Pittsburgh Steelers Podcast | Steel City Underground

Joe and Brian are back to bring you good tidings heading into the holidays by starting with the most important one of them all: Festivus!

Yes, there are airings of grievances, including some against Melvin Ingram (who jumped ship from Pittsburgh to Kansas City) but also retracted ones as well, with Pressley Harvin.

The duo previews the upcoming road trip for the Steelers playing at Arrowhead against a red-hot Chiefs team that has been hit with the viral bug going around the league. Is there enough there to impact the game and what might Pittsburgh need to do to in order to secure an almost must-needed victory?

In Week 15 of the NFL, there has been a similar trend of Week 14 with coaches going for it on 4th down in the red zone or not taking an extra point to tie a game and go into OT.

What The Football? (WTF!)

The Ravens passed on a field goal attempt to come away with zero points, and then mind-bogglingly went for it all with a two-point attempt that ultimately cost them their second game in two weeks: wins matter in the NFL, and points are how you win. It made no sense!

Quarterbacks are landing on the COVID list now, placing backups to the backups filling in, or teams signing contingency plans off of other practice squads or the street, creating chaos in games.

Also, the Steelers win dramatically with Joe Haden making the play of the year, and New Orleans shuts out Tampa Bay, or more accurately, Tom Brady.

Listen in to all of the WTF moments of Week 15 with Terry Fletcher.

Noah Freeman joins Joe Kuzma to review the aftermath of the Pittsburgh Steelers 19-13 victory over the Tennessee Titans.

While the Steelers offense never truly got going on Sunday, the defense did the unthinkable, pitching a second-half shutout and forcing four turnovers… largely in part to having all of their big guns back, such as Joe Haden.

Some other schematic changes helped Pittsburgh’s defense too. Joe and Noah cover this, plus one of the worst displays of officiating in recent memory!

There’s still a subset of fans upset about not drafting Dan Marino. Yes, we’re talking 30-some odd years ago, and only now because for the last five years, they’ve wanted the Steelers to draft a quarterback in the first round to replace Ben Roethlisberger.

As usual, Joe Kuzma hops on the horn to talk (yet again) why first round picks are ill-advised, and to point out why the Steelers have only used a first round pick on quarterbacks twice since selecting Terry Bradshaw in 1970.

Joe also has a brief discussion on taking a running back in the first round, which some fans have now criticized the team for doing in lieu of keeping James Conner. Why that line of thinking is flawed and how worse off the Steelers may have been is also covered in this episode.

It was a tough one Steelers Nation… but they sure did make it interesting!

After surrendering 29 points to the Minnesota Vikings, and a career day to their returning running back Dalvin Cook, the Steelers somehow got to within eight points near the end of the game, with its final play still leaving the result in the balance.

Joe and Brian are up late to cover this one, which had enough bizarre moments and bad football to make you wonder how the score ended up as it did!

Week 13 saw more strange outcomes in NFL games.

Terry Fletcher takes you through Buffalo, where wind and cold impacted the Bills and Patriots, and then to John Harbaugh’s decision to go for two at the end of the Steelers-Ravens game.

Then the Detroit Lions celebrate their first win of the season, which included a quarterback’s bikini-glad girlfriend stealing part of the spotlight!

The Baltimore Ravens are no longer the top team in the AFC – and they owe the Pittsburgh Steelers for that!

Joe and Brian discuss yet another classic matchup in the long-going rivalry between Mike Tomlin and John Harbaugh, with another close game that came down to the wire. They also talk about what this means going forward for the Steelers chances of not only making the playoffs, but also winning the division, as well as a look ahead at Thursday night’s game against the Minnesota Vikings.

The Pittsburgh Steelers look to keep their division and postseason hopes alive when they host the Baltimore Ravens at Heinz Field this Sunday.

The early outlook seems bleak but Joe Kuzma takes you through some stats and scenarios that show the Steelers have a fighting chance in this game – provided they are at full strength.

Program Note: Sorry folks, but I blanked and didn’t mention enough about Baltimore’s defense. Aside from Marlon Humphrey, keep an eye on Chuck Clark, the next playmaking safety in the Ravens line. However, the Steelers would be best suited to attack the Ravens defense with TE Pat Freiermuth, as their pass defense is below the line and especially so against tight ends.

Tune in to hear more takes, aside from the one that wasn’t mentioned!
