  • Rheumatic heart disease a ‘national shame’: Australian Medical Association
The Australian Medical Association launched its national 2016 report card on Indigenous health in Darwin, taking the unusual step of homing in on this one disease. The president of the AMA Dr Michael Gannon labelled the current rate of Rheumatic heart disease a national failure. The disease persists in Indigenous populations at a rate 55 times higher than in the general population. A disease of poverty, caused by squalid overcrowded housing, and untreated infections, the AMA wants to see the disease eradicated by 2031.

  • Fuel shortage at Melbourne Airport
A major fuel shortage at Melbourne Airport could cause flight delays, and mean diversions for international flights. The ABC understands a shipment of fuel has failed quality controls, leaving with airport with less than two million litres of aviation fuel.

  • What will Trump's Middle East policy mean for Israel?
One of the many unknowns about the coming Trump Presidency is Middle East policy. Donald Trump has given mixed signals on foreign and defence policy generally, and some of his campaign statements seemed to promise extremely simple solutions to very complex problems. So what will the Trump administration mean for Israel - which has a border with Syria, and which has long opposed the Obama government's policy on Iran?

  • White Ribbon defends itself against criticism from women's movement
There've been hundreds of anti-domestic violence events around the country today to mark White Ribbon Day. The campaign's grown every year over the last decade and a half. Along the way it's also attracted critics, who claim it's tokenistic at times, that it marginalises women, and fails to support frontline services. Prominent anti-domestic violence campaigners aired some of these claims with PM today, but White Ribbon Australia has strongly defended itself.

  • Dutton defiant on Lebanese Muslim remarks
The Immigration Minister Peter Dutton today blamed the Labor Leader Bill Shorten for the controversy that's followed his remarks on Lebanese Muslim migration to Australia. Debate's been raging for days, after Mr Dutton linked the resettlement of Lebanese Muslim refugees in the 1970s, with terror-related offences by their children and great grandchildren. Labor has accused the Minister of deliberately stoking racial hatred, while the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is strongly defending him.

  • Politicians squabble over backpacker tax rate
The Government's backpacker tax has failed in the Senate, and farmers relying on backpacker labour to pick fruit have been left in limbo. Labor and the Coalition want to tax backpackers at different rates. But because they haven't been able to reach a decision, a higher default rate of 32.5 per cent will come in from next year. Farmers say a tax that high will mean backpackers won't bother working on farms, which will leave them short of labour. They're urging both sides to find a compromise, but there's no sign that either side will back down.

  • Farmers despair while politicians bicker over backpacker tax
Farmers say they are devastated about the stalemate in Canberra on the backpacker tax. Fred Gattuso is an orchardist from Northern Victoria. The stone fruit farmer visited Parliament House earlier this week to try to convince politicians to come to a quick decision on the tax rate, and he's despairing that no one in Canberra can compromise.

  • Trump yet to make several key appointments in first Cabinet
The world is watching in fascination as Donald Trump works his way through the appointments he'll need to form his first Cabinet as President of the United States. Alarm bells rang when one of his first key appointments was Steve Bannon, publisher of a news site which has carried racist, xenophobic, sexist and anti-Semitic articles - he's Mr Trump's chief strategist. Other appointments have been slightly less controversial, but some key positions are still in play.

  • Call for compulsory 'porn literacy' lessons for children as young as eight
It's every responsible parent's fear - that hardcore pornography is just a Google search away for any child with access to an unprotected computer or mobile device. And digitally-savvy kids are all too often a step ahead of parents when it comes to accessing what's available in the online world. But now new research lends support to the argument that it's not enough to try to throw up the barricades against internet porn. Rather it argues there should be compulsory sex education classes and lessons in in 'porn literacy skills' for children as young as eight to prepare them for the impact of the kind of material they could stumble across.
