Pipestone resident Mark Evans shows off the big fish he reeled in during a fishing trip to Lake Winnipeg the Canadian province of Manitoba. Evans on Thursday, March 5, caught this massive northern pike. The fish weighed 25 pounds, and is roughly 45 inches long. Evans used what’s called a Rapala Rattlin’ Rap lure to snag the pike. AUSTIN — The Pipestone Area Schools’ softball team will begin the season with scrimmages on Saturday, March 21. Scrimmages will be conducted at the Wescott Sports Complex, an indoor facility. Varsity will play Lakeview at 11 a.m., followed by LeSueur-Henderson at 12:15 p.m. Junior varsity is set for Coon Rapids JV at 1:30 p.m., with Worthington JV to follow at 2:45 p.m. This marks the third straight year the Arrows have participated in this event. MARSHALL — For one half, the Southwest Minnesota Christian boys basketball team stayed stride for stride with Hills-Beaver Creek. The Patriots were ahead 37-33 at intermission. Four Pipestone Area Schools’ wrestlers were named to the All-Big South Conference team. The four are multi-time state champion Miklo Hernandez, state fourth-place finisher Mason Fruechte, 121-pounder Lane Fruechte and Joannacrystal Perez-Garcia (who competes in the girls’ 100-pound class). The Pipestone Area Schools’ girls basketball team celebrated a successful season with an awards program on Tuesday, March 3. “We fell short of what we wanted,” PAS head coach Grant Everson said as the Arrows lost during the Section 3AA South subsection semifinals to St. James Area, 72-56. Still, PAS showed massive improvement during the 2025-26 campaign with 23 wins — which is reportedly the second-best total in school history. BALTIC, S.D. — The Elkton-Lake Benton powerlifting squad participated in the South Dakota Powerlifting Association state meet on Saturday, March 7.
