  • FEATURE STORY: Dupont enjoying PAS return

This past Thursday, Sept. 3, new Pipestone Area Schools’ cheer coach Kaylee Dupont escorted her team onto the track at Paulsen Field.  Dupont replaces Mariah Swanson in the role. Swanson has moved to Rochester.  A 2024 PAS graduate, Dupont was both a cheerleader and color guard member while in high school — so the transition to coach was easy to figure out.  Dupont twice won the Mandy Gillin Award, presented to the top member of the PAS color guard. Gillin was a former color guard member who passed away about two decades ago.  Since there was no time to change...

  • HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS TENNIS: St. James Area sweeps PAS

The Minnesota State High School League defending Class A state champions visited Pipestone on Thursday, Sept. 3.  And the results pretty much went as expected.  St. James Area blanked PAS, 7-0, at Paulsen Athletic Complex-PAS Courts.  “It was good competition,” PAS head coach James Skyberg said, “and you want to see what you can get out of it.”  Getting to deuce points and forcing ad-scoring turned into Arrows’ highlights versus the Saints.  “It’s always been a solid program,” Skyberg said regarding St. James Area. “They play in a lot of summer tournaments. A lot of their girls concentrate on tennis.”...

  • HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Gutted by graduation

WINDOM — The Pipestone Area and Windom Area football teams squared off in the Section 3AA tournament last October 2025. The Eagles eventually nipped the Arrows, 38-36.  However, these days, both PAS and Windom share a painful truth — the Arrows and Eagles were both gutted by graduation. New talent is in development. There’s one thing already in the Arrows’ favor: season first downs.  In PAS’ loss to Redwood Valley on Thursday, Sept. 3, the team generated 10 first downs. Meanwhile, Martin County West’s stingy defense didn’t allow Windom a single first down in a whitewash.  Still, head coach Scott...

  • HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Lundeen, Cardinals break Arrows

Redwood Valley’s seasoned senior quarterback Zack Lundeen powered the Cardinals to 490 yards in total offense.  That told just part of the story as the Cardinals downed Pipestone Area Schools at Paulsen Field on Thursday, Sept. 3.  “They were bigger, faster and stronger than us,” PAS head coach Scott Boomgaarden said. “That was the difference.”  Redwood Valley’s blocking scheme won the edge all game long, and the Cardinals also had four critical conversions (on third and fourth down combined). Lundeen had just 11 pass attempts, rather letting his legs do the work — and RV racked up 41 carries overall. ...

  • HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: RTR blanks YME again

TYLER — For the second straight season, the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton football team opened by shutting out Yellow Medicine East. The Knights blanked the Sting, 34-0, as quarterback Brayden Chandler went 7-of-12 passing for 111 yards and two TD. Chandler also rushed 15 times for 107 yards and two more scores.  Micah Johnson also fared well for the Knights as the team’s leading rusher with 114 yards on 15 carries. Lane Wichmann added 95 receiving yards — which included both passing scores. The Knights held the Sting to less than 200 yards in total offense, preserving the shutout with a fourth-quarter stand. ...
