  • On Creativity and Motherhood with Amy Tangerine

I have permission each and every day to pursue my craft in order to take love and care of myself and be my best self for the most important people in my life. – Amy Tangerine

On this episode of the Plan Simple Meals Podcast, I’m so, so excited to talk with Amy Tangerine, who runs a creative company that helps women believe that they are creative and that you can craft a life you love by infusing creativity, fun and intention into your every day.

We talk about the joy of making, which can be about the product, but is often about the process or the time you spent making. Amy talks about being really present in the moment when she is crafting.

As moms we can tap into our own creativity, but we can also nurture creativity in our kids. Amy talks about her mom starting her onto the idea that she could create things and people would buy them. But we also talk about how the plan to sell can detract from enjoying the process of creating.

    We talk about:

    • The value of being able to achieve your dreams no matter how big they are

    • Modeling creating for our kids and the pros and cons of craft kits

    • The power of paper planners and finding the way to plan that works for you

    • Everyone having 10 minutes a day to do something creative—and that there is creativity in everything we do if we recognize it

    • Giving ourselves permission to be creative, including the permission slip Amy shares in her book

    • Enjoying where you are and remembering that everything is a phase

    • How much a handwritten note can brighten somebody’s day

    BIO

Know what you would like to do with that time—doodling, journaling, scrapbook a page … whatever it is take 10 minutes every day.

GIVE PERMISSIONS. In her book, Amy has a permission slip for creativity, because you need to nourish your soul first. Give yourself permission: The most important of my day is the part where I take care of myself and feed my soul. I cannot be the best partner, the best employee, the best boss, the best parent or the best friend if I’m not at my best. Therefore, I have permission each and every day to pursue my craft in order to take love and care of myself and be my best self for the most important people in my life. Sign it, and live it.
WRITE A HANDWRITTEN NOTE. A handwritten note can brighten somebody’s day more than you know. Take a few minutes to write a note to your child, partner, or friend. Or write one to a client or coach or mentor. Don’t worry about perfection, just write from the heart and hand letter it.

  • Sticking to Your Weekly Workflow on the Well Planned Series with Megan Flatt

How do you stick to your weekly flow?

We’re back for another episode of Well Planned, a Plan Simple series with Megan Flatt. Megan is a business growth strategist who works with female entrepreneurs, specifically mom entrepreneurs. She helps women build thriving businesses that they can feel good about and sustain them while still being actively present in the day-to-day lives of their kids and their families. One of her secret weapons is the Weekly Workflow, which we talked about on a our Systems and Support episode. I like to call it time blocking.

A weekly workflow is different from your schedule, but it’s what helps you schedule all the important stuff. For example, you might have certain days you see clients and certain days that you work on creating content or record your podcast and certain days that you do other things. You assign certain blocks of time to particular task buckets—then you fit specific tasks into those buckets.

We discuss making a plan (even if you aren’t a planner), and sticking with it. We also talk about how to stay on track when stuff comes up—a kid emergency or something else that causes you to change your plan. Because stuff always comes up. So what do you do about it?

    We talk about:

    • Making sure there is enough buffer space to let you shift things around, for example to reschedule calls if you have a sick kid or to keep moving on a project if you are in a groove or even if something fun comes up that you want to do—if you schedule every week down to the minute you lose that necessary flexibility

    • Having a framework and then plotting out the week OR just taking the time to plot out the week, whichever is working for your life right now

    • Creating rules and boundaries, like saying I don’t see clients on Fridays, for yourself to help make things easier

    • Using a framework for home and selfcare stuff as well as business stuff (like Mia’s food rhythm or Megan making sure she eats lunch every day)

    • Deciding whether or not your plan is realistic and what needs to happen for it to be realistic—and getting realistic about how we are actually spending our time

    • Accounting for transitions between activities—you need time to stretch or get more water or switching gears mentally

    • Knowing your own personality and what kind of accountability or motivation you need

    • We touched on motherhood and balance and being the default parent, but we’d love to talk about it some more

Have a question for Mia and Megan?

You will get prompted to record your question and we’ll try to answer it.

    Doable Changes from this episode:
ADD BUFFER TIME. Try adding buffer time into your day. Think of this as transition or runway time, the time you need in between activities. This might mean 10 minutes between client calls to use the bathroom and refresh your water or 5 minutes before you need to leave the house to gather things you need. Then add buffer time to your week. Know that if you have a sick kid one day or a project runs over that there is some extra time build into your week to absorb at least some of that.
SET ONE HABIT. Pick one thing that you will make a habit. It could be filling your car with gas on the same day and time every week or putting your phone in the other room when you are focusing on writing. Pick ONE thing and start to do it regularly until it becomes routine.
TRACK YOUR TIME. We tend to underestimate how long it takes to do things and how long we are distracted sometimes. Start jotting down when you start a task and when you finish it. Then start using this data when you plan. If week after week it takes you an hour and a half to write a blog post, stop trying to give yourself half an hour to write it. If you are going to write for three hours and halfway through you go to write a Facebook post and get lost in there for an hour, note that. Start to see where you are actually spending your time.

  • Going Within with Kim Marie

Our soul actually longs to turn in at this time.

    – Kim Marie

On this episode of the Plan Simple Meals Podcast, I’m really excited to talk with Kim Marie, a transformational life coach who creates an amazing journal this time every year. If you’ve been listening to the podcast for a while, this may sound familiar, because I had her on last year.

At the time I had just discovered her journal, but hadn’t had a chance to use it. Now that I have, I wanted to have her back on to talk about it again, because it was so transformational for me last year. For years I had embraced the idea of getting quiet and sitting by the fire and writing during the holidays—and then I saw something Kim Marie posted about using this time for journaling in a very powerful way.

The Sacred Nights Journal focuses on the period from December 24 to January 6. This process being open to everyone; even though the sacred nights fall in the Christian Christmas and Advent season, they are also tied into winter solstice and changes in the natural world and light. The process helps move us away from the hustle and bustle and consumerism of the season and extend the magic. Kim says, “I realized not only was this beautiful tool for quieting myself and really gleaning the wisdom of my own inner self during this time but, it became like a guide book, like a map for my life in the coming year and that what was incredibly powerful to me.”

    We talk about:

    • The power of waking up and remembering and recording your dreams

    • Connecting with your journal every day, even if you just jot down one thing—how whatever you write down, even if you don’t understand it at the time, gives you guidance in the coming year

    • The 12 virtues, or practices, associated with the months, like courage

    • Finding our truth in the world and recentering

    • Creating rituals during this time of year, lighting candles, reading stories, slowing down

    • Taking the responsibilities and the commitments you have and weaving them in with intention around what you’re trying to create during this time of year.

    • Taking space for sacred time for yourself even when your family is around

Kim Marie is a Transformational Life Coach supporting her clients to awaken their inner wisdom and transform their lives. Through her powerful programs and courses, including Mother’s Medicine, Wisdom Rising, and her forthcoming online group coaching program, Awakening Wisdom, Kim supports women to remember who they are, reconnect to what matters most, and rebirth themselves into the life of freedom they envision. She is the mother of two teenaged boys.

    Doable Changes from this episode:
JOURNAL DAILY. Write down one dream or even part of one. Jot down a word or phrase that sticks with you even if you don’t know why. If you have time, write more, but make space to write something every day. Kim Marie’s Sacred Nights journal does an amazing job walking you through a thought process for the 12 days after Christmas, but you could simply reflect and journal on your own if that’s what feels doable to you.
CREATE A RITUAL. Create a ritual that slows you down at this time of year and moves you with intention toward the feeling and kind of space you want. That might mean lighting and Advent wreath or eating dinner by candlelight. It might mean taking time to read holiday stories or have five minutes of quiet together near the fire. Choose a ritual that speaks to you and make space for it.
SET AN INTENTION & CREATE A PLAN. This time of year can easily fall into chaos. There is so much to be done and so much external pulling us to buy and eat and drink and do. Getting really clear on your intention and how you will make it happen is the first step to holiday season you love. And this can happen, even in our real, busy lives. You can take the responsibilities and the commitments that you have and weave them with intention around what you’re trying to create during that time of year. Give yourself a little quiet time to journal about what you want and how you can make it happen. Then schedule things—or schedule white space—so that you have it going forward.

  • A Doable Change Episode on Eating Your Veggies
Fruits and veggies are so important to our thriving health! I sometimes talk about what we could take out, but adding the 10 servings of suggested fruits and veggies a day is huge!!!!
Eating more fruits and vegetables reduces inflammation thus reducing your risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and some forms of cancer.
The fiber in fruits and vegetables may help to lower blood cholesterol levels.

Foods that are rich in potassium like oranges and bananas may help you maintain a healthy blood pressure.
Almost all fruits and many vegetables are low in fat, calories and sodium.
Fruits and vegetables are naturally cholesterol free.
