TO THE EDITOR: I was raised in Pipestone, then moved to the Minneapolis area in the 1980’s. I currently reside there and return to Pipestone to visit family. While living in Minneapolis I have had the honor and privilege to get to know many immigrant families, both from living in my neighborhood and while working in the school district. I have heard many of their stories and admire all of them for their bravery in even coming to our country. They didn’t want to leave their countries and their extended families. They did so to make a better life for...

A while back I heard Pipestone Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Erica Volkir mention to the Pipestone City Council that 2026 was the city of Pipestone’s 150th anniversary. For those who like complicated words, that’s the sesquicentennial. That certainly seemed like a noteworthy milestone, so I cracked open the old Pipestone County History book to do some research. There I found that the village of Pipestone was incorporated on Feb. 10, 1881. That date also came up as I was looking through the Days Gone By section of old issues of the Pipestone County Star for our daily One...

TO THE EDITOR: As a downtown business owner in Pipestone, Minn., I support the concerns raised about paving CSAH 25. Main street businesses depend on people traveling through Pipestone. A paved road that could easily function as a bypass risks sending traffic around our town instead of into it. That is the last thing our small businesses need. Visitors often discover our shops, restaurants, and historic downtown simply because they pass through. When traffic disappears, so do opportunities for local businesses to grow and thrive. Before this project moves forward, there should be careful study of the potential economic impact...
