The 17th edition of the International Multihull Show is set to take place April 22-26. A record number of boats with electric and hybrid propulsion are taking part.
The show, at La Grande-Motte on France’s Mediterranean coast, demonstrates not just that multihulls have become one of the fastest-growing segments in global boating, but also how more and more boat builders and owners are embracing fossil-fuel-free (FFF) propulsion. In fact, 16 of the 80 exhibiting boats – 20% – are available with electric or hybrid as an option.

Multihulls partner especially well with electric and hybrid for a couple of reasons. The first is that two or three smaller hulls have less drag and are more efficient than monohulls, requiring less energy to move through water. The second is that the wider beams deliver larger surface areas for solar integration – with the bonus of more living space!
Also Multihull Of The Year Awards
As the name suggests, there are no monohulls at the Show, only catamarans and trimarans – both sail and power – and of course other manufacturers and retailers associated with the boat industry such as motors and sailmakers.
The show is also the home of the annual Multihull of the Year Awards (MOTY). Both the show and awards are presented by the Multihulls World magazine and website.
In this Plugboats Guide to Electric Boats Exhibitors we highlight some of the boats available with electric and hybrid propulsion – including those that are Finalists in the MOTY Awards – as well as some exhibiting electric motor companies.
With those 16 exhibiting multihulls and 10 MOTY Finalists, this is by far the most ‘electrified’ version of the show. There are also five electric motor companies with booths at La Grande-Motte along with three electrified RIB tenders and one electric jetski.

The Sixty Solar Power by Xquisite Yachts took over 6 years to develop under the guidance of Xquisite founder Tamas Hamor and his goal of building “a power boat that can sail around the world – without sails”. The boat has a diesel-electric hybrid configuration by E-Motion that works as both a serial or parallel hybrid. For the serial hybrid aspect it combines two 100 kW (≈ 130hp) electric motors with one 180kW Yanmar generator, and for the parallel there are two 500 hp diesel motors. That makes a number of modes available for different use cases.
The pure battery electric mode is mainly used for low speed occasions such as around harbours, as well as in open waters for speeds up to 8 knots (15 kph, 9 mph). When the battery is discharged to 30% level the generator automatically kicks in to recharge the battery and automatically shuts off when State of Charge (SOC) reaches 80%. That combination satisfies transoceanic speeds and needs, with the larger diesel engines used for things like island hopping where you might want speeds of up to 18 kts (33 kph, 20 mph). For speeds above 20 kts the generator of the diesel electric drive train becomes a motor to drive the shaft and propeller by itself, working alongside the high power diesel engines in what is called ‘Boost Mode’. The Earthling E-40 Powercat is the creation of John McGettigan of Earthling E-Propulsion, who modified a hull design from Alan Cardawine of Asia Catamarans and assembled the boat’s serial hybrid propulsion system. There is a powertrain in each hull, consisting of a Molabo ARIES 50 motor, 2 lithium-ion 11kWh battery modules and a Whisperpower 8.5kW Genverter. Components can be cross-connected between the hulls for redundancy – engineer speak for back up. With full battery charge the E-40 can travel up to 40 nautical miles (46mi/75km) at low speed, 30 nm (34mi/55km) at 8 knots (9mph/15kmh), and 20 nm (23mi/37km) at 10 knots (11.5mph/18kmh).
Altogether there is 44 kWh of battery energy available, which can be charged on shore, by roof mounted solar panels or the generators. The genset automatically kicks in when DOD (battery depth of discharge) is at 20%. It burns 2.5 litres of diesel per hour. Earthling website
