stout, and stronger than T.O.R.I.S. Triple Stout. Dry-hopped and first-wort-hopped with aromatic American hops to create one great and memorable Imperial Stout!

This week I travel to Broadview Brewing Company in Broadview Heights, Ohio. I sat down with Terry Delap and Wyatt Routson to discuss everything going on at Broadview Brewing Company. We talked about the importance of having good beer, solid food, and the incorporation of weekly entertainment as being the building blocks to their early success. After being open a little over a year and being Broadview Heights first brewery to open the team at Broadview Brewing Company has developed a devoted following. One of the main reasons is echoed from every customer, Broadview Brewing always delivers a superb customer experience. During the show we sampled the following:

This week I travel to Noble Creatures Cask House in Youngstown, Ohio to talk to co-owner and head brewer Ira Gerhart. This was a fantastic visit and my first to Youngstown. We kicked things off a bit differently as I shared my pressure fermented pilsner with Ira for some feedback. After that we got into some great beer discussion about open and spontaneous fermentation as well as barrel aging and Solara projects. We discussed the 100-year-old church that the brewery is located in, and how receptive their customers have been to some of the funkier styles of beers they are doing at Noble Creatures. During the show we drank the following beers:
