MARSHALL — The Pipestone Area Schools’ girls basketball team played one game during the holiday break. The Arrows made it count. And then some. Behind a 35-point night from Jadyn Kor and seven steals from Josie Danks, PAS downed MACCRAY 71-43 at Borch’s Holiday Classic on Monday, Dec. 29. “It was nice to play a game over the break,” PAS head coach Grant Everson said. “A holiday break like that is always nice to kind of reset, and get some rest.” Everson said the girls relished the opportunity to play at Southwest Minnesota State University’s R/A Facility. As for beating...

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Iowa Wild has signed former Luverne High School standout Jaxon Nelson. Iowa Wild general manager Matt Hendricks made the announcement official on Friday, Dec. 26. This is a two-way contract from the remainder of the 2025-26 season, Hendricks said. Iowa is an affiliate with the National Hockey League’s Minnesota Wild. Nelson, a forward, scored once and had an assist in seven games with the Iowa Wild while on a professional tryout contract (PTO). Before joining the Iowa Wild, Nelson played for the ECHL’s Iowa Heartland in Coralville, Iowa, where he racked up 17 points (on...

TYLER — Daynica Brown has been named the Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Association’s Class A coach of the year. Brown piloted Russell-Tyler-Ruthton to a second-place finish in Class A this year, falling to Mayer Lutheran in the championship (25-17, 25-15, 25-23). It was another banner year for the Knights, who compiled a 30-6 record with many victories versus schools from larger classes — and also Red Rock Conference regular-season champion. “It’s so very exciting,” Brown said in a text to the Pipestone County Star. “To be amongst all those other great coaches speaks volumes,” Brown added. This marks the second time...

MARSHALL — Minnewaska Area Schools’ end-to-end style proved too much for Pipestone Area during the Marshall Hoops Club holiday tournament Saturday, Dec. 27. Both Marc Gruber and Tristan O’Neil dropped in 17 points, and 10 different Lakers scored in a 71-38 conquest over PAS at Southwest Minnesota State University’s R/A Facility. “The biggest thing was they were able to get out in transition, and they made shots,” PAS head coach Michael Slaba noted. Slaba also noted the Arrows’ field goal percentage as another factor in the loss (13-of-54 from the floor, 24.1 percent). “They executed really well offensively against us,”...

In 2025, Pipestone Area Schools sophomore wrestler Miklo Hernandez became a nationally known commodity. Hernandez competed at the U.S. Marine Corps Junior Nationals in late July, claiming a national title in the 16-under, 126-pound bracket. What made this achievement even more impressive? There were more than 100 wrestlers in that bracket. “It means a lot (to be national champion),” Hernandez said in a telephone call with the Star that month. “It’s been something I’ve been dreaming about since I was little.” PAS head wrestling coach Paul Young complimented Hernandez. “Miklo has the mindset to set goals,” Young said. “He wants...

BENSON — Five Pipestone Area Schools’ wrestlers won weight classes at the Braves Classic on Saturday, Dec. 27. Perhaps the best “feel good” story of the day was Carloseriel Perez-Garcia, who recorded three pins and one technical fall en route to the 114-pound championship. “I’m very happy for Carlos,” PAS head coach Paul Young said. “He came into the season banged up, and last year was tough for him. But, now, he’s finally figured out his weight and he’s healthy. I’m proud of him.” Carloseriel finished a strong day pinning Wabasso’s Kullen Steen in 1:05, using an inside cradle to...

The Worthington High School gymnastics program is loaded with depth and has been a multi-time Section 3A champion. That said, Pipestone Area Schools’ junior Kaysa Douty and senior Vivian Brockberg were the top-two finishers in the all-around category during a Big South Conference meet on Tuesday, Dec. 23 at PAS Gymnasium. “Placing first and second against a team like Worthington is a huge nod to the well-round talent Kaysa and Vivian both have,” PAS head coach Stacie Wallace said. “We don’t have the same depth as Worthington to piece together different line-ups on different events.” Wallace said it has pushed...

ST. JAMES — The Pipestone Area Schools girls basketball team rolled into the Christmas break by beating St. James Area, 62-49. The Arrows improved to 8-1 before Monday’s Borch’s Holiday Classic game versus MACCRAY (Clara City). (Read a recap on that game in the Thursday, Jan. 8, edition of The Star.) PAS built a 32-23 halftime lead and built it into double digits during the second half. Jadyn Kor paced all scorers with 22 points, including three 3-pointers and a perfect 3-for-3 from the free-throw stripe. Taryn Tuinstra and Amyra Mahik added 15 and 10 points, respectively, for the Arrows....
