Welcome to Homecoming week, Pipestone Area Schools’ football fans.  In recent years, the Arrows have defeated Minnesota Valley Lutheran, Redwood Valley and Sibley East.  MVL comes calling again for the 2026 installment of HoCo, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18 at Paulsen Field. Even though the Arrows have had the upper hand in recent games versus the Chargers, MVL will still provide a challenge — especially since several PAS players are nursing unspecified injuries.  “It’s been competitive,” PAS head coach Scott Boomgaarden said. “They have good athletes and they are well-coached. WINDOM — PAS senior quarterback Zayne Zollner rushed for two TD, and the Arrow defense allowed minus-4 yards rushing in a 14-point victory over the Eagles at Island Park. “I thought we played well,” Boomgaarden said. “We executed, and gave up one play where we got beat. But, I’m very happy with the effort. EDGERTON — Edgerton Public School remained undefeated on the season with a 72-14 thrashing over Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther.  Tucker Arp opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 6-yard TD run with Kaisen Hendriks adding the two-point conversion.  There was a lightning delay with a little more than five minutes remaining in the first quarter, which lasted nearly one hour. TYLER — Sleepy Eye United played the role of spoiler on Friday, Sept. 11, beating Russell-Tyler-Ruthton 36-6 in the Knights’ Homecoming game.  Sleepy Eye didn’t allow a single RTR offensive TD, holding the Knights to 106 total yards. “They beat us up front on both sides of the ball,” RTR head coach Ted Kern said. “With the windy conditions, we knew it would be imperative to establish the run. Pipestone Area Schools’ student Keely Burke placed second in the local high school trap shooting league’s spring season. Burke, a junior, posted an average score of 20.1 per 25 shots. The Pipestone County 4-H Shooting Sports fall season is underway.  The team also competed at the Minnesota State Fair shooting contest recently.  Look for results from that event in a future edition of The Pipestone County Star.

The Elkton-Lake Benton competitive cheer squad participated at the Parkston Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 8. The Elks earned the championship with Winner second and Wagner third. Here’s the squad. WABASSO — Both Pipestone Area Schools and Southwest Minnesota Christian will participate in the 2026 Wabasso Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 19. Pool play matches will begin at 9 a.m. with Wabasso facing Montevideo and Redwood Valley squaring off with Renville County West.  PAS first match will take place at 10 a.m., and SWC will play Bird Island-Olivia-Lake Lillian (BOLD) at the same time. Pool play will continue through roughly 1 p.m.  Teams will play two sets to 25 points with a cap of 27, receiving one point for each set won and one point to the winner of each match....

Five-set matches can provide a learning experience.  That’s what Pipestone Area Schools volleyball certainly found out last week in losses to Big South Conference rival Luverne and in-county foe Southwest Minnesota Christian.  Luverne overcame a two-set deficit to beat PAS 18-25, 19-25, 25-21, 25-22, 18-16 on Tuesday, Sept. 8.  Two days later, SWC staved off the Arrows (25-13, 25-20, 19-25, 20-25, 15-10) in Edgerton.  “Things didn’t go our way,” PAS head coach Shelly Hennager said. “But, we played well both nights. Ewert Community Recreation Center staff would like to remind the public the facility has an indoor pool.  The center is located at 115 North Hiawatha Avenue in Pipestone.  The pool is open to both members and non-members.  Daily pool admission is for those ages seven years old on up. Senior citizens (those 62 years of age and older) and children six years old and under are charged .  A pool punch card is available for , which is for 10 visits.  Keep in mind, the pool is closed during aquanastics classes. Pipestone Country Club will be the site of a ‘big cup’ tournament on Saturday, Sept. 26.  Golf begins at 11 a.m.  The tournament will feature three-person teams and a scramble format.  The cost is 0, which doesn’t include the cost of a cart.  The menu will feature a taco bar plus chips and salsa or guacamole.  For information, call the clubhouse at 1-507-825-2592.
