  • Satellite images appear to support claims of targeted arson attacks in western Myanmar
Fresh satellite images appear to support claims of targeted arson attacks in western Myanmar, where security forces are accused of shooting and raping Muslims. • Confusion surrounds departure of Family First Senator Bob Day
Considerable confusion now surrounds the departure of the Family First Senator Bob Day. What was first reported as a resignation is now in question. Can he resign if he was never validly elected? • CSIRO researchers create artificially intelligent 'Nightmare Machine' for Halloween
Like it or not, the expression trick or treat is here to stay, and a bumper harvest of perfectly edible pumpkins are fit only as ornaments. It's Halloween, and if that doesn't give you goosebumps, perhaps this will. Researchers at the CSIRO have gotten into the spirit of the holiday by tapping into an idea that some people find increasingly frightening: the idea of artificial intelligence. The Nightmare Machine is an algorithm-based piece of artificial intelligence, or AI, that has been taught what images scare people. It has now learned how to produce such images itself, and its creators say it has the power to go even further.

  • Visa plan 'ludicrous', Shorten says
Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has accused the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull of being a puppet of One Nation by floating plans to permanently deny visas to refugees who've been settled in other countries if they tried to claim asylum in Australia. • Leaked documents show Star casino under-reporting violence
Sydney's Star casino has been accused of hiding the true extent of violence at its premises, with leaked documents showing two thirds of assaults on site are not reported to police. Liquor and Gaming New South Wales inspectors have conducted an in-depth review of incident reports and security footage at The Star Casino between March and August this year. The review, obtained exclusively by the ABC, found there were 111 violent incidents on site, but only 36 were reported to police. Advocates for victims of crime say that shows the casino should be subject to New South Wales controversial lockout laws.
