  • Thailand police ask Australian counterparts to track down critics of monarchy
Thailand is one of the last countries in the world to jail people for being rude about its royals, and it wants Australia to help arrest critics of its monarchy. Thai police say they've asked their Australian counterparts to track down people accused of lese majeste - a crime punishable by 15 years in prison. There's been a flurry of lese majeste cases in the last two weeks since the death of Thailand's revered king Bhumibol. Ultra-royalist groups have targeted a Sydney man for allegedly insulting comments and he was fired because of fear of vigilante attacks on the restaurant where he worked.

  • Indigenous teens in Kalgoorlie call for greater community support
In Kalgoorlie, two months after the death of a young Aboriginal man and a town riot, Aboriginal teenagers want more support in the community. They've told an ABC Background Briefing investigation about how easy it is to fall into trouble on the streets, and about being physically abused at home by parents on drugs. They're hoping the town will set up a drop-in centre so they have somewhere safe to go. But the Mayor of Kalgoorlie has risked inflaming the situation further. He told Background Briefing that anti-social problems were the result of bad parenting and added that each generation of Aboriginal people was worse than the last. The WA Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Peter Collier has refused to condemn the Mayor's remarks.

The latest civilian deaths in fighting in and around the besieged city of Aleppo in Syria has caused emotions to flare at a gathering of the United Nations Security Council. Overnight, 26 people were killed in airstrikes on a village in Idlib province, south-east of Aleppo. It's believed at least half of the victims were children. It's prompted a senior UN official to tell security council members he's 'incandescent with rage' at its ongoing failure to reach a resolution on how to end the violence.

  • Safety inspector says concerns about rides remained after initial report
Documents released to the ABC by Queensland Workplace health and safety reveal that a safety inspector raised concerns about some rides at Dreamworld four years ago and wasn't satisfied with how it was dealt with. • Experts criticise Dreamworld executives' priorities
The board of Dreamworld's parent company, Ardent Leisure, has been criticised by several experts for its handling of this week's tragedy. Four people lost their lives on the theme park's Thunder River Rapids ride just days ago. One expert has told PM it took two days for the CEO to make it to the site. There's also a perception the park - opening again on Saturday - is returning to business as usual far too quickly.
