The psalms put words in our mouths when we, like the psalmists, face difficult days. But sometimes the contexts of the psalms seem so severe that we cannot fully identify with the words of the psalmist. Psalm 79 is one of those psalms. Can most western Christians identify with the psalmist who saw destruction and bloodshed all around? Not fully. But there are still lessons to be learned from his prayers in such days. In Psalm 77, the psalmist recounts the importance of remembering the deeds of the Lord for personal encouragement in times of trouble. In Psalm 78, he adds another reason why God's people should know their history. Listen in as we unpack it together.

The author of Psalm 77 is clearly a man torn. One minute he is calling aloud to the Lord in believing prayer ... and the next he is stunned speechless. And his confusion reminds us that such is not abnormal, even among God's saints. There is great encouragement in knowing that! But this psalm also gives us a strategy for pressing on in those confusing times, too. Listen in as we consider what that strategy is.

God won a great victory for his people in His overthrow of the Assyrians in 2 Kings 19. Psalm 76 records the victory song that was written to commemorate that deliverance. Listen in as we think about the strength and goodness of our God.

God "dwells in unapproachable light" (1 Tim 6.16). "How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways" (Rom 11.33). He is incomprehensible to our finite minds! And yet our eternity depends on knowing Him (John 17.3), and we must make every effort to do so (Hosea 6.3). How can it be? How can God be incomprehensible, yet knowable? "God is the Judge." What goes through your mind when you hear a sentence like that? Often, God's judgment is thought of as only a negative thing - His punishment of our sins.
