The road to real estate can start in some unexpected places. Take the example of Elly McKenzie who joins SCOUT Real Estate Founder Jennifer Nelson on this episode of Pocket Hours. Elly has 8 years of experience as a broker but credits her background in banking and Occupational Therapy for paving the path of her success in real estate.
Elly has some valuable gems to share, including "Do what you love and the business will come" and "Your best next transaction is within the current transaction." And who can argue with "Done is better than perfect––always" ?
Her tips for success have to do with staying consistent with clients all the way through closing, making genuine connections, and showing up and staying present in an authentic way. She also shares how the Ninja Practice method has worked well for her over the years of building her business.
Success isn't just about following the right path — it's also about overcoming the challenges life lays in front of you on that path. Elly's ADHD has posed a challenge to her motivation, but, she says, it's also contributed to her success in her business. Staying motivated is key, so listen up for her life hacks on keeping your eyes on the prize.

Drew Smith is a managing partner at Urban Commercial Partners in Seattle, and he joins Jennifer Nelson, founder of SCOUT Real Estate, to share some very specific expertise.
A veteran in the real estate industry with 16 years of experience as a "dirt dog," Drew focuses on finding underutilized space ripe for new construction all over the city of Seattle.
Drew explains that he works with a wide variety of clients, but he is able to use the same skillset across these projects. To be successful with development opportunities, he has to stay flexible and go where the market dictates. Another challenge within his space is that the timeline of deals he works on can span over a few years, and he has to stay present with clients over the whole deal. It's a job that takes a lot of patience, especially since he doesn't get paid until the end!
In this episode, Drew shares some practical tips that have contributed to his success, how he manages the challenges he faces, the timeline of how development deals might go, and the different ways he finds the leads for the deals he works on.
Drew also welcomes new partnerships, so if you have a possible opportunity with underutilized space, he would love to hear from you!

Jennifer Nelson, Scout Real Estate Founder, welcomes Renee Bornfreund who is a Broker, Investor, and Senior Real Estate Specialist (SRES). Renee and Jennifer discuss the importance of relationships and finding your champions. And Renee shares how her background in the corporate arena gave her skills that are directly transferable to the industry of real estate.
Renee explains that in her corporate job, she was a consultant, trainer, and project manager. All of these roles and the skills that went with them are the same skills she uses as a successful agent and SRES now. She also gives specifics on how she manages her day-to-day with systems, templates, and lists.
On the relationship side, Renee embodies Jennfer's mantra of "be the agent you would hire". In her own experience with her mom, she wished for more empathy, direction to resources, and support/understanding of expectations from the agent. Since this experience left a lot to be desired, Renee found her niche in helping seniors and their families transition out of a family home when they need to downsize, make a long distance move, or figure out where to go next.
Renee emphasizes the champions within her business, the circle of people that she knows she can trust to support her clients with other pieces of the process. Building up these relationships to fully support the senior community has transferred to success for herself, her champions, and her clients.

Scout Real Estate Founder Jennifer Nelson welcomes Albert Clark today on Pocket Hours. Albert is a 19-year veteran of the real estate industry and owner of Real Residential, a new venture into business ownership.
Albert's background includes years of corporate HR experience as well as time as a mortgage broker. He was drawn to real estate while working as a mortgage broker because he saw agents that weren't giving their clients the best experience. He knew he could do better.
In this episode, Jennifer and Albert talk about staying consistent and trusting what you know how to do. They agree that it's important to keep an even keel regardless of the stormy seas the market can sometimes be. No matter what the market is doing, Albert knows to stay in the "now" and stay focused on what he does well. He also shares how he stays motivated in the day-to-day and how important it has been to his business to not get discouraged by the ups and downs.

Today, Jennifer Nelson, founder of Scout Real Estate, welcomes Candace Juarez, owner of Oak and Stone Realty Group in Grays Harbor County, Washington.
Candace has been in the real estate industry for over 20 years and still absolutely loves what she does. She worked for three different firms before following her dream of opening her own company, so she knows the business from every angle.
Candace advises newbies to do your research, know your forms, take classes from MLS, and do everything you can to educate yourself. The more you can round out your knowledge, she says, the better you can help your clients in any situation that arises.
Candace also shares that her path to success includes getting involved in her community, using social media to remind people what she does and help them get to know her, and setting tangible micro-goals to set the stage for a successful week. All of these strategies have helped her make connections with people and build her business.

In this episode of Pocket Hours, Scout Real Estate Founder Jennifer Nelson talks to April Geneva. A veteran in the real estate industry, April has been helping people into their dream homes since her 20s and has been with Windermere for 26 years.
April reflects on her path to success by telling listeners how she used her background in hospitality to tap into skills she needed to become successful. She also recalls her hours of "sitting floor time" and saying "yes" to many, many open houses at the start of her career. And finally, working with relocation companies helped her build up her business.
Jennifer and April agree that becoming successful comes along with focusing on relationships — ALL relationships, not just with clients — and building your business, even if it means taking a little bit less (relocation companies) or doing the grunt work (endless open houses). Showing up for yourself, your clients, and your colleagues is an important mindset.

In this episode, Scout Real Estate founder and real estate veteran Jennifer Nelson interviews Kamila Kennedy, who is more of a "newbie" in the industry. Kamila shares her four-and-a-half-year journey of pivoting from *many* other jobs into becoming her own boss as a real estate agent. She attributes her success to watching and listening to her mentors in all areas of her life, building trust with her clients, and treating real estate as a job — not a hobby.
When starting out, the first thing Kamila did was pick the brains of more seasoned agents she knew. She listened when they told her how hard it was to become successful and that just loving homes was not the important part of finding success as an agent.
Kamila worked through imposter syndrome and self-doubt and learned that earning her clients' trust was perhaps even more important than years of experience. She discovered that admitting to clients, "I don't know, but I can find out!" actually built trust rather than undermining her credibility. And she followed through, tapping into her network of mentors to learn more and answer client questions.
Kamila shares many practical tips for other agents who may be a little newer to the industry and shares what helped her the most when she was at the beginning.

Scout Real Estate Founder Jennifer Nelson talks with another veteran of the industry today. Julie Beall has been in the industry for over 20 years! If she could give advice to herself 20 years ago, she would love to tell her newbie self to "be smarter — work harder". But, she says, she knows that then-Julie really didn't have the knowledge and experience to take now-Julie's advice.
And what would she change if she could? Is there such a thing as "wasted time," or is it all leading to something? Julie attributes her true success to the years 2007 and 2008 when she had enough experience to know it was a time to pivot. While her endeavors in consulting on energy audits didn't pan out, taking that time to further her education still made her a better agent.
In this episode, Julie and Jennifer chat about what makes success happen: spoiler alert — it isn't just having your license. Julie talks about being proactive and less reactive to the market. And they both advise that if you want to up your game – you have to WORK and work hard! Find ways to get your clients to love you, says Julie; learn how to take advantage of what the market is already doing, and you're most of the way there.

After years of both corporate deal-making and being self-employed, they have found their groove building and growing their real estate business together.
Emily talks with Jennifer about how strengths from her background — including her ability to listen, help clients feel heard, giving people a safe space to share, and building a network through the connections she makes with people — continue to serve her in this business.
Eric shares how important it is to talk about what you do since people in your own circle may be some of the best connections to grow your business. Additionally, his background has really helped with the processes and systems involved in building and maintaining a small business.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Eric and Emily share what to consider when forming a team and how to make the most of a partnership.

Scout Real Estate founder Jennifer Nelson chats with a top broker and one of her own personal heroes, Scott Monroe. He is truly a pleasure to listen to – with many mottos and his piano playing at the end, don't miss this episode!
Scott admits that his background in construction gives an "unfair" advantage to showing up for his clients in unexpected ways. He's been known to install an outlet, finish a fence, and answer his phone when his client should have been calling 911 instead of him! But for Scott – it is all about the relationships he builds and genuinely enjoying the people he meets.
Scott has been in the industry for over 30 years, and he shares a lot of advice, knowledge, and experiences in this episode with Jennifer. Grab a pen to take some notes and enjoy this great conversation with Scott and Jennifer!
Some of Scott's Mottos:
"You'll never wonder what I think because I'll tell ya!"
"A lot of people are able to do good work, but you gotta make 'em do it."
"Let them accuse you of everything but lack of effort"
"There's nothing I"m above doing anything in real estate"
