  • Running Across America and Wilderness Therapy with David Chandler – PTP254
In today's episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast, we talk to David Chandler about running across America and wilderness therapy. When we first learned about David, we had a lot of questions. Did he run or walk across America? Did he do it consecutively? Was it self-supported? What was going on with this guy to give him the tenacity to do it? After hopping on the phone for a quick conversation, we quickly learned the David had a lot of strength both in his running abilities and character that we knew we wanted to share with you. From the planning that took place, to the logistics around food and accommodation, to his hopes of bringing attention to wilderness therapy, there are lessons to be taken away from this episode that can show almost anyone that if you want something badly enough, it is indeed possible. David is a plant-based ultramarathoner. His passions are running, nature and helping others. For the last three years, he has worked as a wilderness therapy guide at SUWS of the Carolinas with kids with mental health and substance abuse struggles. SUWS helps empower kids through the lens of nature and teaches communication and coping skills. As you will hear, David recently spent time running across America. He ran 2900 miles across America from Santa Monica, CA to Wrightsville Beach, NC to raise money for scholarships for low-income students to attend SUWS. He has raised $11,000 so far. David continues to run ultramarathons to raise money for these kids he still works with. • Getting Ready For Triathlon Season – PTP253
In this episode of the Plant Trainers Podcast, we take you back in time to our awesome show on the sport of triathlon. Since the season has already begun and there are so many listeners who are heading into this sport this year we wanted to make sure you didn't miss all these important tips. You can get very overwhelmed with what to do and what to buy, so we simplified it for you in this episode so you don't get carried away. We know there are some of you out there who are thinking, I am interested in triathlon, but I missed the last three months of training, so I'll wait for next year. But the truth is, there is no need to wait. As you will hear in this podcast, there are shorter distances you can get into. As long as you can walk, balance on a bike and swim to save your life or do back crawl, a little bit of planned practice can get you through a tiny intro to the sport. And of course, you can just start training in the three disciplines throughout this season and see how you feel in a few months. If you're really not ready, you've got a head start for the next season. Since we first recorded this episode a few things have changed. Adam has become a much stronger swimmer than he ever was. This had to do with a bit of correction and some good swim programs Adam designed. But mostly from just putting in the time in the pool. Oh, and he has completed Ironman Louisville (his 2nd) since the recording as well. We forgot to mention that ENERGYbits is something we both used as an energy source and the RECOVERYbits are part of our regime too. They are light, easy to ingest and can be even eaten on the course. In this episode we discuss: Equipment Types of races Training Fueling with solids and liquids Transitions The course Packing Community Porta potties and all the gross stuff Bike check Starts Rest and recovery Kid's Tris Choosing a bike Links to things we mentioned: #TrainingForLife T-Shirt Energybits – use code "PlantTrainers" for 20% off Ride to Conquer Cancer Three Simple Words Changed My Life Multisport Canada Subaru Triathlon Series Ironman Transition Area Pic Video – Changing A Flat Tire Triathlon Blog 101 with DOWNLOADABLE CHECKLIST Blog of Adam's stolen bike Natural Anti-inflammatory Shot Recipe Body Glide Speed Laces Running Hat Sunscreen Oakley Garmin 910XT Compression Socks Calf Sleeves Amrita Gear – use code "PlantTrainers" for 15% off Bib Race Belt Rudy Project Helmet Aqua Sphere Kayenne Goggles Nineteen wetsuit Speedo Endurance+ Swim Jammer Thank you to this month's Patrons for supporting us on Patreon: "Joe" Millie Pearson Mary Lou Fusi Carmen Fanous Emily Iaconelli Spanish Armada Michele Olender Don't forget to contact us at [email protected] with your question for our Plant Trainers Facebook Lives! • Dementia and The Alzheimer's Solution with Team Sherzai – PTP252
In this episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast, we talk to Doctors Ayesha and Dean Sherzai, also known as Team Sherzai, about dementia and the Alzheimer's solution. We have them break down dementia and give us all a better understanding of what brain diseases are plaguing us here in North America. Unsurprisingly, we learn that these diseases are spreading throughout the world just like diabetes and heart disease as the fast food culture migrates. We talk about the ideas around genes, preventing and reversing dementias so people can forget the myths and really understand the facts. Of course, Team Sherzai explains their whole body NEURO plan they use to educate their patients and readers on lifestyle change so that Alzheimer's disease does not have to grab hold of its victims earlier or as forcibly as it does. As we know this affects not just the individual, but their family members who care about them as well. Listening to this episode and making even the smallest change can not only help you postpone or inevitably stop brain diseases from invading your life, but it can help with so many other prevalent diseases as well. This is the protocol for ultimate health. By 2030 a staggering 75 million people on our planet will be suffering from dementia and that number is estimated to double every 20 years. Please share with this episode with those you know need to hear this important message by emailing it to them directly or posting it on your social media. As Co-Directors of the Alzheimer's Prevention Program at Loma Linda University Medical Center, Dr. Dean and Dr. Ayesha Sherzai, through research and their extensive collective medical backgrounds, work to demystify the steps to achieving long-term brain health and the prevention of devastating diseases such as Alzheimer's and dementia. They are also the authors of the much-acclaimed book, The Alzheimer's Solution: A Breakthrough Program to Prevent and Reverse the Symptoms of Cognitive Decline at Every Age. For more information, visit TeamSherzai.com In this episode we discuss: Social media is part of the solution and the journey Dementia vs Alzheimer's disease Brain health Is Alzheimer's reversible How to flag poor brain health early Who's at the greatest risk Risk factors Genes Diet Oil NEURO – Preventative protocol Exercise stress. • Surviving A Heart Attack and Being Flatlined with Dave Willits – PTP 251
In today's episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast, we talk to Dave Willits known as the man who survived a heart attack after being flatlined. Dave seemed like a healthy, sporty guy on the outside, but little did he know that he would have to be shocked 11 times to be brought back to life. As you will hear during the interview, Dave's dietary lifestyle, with an added love for pizza, was a contributing factor to this horrible event. We have a special place in our hearts (no pun intended) for this episode. It's just not sexy. What do we mean by that? Well, Dave didn't have a food addiction. He didn't have 100+ pounds to lose. He didn't have a drug addiction. We would never try to take away from the stories of others, including our guests and friends who have come so far and changed so much. But the truth is, if you can see it on the outside, you know you need to make a change on the inside and these stories are easy to relate to by others in similar physical conditions. But with Dave, a lot like Adam, there were no major outward red flags screaming change your life now, before it's too late. If you look a certain way in the mirror, it's easy to think that you are invincible and these devastating events only happen to other people, and not you. Over 12 years ago we lost a good friend to a heart attack…and on the outside, he was one of the last people of our group of friends who you would think would go off to play floor hockey and never return home again. We want to help others make those changes before it's too late even if they are not obese, on other medications or suffering from serious diseases. No one deserves to go through what Dave did especially when it is preventable. Dave Willits is a simple and humble guy. He is out there trying to help others find the plant-based lifestyle. Today he is a single dad of a 22-year-old son, 13-year-old daughter. He's been the production manager for an automotive manufacturer for 20 years. Prior to that, he was in the pizza business for about 25 years, which may have been a big contributor to the massive heart attack that changed his life forever. You don't want to miss this story. In this episode we discuss: Life before flatlining Looking good on the outside The heart attack His health today Dr. Esselstyn Seeing results Committing to plant-based Actionable tips starting out plant-based Favorite meals Message for the masses Links to things we mentioned: Thank you to our sponsor, Le Grand Power of Plants – "Let Your Food Be Your Remedy" #TrainingForLife T-Shirt Dave Willits – Facebook A Forefather of Plant-Based Nutrition, Dr. Caldwell Essylstyn – PTP208 Plant-Based Nutrition Support Group – PBNSG The Inspiring & Motivating Josh LaJaunie – PTP207 Weight Loss & Ehlers Danlos Syndrome with Tim Kaufman – PTP209 Thank you to this month's Patrons for supporting us on Patreon: "Joe" Millie Pearson Mary Lou Fusi Carmen Fanous Emily Iaconelli Spanish Armada Michele Olender Don't forget to contact us at [email protected] with your question for our Plant Trainers Facebook Lives! • Food Is the Solution: What to Eat to Save the World with Matthew Prescott – PTP250
In today's episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast, we talk to the extremely intelligent Matthew Prescott about what to eat to save the world and the social and environmental issues associated with the current food production systems. There is a grave issue on planet earth and there is also a solution: food. We (as a society) have been trained to look away from the when our needs have a negative effect on the environment. This causes individuals to make up or repeat statements like "we will never run out of clean water" or "it takes more land to grow plants for humans than it does to raise cattle for food". So today we get to the bottom of these myths, allowing humans to have more intelligent and fact driven conversations about the state of our plant and the food on our plate. Our hope is this will allow the masses to make more informed decisions about what is on the end of their fork, knowing the impact it's having on local and global levels. Please (press pause) and share this podcast on social media right now as this issue does not only affect you but your children and grandchildren. Matthew Prescott is the author of Food Is the Solution: What to Eat to Save the World. He's an advisor to the Good Food Institute, Senior Director of Food & Agriculture for The Humane Society of the United States, and a leading figure in the global movement to reform how we farm and eat. A sought-after speaker and thought leader, Prescott has spent over a decade and a half sharing his ideas with Ivy League universities, Fortune 500 companies, consumers, and more. His work has helped lead to sweeping changes in the supply chains of hundreds of major food companies, impacted countless individuals' diets, and has been covered extensively by the media: his work has been featured by CNN, in the pages of the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, the Boston Globe, and countless more; he's been published in FORTUNE, the Washington Post, Barron's and others; and he was even once a guest on NPR's Wait Wait…Don't Tell Me. He lives in Texas with his wife, the writer Lara Prescott. In this episode we discuss: Finding plant-based The water crisis Thinking of yourself first Are we really running out of water?
