  • Episode 17: Balance & Gratitude with Dr. Sierra Storm

There's a lot to learn inside the realty industry, but there's also a lot of value to be gained outside as well! In this episode, Scout Real Estate founder Jennifer Nelson invited Dr. Sierra Storm to Pocket Hours, to be our special "outside-the-industry" guest this year.

Dr. Storm didn't learn to run a business in medical school. Today she shares a little bit about who she is, and a lot about how she found success with The Rise Collective in Seattle. Her success has come from setting goals that align with her values.

Dr. Storm only made 9 cents in her first year of practice and now feels like she is living her dream life! The secret to her success includes:

    • Gratitude practice — spending time on what is going right (no matter how small)
    • Scripting the best possible version of her day, week, or year
    • Having the right mindset
    • Balancing rest, rejuvenation, travel, and fun time with being her best self when she is with her patients.

Learn more about Dr. Sierra Storm and her partners in practice at https://www.risecollectiveseattle.com/. And learn more about Jennifer at Scout Real Estate.

  • Episode 16: How Can I Contribute?

In this conversation with Scout Real Estate founder Jennifer Nelson, realtor Javila Creer reflects on her career path (and her enormous success, though she's too humble to say that). One big piece of her success is she frequently asks herself the question, "How can I contribute to my clients' lives?"

Yes, helping them buy or sell a house is a big contribution. But Javila's commitment to her clients goes far beyond real estate.

She's fascinated by the process, both for the learning AND for the benefit to the client. Stay curious, she advises, and try to understand the client's perspective. "Be a grounding tool for their big emotions," she says, so you can stay calm and be of value to them when they're ready to think things through.

Be generous with your time. This may seem super hard; our time is often our most precious resource. But it's a great way to move towards big success and satisfaction for clients.

  • Episode 13: Education and Ethics in Realty

Kelley Meister and Amie Stewart of Meister Stewart Partners rank in the top 0.5% of realtors in Washington state. Joining forces after each had been in different careers and then had switched tracks to real estate, "really helped our business thrive."

In this conversation with Scout's Jennifer Nelson, they discuss how leveraging their individual strengths allowed them to not only build the business but also be less fearful about taking chances and going after big listings. They showed up for each other as least as much as they showed up for themselves, and it worked.

One great tip: Perception is critical in this business, so they keep up with weekly Tour Days, checking out local listings and making sure their cards are visible everywhere. Not only does this keep their name on top, they also see what others are doing to inform changes they might want to make to listings, and they are able to speak knowledgeably about the local listings.

Partnership is like a marriage, so if you're considering partnering, be sure you know you're a good match. Shared values, shared work ethic, and the ability to distinguish individual strengths and interests and merge them are critical.

  • Episode 12: Focusing on What Gives You Joy

Sarah Georger Clark is in the top 0.5% of realtors in Washington State, and the fact that she was completely unaware of that says a lot about her. As Jennifer says, realtors like Sarah are so busy delighting clients, they really don't even think about their rankings.

Despite truly being a master in her profession, Sarah says she doesn't "walk around feeling like I'm a master at this." Instead, she focuses on things that make her happy in her personal life and weaves it into her professional life — good restaurants, new-mom life, etc. — and the referrals come from those interests and hobbies.

  • Episode 11: How a Creative Director Can Give a Broker a Moment of Zen

Does your brokerage support you with graphics and design templates and marketing? If not, why not?

In this episode, Scout Real Estate founder Jennifer Nelson talks with Creative Director Farley Bookout about the kinds of support a creative director can provide you. If you're not currently getting this kind of support, have a listen and get some ideas!

Farley's work history is so unique, including washing a diary from Abraham Lincoln in the bathtub, so how did she end up in real estate?

She loves helping realtors and brokers find some Zen — buying and selling can be a stressful job, but she helps them stay organized, provides marketing templates that are simple to use, and generally takes things off brokers' heaping plates of to-dos.

  • Episode 10: Real Estate — So Much More Than Sales

Success in real estate involves so much more than selling. It's people management, it's PR and marketing, it's All The Things and more, and doing it part-time … probably doesn't actually exist.

Connie Sorensen has been in the Real Estate arena for a couple of decades, and she knows what it's like to go from burning the midnight oil to kickstarting with the early-AM coffee, with not much sleep between!

How do you do it? How do you spend more hours than the day actually has doing the job? "Delegate," says Connie. Learning to delegate and trust her team and her systems has meant her business can continue to grow.

Don't do the things you're not so good at or invested in learning to do well, Connie says. Hire someone who is and then focus on the things you love — or risk burning out. Hire and support your team, and let them do the things they excel at.

There are so many great nuggets of information in this conversation between Scout Real Estate Founder and Pocket Hours host Jennifer Nelson and guest Connie Sorensen. Listen in, then find Connie at https://www.vashonislandliving.com/ and Jennifer at https://scoutrealestate.com/.

  • Episode 9: Change Something

You'll learn a lot in this conversation with Aaron Janus, including what an axolotl is. (spoiler: it's a salamander)

You'll also get some key advice, like know your path forward, even if you're just setting out. And don't reinvent the wheel; do what others who do it well do. Consider getting a coach early in the game to hit the fast track to success. Change and refresh to keep moving forward.

Listen to this conversation with Jennifer Nelson, founder of Scout Real Estate, as they sort out the best tips to personal growth and business success.

Aaron is the Managing Broker of the JanusGroup at RE/MAX Integrity, a tight knit collaborative team of real estate professionals whose mission it is to help their clients realize their house goals with expertise + heart.

Their team provides a transparent, compassionate, and dare we say fun experience for buyers, sellers and investors of residential real estate across the Seattle area.

Aaron has been in the business for 17 years. When he's not real-estating, he loves to spend time dadding with two boys, 10 and 13, traveling, enjoying nature, and collecting Narwhals (which are the unicorn of the sea, you know).

Aaron has been in Seattle since 1996, which pretty much makes him a native. He holds a BA in Business Administration with a focus in Entrepreneurship from the Foster Business School at the University of Washington. Currently, Aaron lives in the Fauntleroy neighborhood of West Seattle.

  • Episode 8: Hitting It Out of the Park with Danny Meier

Danny Meier of Academy Mortgage juggles two young kids (not physically, obviously) and a very busy real estate career. Despite the many challenges, he manages to stay on top of changes in the industry (even if he's not entirely certain if he's been married 8 years or 9).

How is it possible to do that and maintain any sort of balance in life?

A career in baseball — that meant having several other jobs to make ends meet — prepared Danny for hard work. And the combination of sales, finance, and communication needed to be successful in real estate really interested Danny and played to his strengths.

In this conversation with Jennifer Nelson, founder of Scout Real Estate, you'll hear his thoughts on what qualifies someone as a "good" or "productive" lender and how he reaches the frankly startling numbers he achieves.
