JACKSON — The third installment of the Pipestone Area Schools-Jackson County Central boys basketball series proved to be its most competitive. Cassy Gonzales from Apple Valley recorded a 7-4 sudden victory over Rock in perhaps the most thrilling female title bout. Bernie Rock, also of Luverne, pinned Hutchinson’s Gabriella VonBerge for fifth place at 118 pounds. WORTHINGTON — The Minnesota West Community & Technical College women’s basketball team is back in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III tournament. To celebrate the occasion, there will be a tournament watch party in the Minnesota West Worthington campus commons at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 12. The commons is located at 1450 College Way in Worthington. The Bluejays, the top-seeded team in the tournament, will play Onondaga Community College at noon in Brownwood, Texas, in the quarterfinals. ST. PAUL — Rarefied air can be reached. Provided he is an elite, goal-setting athlete. And that’s certainly the case for Pipestone Area Schools’ sophomore wrestler Miklo Hernandez. On Saturday afternoon at Grand Casino Arena, Hernandez became only the third Arrow to claim three individual state championships. Hernandez recorded a 17-2 technical fall victory over Fosston-Bagley’s Ian Phrakonkham in the Class A 133-pound title bout. The match was stopped shortly before the end of the third period. Kevin Jennings is the newest member of the Jasper Fire Department. The Jasper City Council approved his membership to the department during its Feb. 10 meeting. Jennings is from Anchorage, Alaska and moved to Jasper last summer with his now wife, Renae (Thode), who is a Jasper native, and their children. Jennings has four children and Renae has two, and they range in age from 9 to 20. Jennings works in the city’s public works department and Renae is the Jasper city clerk/treasurer.
