Pittsburgh Steelers Podcast | Steel City Underground

We’re a little light on a Packers preview, since it’s still the preseason and most of last week’s news still applies for this Thursday’s game. With just a few brief notes, Joe and Brian gloss over the upcoming exhibition game in Titletown to talk quarterbacks.

Specifically, backup quarterbacks.

There’s a hotly contested battle in Pittsburgh between Landry Jones, Joshua Dobbs, and Mason Rudolph which has most yinzers already counting Jones or Dobbs as the odd man out. However, when we take a look around the rest of the league, we’ll quickly notice that the Steelers are rich at the passer position in the context of the next man up under center.

We’ll go through each team’s depth chart and ask this question: “Who would you rather have?”

The answers might surprise you!

Terry is baaaack!

Preseason is exactly what we call it: PRESEASON.

For half of the league, these exhibition games are job interviews. Rosters will be trimmed in half by September, but that doesn’t stop fans from all over the country from wanting to fire everyone from the owner to the water boy.

Others are already booking their Super Bowl plans. (Hello Browns fans!)

Needless to say the first week of the preseason presented many WTF moments, including an overblown “Deflategate” controversy here in Pittsburgh.

Are we sleep depraved or did we lose our minds with that headline?!

We’ll let our listeners decide as Joe and Brian discuss the Steelers huge victory over the defending Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night.

Yes, that is sarcasm. We do realize this is preseason football and that most of the stars from both sides were absent from the playing field. We also know that the “victory’ doesn’t officially count but that doesn’t mean we were any less excited for some real (or somewhat real) football to finally be played!

With that in mind, there were several observations to be made from the game, including battles at more than one position, including what has started as a hotly contested quarterback competition. Plus, who is the odd man out in a deep running back room and which players in the secondary came to play Thursday night?

Joe and Zach once rejoin forces once again to discuss several narratives surrounding Steelers training camp.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan recently made some comments about pressure on players in practice: everyone is out there grading what these players do as if a routine intended to make them better for the regular season were an actual game. The duo takes Shanahan’s words and puts them into context with recent developments during the Steelers camp.

Some players have been good, great, or somewhere in-between. However, that doesn’t mean there are a two dozen spots on the current roster up for grabs! Draft pedigree and depth at certain positions also dictate who may receive a chance to shine during these offseason workouts.

Also, the two will talk about some other topics, including some roster moves, plus how we can’t look too much into injuries and how fatigue plays a role in camp performance and players watching from the sidelines.

“Steelers Nation Across the Nation” is a Steel City Undergrounds series hosted by Terry Fletcher, where she takes you on a virtual walk across the country to find the best Steelers bars, fan clubs, and places to watch games.

This week Terry tracks down some places to catch a Steelers game in the heart of the Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles turf. One of the “greenest” places to watch games is at an Irish Pub, but despite the connection between that color and the local team!

Today’s episode starts in the suburbs then works back toward the city and into back streets of downtown Philly where good food, great beer, and Steelers Nation is lurking!

SCU’s resident Jack of All Trades Zach Metkler joins today’s show to discuss what he and Joe Kuzma saw over the weekend at the Pittsburgh Steelers Training Camp hosted by St. Vincent’s College.

Today's episode sounds like the usual “camp darling” conversation but there’s quite a bit of information covered from quarterback and tight end play, plus certain players who truly stood out in their position groups, including our early "Ike Redman Award" candidates.

Joe also tells a story for the autograph seekers that’s one for the ages as well as more details on Sunday's injury report.

What was meant to be a “pre-camp” look at the Ravens depth chart instead turns to a preseason outlook for the Steelers rival.

Joe and Brian, after being derailed by Mike Tomlin comments and Le’Veon Bell contract drama, refocus on that “other team” in the AFC North on today’s show. The Ravens started camp earlier than most teams and already have additional concerns on top of what looks like a patchwork with some of the team’s positional groups.

The two will have a look at the roster from top to bottom to compare last year’s Ravens team and see if the 2018 edition looks like an improvement.

On today’s episode Terry continues her quest to find the best Steelers bars around the country, this time in South Florida. Personal recommendations as well as user submissions from our listeners highlight Steelers Nation favorites far away from Pittsburgh!

Despite being nearly 1,200 miles away from Heinz Field, the Miami/Fort Lauderdale area has several great places to take in a game.

A former Pittsburgh Steeler joined FOX Sports Undisputed program last week and stated that New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is better than Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin.

I was waiting for a Captain Obvious advertising tie-in, as what Steelers all-time sacks leader James Harrison said is fairly common knowledge. I dismissed it, but the internet blew up with their usual overreaction!

Today I, Joe Kuzma, fly solo on the Steel City Underground Steelers Podcast to share my thoughts, not so much on Harrison (who played under Belichick for a total of roughly six weeks) rather, those people who are so quick to throw Mike Tomlin under the bus for his lack of “success”.

I have some comparisons to make between Tomlin and his other peers currently coaching in the NFL, plus I’ll revisit some research from earlier this year comparing the Steelers head coach to his franchise predecessors and other head coaches currently in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
