  • Hazelwood to close in March
The owner of Victoria's Hazelwood power plant, Engie, is defending its decision to close the plant in Victoria's Latrobe Valley, saying it would've cost $400 million to revamp the station. Up to 1000 workers could lose their jobs, and they're being offered redundancy packages of $330,000.

  • Govts urged to provide financial advice for Hazelwood workers
Workers hit by major industrial shut-downs want governments to ensure financial advice is available to those facing unemployment at the Hazelwood power station. The Victorian coal-fired facility will shut by April next year, leaving about 750 employees facing an uncertain future. The Federal and State Governments have committed a combined $85 million to workers and the region. Experts are also calling for infrastructure projects to be accelerated to avoid people falling into unemployment.

  • ABC axes Catalyst program, announces 17 one-hour documentaries
It's the end of an era at the ABC, after the national broadcaster axed the Catalyst program today. All the familiar faces on the Catalyst, along with their producers, were told today that they were redundant. Management says it'll replace the weekly half hour science magazine with 17 one hour documentaries a year to be presented by leading scientists. Two Catalyst programs in recent years came under heavy fire - including from the ABC's own media watch - as alarmist, unprofessional and unbalanced. Emeritus Professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Sydney, Simon Chapman, speaks to PM.

World Football's governing body, FIFA, wants to stop British football players from honouring their war dead in an international game. FIFA's general secretary wants to make the point that Britain isn't the only country that suffered as a result of the war. But the Brits are having none of it, and Australia's Returned Services League says it sets a dangerous precedent.

  • Oppn pressuring Govt over former senator Bob Day's financial arrangements
The Opposition is continuing to pile pressure on the Government over former senator Bob Day's financial arrangements.
