  • RN staff pass motion of no confidence in senior ABC management
Radio National staff have passed a motion of no confidence in senior ABC management. The ABC plans to axe up to seven jobs at Radio National in the new year, as part of major changes to the station's programming. At a meeting this afternoon, staff unanimously passed a motion accusing management of breaching the ABC Charter, and failing to properly consult staff. Some staff have expressed a concern the station is being dismantled.

  • Cambodian Government labels commercial surrogacy 'human trafficking'
The Cambodian Government is refusing to give out birth certificates for babies born on behalf of Australian clients, saying commercial surrogacy is a form of human trafficking. Commercial surrogacy is banned in Australia, and when Thailand shut down it's industry last year, desperate Australians looked to Cambodia and other places for babies. But the arrest of an Australian nurse last week means uncertainty for the estimated 70 surrogacy cases already underway.

  • ICAC overhaul undermines community confidence
Senior legal figures have raised concerns about the independence of Australia's oldest corruption agency, after the resignation of the commissioner Megan Latham. Former New South Wales director of public prosecutions, Nicholas Cowdery, says by overhauling the agency, the Government has undermined community confidence in the ability of ICAC to do its job properly. He also says the integrity of unfinished investigations will suffer.

  • MP speaks up about her experience of domestic violence
MPs wore white ribbons in their lapels at Parliament House today, and there were speeches from the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader in the lead-up to White Ribbon Day on Friday. The most moving contribution though came from one Member of the Parliament, who spoke through tears of her own experience growing up with a violent father. The Labor MP from western Sydney, Emma Husar, says for many years she was embarrassed and ashamed - but now she's speaking up in the hope of helping others.

  • Gravity signal could lead to faster earthquake warning systems
Predicting earthquakes may be impossible, but scientists say they may have discovered a much faster way to detect earthquakes than is currently possible. Writing in the journal Nature Communications, a group of French researchers say the method involves detecting changes in the earth's gravity, which occurs during a quake.

  • Too early to 'rest easy' after another huge Japanese earthquake: expert
While the initial tsunami danger may have passed, experts say it's too early to rule out the possibility of more to come off the northern coast of Japan. A powerful magnitude 6.9 earthquake rocked northern Japan this morning off the coast of Fukushima. It's affected the same area - on the northern Pacific coast - devastated by a massive quake, tsunami and nuclear disaster in 2011. A tsunami of up to one metre was reported around Fukushima immediately following the quake, while the public broadcaster NHK says there have been warning of waves of up to three metres.

  • NSW Govt accused of forcing out ICAC Commissioner as payback
The New South Wales Government has been accused of forcing the state's chief anti-corruption official out of her job, as payback for investigating the Liberal Party. ICAC Commissioner Megan Latham has resigned from her post just days after State Parliament passed changes that meant she would have had to reapply for her job, even though her tenure hadn't expired. Investigations overseen by Commissioner Latham led 10 Liberal MPs to resign or go to the crossbench in 2014 over a donations scandal. Since then she's been dogged by criticism that ICAC overstepped the mark in its quashed pursuit of Crown Prosecutor Margaret Cunneen. Megan Latham's resignation is being viewed by many as the Government's revenge.

  • Government and Labor blame each other for worrying economic signs
Australia's economy is under strain, and the Government and Opposition have found a consensus of sorts about who to blame: each other. While the Government today is celebrating passing changes to superannuation that will save $3 billion, it says there's $20 billion worth of savings that still need to be passed. But Labor says Australia's Triple-A credit rating is at risk, and the Government's plans to lower tax rates for businesses won't help the budget bottom line. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister doubled-down in his support for Immigration Minister Peter Dutton, who's under fire for comments he's made about Lebanese Muslims living in Australia.
