  • Strength Training, Powerlifting and The Mental Edge with Alex Ciccone – PTP243
In today's episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast we talk to Alex Ciccone about strength training, powerlifting and the mental edge. Alex has an amazing presence in the Instagram world and we have been following each other for a while. We were able to meet face to face at the Animal Justice event in December and immediately hit it off. Today we talked about a few interesting things. We talked about his journey to Veganism, his soccer career and how he got into men's physique and powerlifting competitions. We hit the topics of nutrition for building muscle as well as the "P" word…protein. Whether you're 15 or 50 there is something to be taken away in this episode. It's a good share for anyone who hits the gym. Alex Ciccone is a vegan lifestyle social media influencer who found his love for spreading awareness soon after going vegan over 4 years ago. His primary reason was for the ethical treatment of animals. Alex provides education and entertainment through different creative content across Instagram, his blog, Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat (and coming soon a YouTube channel). Whether it be vegan infographics, news stories, memes and everything between, for Alex it's about keeping things positive and loving. He wants to not only align with vegan values, but also to reach as many individuals as possible and help in their journey to being or becoming vegan. Alex has a particular interest in fitness as he grew up playing competitive level soccer. After falling in love with strength training, he became a certified personal trainer. Fitness is a very important part in his story of becoming vegan – as he uses this motivation to debunk the myth that vegans are "weak and malnourished". That lead Alex to compete in a men's physique competition as a vegan and pursue powerlifting. At the end of the day it is always about spreading awareness for Alex – to show all the amazingness that the vegan lifestyle has to offer! In this episode we discuss: Win, win, win Growing up playing soccer Animal-based protein The vegan journey and people's reactions The fluffy bunny The mental edge and change Teens and making good choices Complete protein Men's physique and powerlifting Supplements Creatine Infographics Hunger cues How can parents help? • Run, Eat & See The World with Ultrarunner Kim Matthews – PTP236
In today's episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast we talk to Kim Matthews, the ultrarunner from Run, Eat, World. Kim was not always a runner, as you will learn in this interview, nor was she always eating a plant-based diet. Just like all of us, she is on a journey. Kim is an Australian ultra trail runner currently living in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. She began running in 2008 by signing up for a local 5km event with her husband and has not looked back. Over the years her distances gradually increased, before finally completing a marathon in 2014. After a six month break to go traveling in 2015, she returned to Australia with two goals: to switch from a vegetarian diet to a plant-based lifestyle and to complete an ultramarathon. The first goal was easy, much easier than expected. The second goal was achieved three months later, a 50 km trail race in Victoria, Australia. This was Kim's first win in a running event. One month after the 50 km race Kim and her husband moved to Bangkok, Thailand, where her love for trails and traveling continued to grow. They spent 18 months there before relocating to Vietnam. Since arriving in South East Asia Kim has finished 15 races, 10 of these being ultramarathons. She has been awarded first place in 14 of these races. Her biggest accomplishment to date is being crowned the Asia Trail Master champion of 2017. Kim attributes her success to hard work, luck and, of course, a healthy diet. • Making Cooking Easy For Everyone with Sam Turnbull – PTP235
In today's episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast, we talk to Sam Turnbull about making vegan cooking easy for everyone. A lot of people think they have to eat like a rabbit if they adopt a vegan diet and don't end up making a change despite their understanding that this can make a difference in their health and for the environment. We talk to Sam about how she has "veganized" her favorite comfort foods and made them affordable and simple for everyone. Sam doesn't get wrapped up with fancy superfood ingredients and we can attest that flavor is never compromised with her recipes. This show is going to give you everything you need for keeping costs down, the ingredient lists short, and it will even get you thinking about what you can make for your loved ones on Valentine's Day this year. We hope you're not hungry now, but you definitely will be by the end of this episode. Sam Turnbull is the creative voice and vision behind the popular blog It Doesn't Taste Like Chicken, author of the cookbook Fuss-Free Vegan, and now a new YouTuber. Growing up in a family of foodies, chefs, butchers, and hunters, (yep, it's true), Sam was determined to prove that vegan cooking didn't have to be all kale and quinoa. Her easy, comforting, satisfying, and totally non-scary recipes struck a chord with vegans, vegetarians, and even carnivores everywhere. Sam's first cookbook has been met with rave reviews and is already in its second printing after only one month since being release. She also won the #LoveLentils competition and had the honor of filming a cooking show with Chef Michael Smith.
