MARSHALL — For the first time ever, Marshall High School served as the host of the Big South Conference wrestling championship. Southwest Minnesota State University’s R/A Facility was the backdrop, with six mats placed on the floor — keeping the action moving. “To do this at SMSU in the R/A Facility was special,” Marshall head coach Ethan Hoppe said. “We knew it would make for a great atmosphere. We already have plans on what we could or would do differently if we are fortunate enough to host the tournament again.” Pipestone Area Schools’ head coach Paul Young concurred. “It’s a...

MARSHALL — The Minnesota State High School League Section 3A gymnastics meet is still roughly five weeks away. However for Pipestone Area Schools, there was no time like Saturday, Jan. 3 to get a taste of what a multi-team event will look like. And the Arrows handled this environment with aplomb — finishing second out of five schools with a team score of 127.875. PAS finished ahead of rival Luverne, who the Arrows will see again Thursday in a triangular also featuring Blue Earth Area. The meet will begin at 6 p.m. in the Classic Gymnasium. Aubrey Brockberg put together an all-around score of 30.425. However, the Buccaneers produced a heap of dynamic performances en route to a 138.675-127.975 victory. “Aubrey set a new high all-around score for herself,” PAS head coach Stacie Wallace noted. BELGRADE — Both Mason Fruechte and Lane Fruechte had plenty of success at the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Jaguar Invitational on Friday, Jan. 2. Junior Mason Fruechte had the opportunity to wrestle against University of Minnesota signee Titan Friederichs from Watertown Mayer-Mayer Lutheran in the 127-pound championship bout. “It was a great opportunity to face an opponent the caliber of that,” PAS head coach Paul Young said, “and see that level.” Friederichs earned a 20-5 technical fall over Fruechte, with the match stopped at the 2-minute, 54-second mark. Despite the outcome, Young said Fruechte wrestled tough. And he expects Mason to use this...
