  • Planning Food for the Holidays with Angela Litzinger
On this episode of the Plan Simple Meals Podcast, I’m really excited to talk with my friend and gluten/allergen free food expert, Angela Litzinger. She’s an amazing cook and blogger, and we’re talking about planning for the holidays.
Even if you don’t like the holiday promotions that happen earlier and earlier in the year, thinking about and prepping for the holidays now can make things so much calmer for you—and help you stick to your budget by spreading things out. When Angela and I talked in late October, she was already starting to cook for the holidays, so now is definitely not too early to get started.
Angela suggests starting by writing out what you plan to serve for any holiday meals (she plans for Thanksgiving and Christmas at the same time). The first time you do this, it will take a little longer, but save your plan, and if you tend to fall back on tradition, next year will be easier. Once you have a list of foods you want to serve, make your grocery list. Separate out pantry items (that you can buy any time, like canned pumpkin or nuts). You can keep an eye on sales and buy a few items each week to keep costs down. Then plan what you will make each week or weekend and make sure you add any fresh ingredients you’ll need on hand to your list.
    We talk about:
Taking charge of a meal or volunteering to cook to reduce stress levels if you have specific ways you eat, such as gluten free
Asking for a clean, separate space to be free of cross-contamination if you are eating at another home and feeling confident about providing the food you and your family needs
Making double batches of what you are cooking anyway and freezing some for the days around the holidays to add more ease and allow more family time
Exactly how to freeze meals, what freezes well, and how to keep track of what’s in the freezer
Teaching kids to cook and getting their help to batch cook

    Doable Changes from this episode:
PLAN YOUR HOLIDAY MEALS. Plan what you will serve for any holidays where you are hosting or if you need to prepare food your family can eat. Write out the menus for these meals and any other other special foods you plan to make (Christmas cookies for example). Then make a master shopping list for all the foods you need to buy.
PREP HOLIDAY MEALS AHEAD. Cooking or prepping ahead, a little each week, can make your holidays easier. Find a time that works for you each week to do a little extra cooking for the holidays. See Angela’s blog post and Thanksgiving menu for ideas of things to prep ahead.
BATCH & FREEZE. Angela recommends doubling up on what you are cooking anyway as a way to stock your freezer with meals that will make the days around the holidays easier. The idea of filling your freezer came up recently to help moms with business as they were getting ready for a launch. Having meals in the freezer is a gift to yourself, because you can nourish yourself and your family and get a break on a day you need it.

  • Starting a Business after “Moming” with Megan Flatt and Mia Moran
Do you have a checklist for launching or any advice about launching and still being a very hands-on mom?
We’re back for our 6th episode of Well Planned, a Plan Simple series with Megan Flatt. Megan is a business growth strategist who works with female entrepreneurs, specifically mom entrepreneurs. She helps women build thriving businesses that they can feel good about and sustain them while still being actively present in the day-to-day lives of their kids and their families. She has a lot to say about our question today.
Today, our question comes from a mom with an eight year old and a eleven year old. She’s been a stay at home mom, and now she is about to launch a business dedicated to helping highly sensitive women thrive. She asks for advice, or even a checklist, for launching—and specifically how to launch while being a mom and still needing to put a lot of time into that.
We start with some high-level advice, but we’ll get to the details and the checklist, promise!
Some of our key takeaways are:
Clarity comes from action. Megan suggests getting your idea or your product or your business out as quickly as possible and then wearing your researcher hat to test, tweak, and polish from there. Don’t hide or get lost in creating a website and the perfect logo and all that. Everything we create can evolve with us. Nothing is set in stone.
Do less better. Aks yourself, “What is the next right decision for me?” Then pick one social media channel or one product or one ideal client to focus on. There are so many things you could do, but you’ll get further by doing less better.
Create systems to control your content. One way to do less better is to not feel like you have to recreate the wheel constantly when it comes to content, but if your content is on Facebook and Instagram or another social platform, make sure you have it in a file you control too. That makes it easier to find when you want to adapt or reuse content and helps protect you as social platforms continue to evolve.
Write it all down. Writing down your plan helps you see get really clear on what you are doing. It also helps you see where you are trying to do 4 months worth of work in 6 weeks. You can also save space for an idea that isn’t the right idea for right now. Say you want to start a podcast, but right now you are focused on launching your new Mastermind, you can put your podcast plan into Q3 of next year.
Start with the end result. Before you start mapping out steps 1, 2, 3, think about the end result you want. It’s easy to get sidetracked by the things we think we should or need to do, if you really tap in into what you want and what your goal is now, most likely you can figure out how to get there. It’s often simpler than we think if we stay focused on the results we want.

  • A Magical Life with Lisa Marie Grantham

The journey can feel very long and mundane but, it’s so worth it in the end.

    – Lisa Marie Grantham

On this episode of the Plan Simple Meals Podcast, I’m really excited to talk with Lisa Marie Grantham, a coach and spiritual teacher and the founder of the School of Magical Living. She considers herself a student of life is is passionate about so many things. She discovered coaching and loved it, but burning out turned her to start her online business.

She had three small kids when she started her online business journey, and today is an empty nester. She divorced and moved and felt like she was starting over at 49, but now finds herself in a sweet spot in her life.

Thinking about the quote “magic is the new yoga,” she discusses her interest in the divine. Her’s how she explains it: “magical living is working in alignment with universal law, in alignment with your deepest desires and intentions, and co-creating with the divine. That’s basically magical living in a nutshell.”  We talk about how magical living is part of your OM, and how to fit that into your own FLOW system.

    We talk about:

    • Bookending your day (starting and ending with a sacred practice)

    • The divine coming to each person in the way that is right for them and how to curate your own spiritual practice

    • Realizing that our kids can do things for themselves and to help around the house—and that they need to to become self-sufficient

    • Having things around, like crystals and essential oils, that help keep you on track and surrounding yourself with beauty

    • Making the mundane, magical (even laundry)

    • The matrix of the elements fire, earth, air, and water and creativity

BOOKEND YOUR DAY WITH A SACRED PRACTICE. Lisa Marie starts and ends her day with prayer. You might choose to meditate, light a candle, express gratitude. You could say something like Lisa Marie does, “ Thank you for this day. Thank you for using me in the highest way possible. I’m done. I’m outta here.” It doesn’t have to be a big, long practice. A few minutes—or even a few seconds—can do a lot. Choose a simple OM practice and start and end your day with it.
ADD MAGIC TO THE MUNDANE. There are things we have to do that feel mundane—laundry, paying bills, making dinner. Try adding magic to these things. Add essential oils when you wash clothes to help you stay present when you fold them. Light a candle and enjoy a glass of wine when you pay bills. Shake off your bad mood before you start cooking dinner.
INVOLVE YOUR KIDS. If you have babies, this may isn’t the doable change for you right now, but tuck it away. Help your kids learn self-sufficiency—and help yourself stop feeling like you have to do everything. Give kids a task appropriate for their age. If they haven’t done it before, you’ll need to teach them. They could set the table, fold laundry, make dinner (or at least the salad), wipe down the counter, sweep the floor … there are lots of options and what they can and do do will change over time.

  • Starting a Business on the Well Planned Series with Megan Flatt

"Chase the vision, not the money; the money will end up following you." -Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos

On this episode of the Plan Simple Meals Podcast, I’m really excited to talk with Megan and explore a question about launching a store.

We talk about “flow” vs. balance. Especially how sometimes you flow a little more to the family side and sometimes you flow a little more to the business side. We even acknowledge that a little bit of chaos is okay too—and even necessary to get things done sometimes.

And then there’s selling stuff. Usually when we start a business, we go into it because we are passionate about doing something or something we make. We want to share our skills or our product with people and make their lives better. But to do that, we need to sell it, and that’s hard for a lot of people. Selling doesn’t have to feel slimy, but we need to unpack our feelings about selling and learn to do it.

    We talk about:

    • The mental shift of saying “I have something to offer” rather than thinking about sales

    • Embracing who you are and what you bring to the table

    • Focusing on one thing and really leaning into it—and using that focused effort as research to see what works

    • Telling people you are there and what you do

    • Megan’s “so that” exercise to get crystal clear on why you do what you do and what you really sell

    • Thinking about sorting not selling and not taking it personally when people don’t buy

Have a question for Mia and Megan?

    Go to plansimplemeals.com/ask.

You will get prompted to record your question and we’ll try to answer it.

Or just email your question to [email protected]

She’s been working with clients for years to create strategic growth plans in their business that allow them to scale while still being present for the important moments in their families’ lives. She shows Mama CEOs with big vision and great ideas how to get those big CEO ideas into a day-by-day plan where they actually happen.

  • Live Exceptional with JB Owens

Nothing is impossible and there’s not such thing as no.

    – JB Owens

On this episode of the Plan Simple Meals Podcast, I’m so excited to talk with JB Owens. She calls herself an Extraordinary Lifestyle Designer and her most rewarding work is helping women transition from doing what they have to, to doing what they love. She’s a megapreneur with a lot of businesses. (She even helped me bring the FLOW planner to life!) Even though she has so much going on she doesn’t seem scattered.

She doesn’t see anything as impossible. When she sees an idea from somebody, she starts asking questions like, “How do we get that done? What do you need me to do? What are the steps to make that happen?” And I love that she helps other women learn to overcome what feels impossible.

She shares part of her journey from abusive relationships to single mom to taking charge of her life and becoming a megapreneur. The biggest take away was that she didn’t listen to buy into the stereotypes that others want her to fit into. She decided she didn’t have to go on government support just because she should; she decided that a single mom could travel the world—and so much more.

    We talk about:

    • Her line of non-toxic, reusable feminine products

    • Her morning routine that starts and 4 and includes meditation, journaling, a run, and writing (and knowing that you don’t have to do what somebody else is doing—you need to do what works for you)

    • Putting the thing you don’t want to do at the top of your list.

    • Getting dressed for work so that you can be your best

    • The importance of boundaries—and of getting back to your practice when you decide to bend them

    • Getting quiet so you can hear your answers (meditation works, but so do a lot of other things)—and the answer she heard to take her kids and travel for the year to teach them about the world and other cultures and community

    • Learning to pull from your own well

    • Changing work into fun as a way to do all the things you want to and her hack of asking every morning, “What’s gonna make me happy today?”

    Doable Changes from this episode:
EAT THE FROG. What’s the thing you don’t want to do today? (It might be the thing you’ve moved from list to list to list because you keep not wanting to do it.) Put that at the top of your list, and don’t do anything else until you’re done. The goal here isn’t to put a huge project at the top of your list, but to put a task that you are dreading there so that you stop avoiding it and wasting mental space on it.
PICK ONE THING THAT WILL MAKE YOU HAPPY. Each morning, ask yourself, “What will make me happy today?” Write it down. This helps in a few ways: One, you learn that you’re valuable. Two, you get the endorphins you need to understand what happiness feels like because you deserve it. Three, when you do it again and again, it builds your happiness muscle.
GET BACK TO YOUR PRACTICE. So many of us stop doing something that we love or that really serves us—our morning routine or our exercise or eating the food that our body loves. We miss a day because we are tired or sick or it’s a holiday, and then we stop. Boundaries can have some give to them if we know how to get back to our practice. What is one thing you had been doing and stopped, not because it didn’t serve you but because you got off track? Commit to doing that today (or if it’s a morning routine, commit to tomorrow.)
