  • #7. Non-Profit Dog Rescue Spawned a Successful Business with Kiah Hagen

Kiah is the founder and director of Pacific Pups Rescue in Los Angeles, and the co-founder and CEO of Pacific Pups Products. Kiah started her non-profit animal rescue in 2016 with the goal of rescuing the dogs and cats who were being overlooked in the high-kill shelters of Los Angeles. She wanted to help the dogs that most others were leaving behind. She and her fiance were funding it from their own pockets when a friend and fellow Amazon seller suggested they make a product to sell on Amazon in order to support the rescue. She launched Pacific Pups Products in 2017. That initial product was almost immediately successful, and she realized there was potential on Amazon to help fund her efforts to rescue more animals. Pacific Pups Products is now a well-established brand that completely funds Pacific Pups Rescue. Every purchase made is directly helping to save a life. Safety comes first, so all of the toys are made from safe & non-toxic materials, and all pass the ASTM F-963 Children’s Toy Safety Standards test. All of the toys are put through the wringer with our rescue dogs, to make sure they are durable enough for heavy chewers. The rescue has been able to save almost 700 animals to date, thanks to the support from the e-commerce business.

In this episode, we talk about the difference between a shelter and a rescue. The necessity of having a 501(c)(3) status. And how starting a business that promotes a philanthropic endeavor can help in its success. She shares how rescue organizations can not function without the help from foster families.

  • #5. Pilates and Pro-Aging with Nikki Adams

Nikki has been teaching Pilates for over 14 years now. A Southern California native, she recently moved to Northern California after spending 10 years living in Seattle, WA. During her time in Washington, she owned & operated (4) Pilates studios. Her original studio was a labor of love called Intimate Pilates, the other (3) were part of the Club Pilates Franchise. She was the Grand Prize Winner for the 2014 Club Pilates Franchise Giveaway and was selected over 47 other participants nationwide. After years of dipping her toes into the Pilates Franchise business model, she decided to go back to her original roots of working with smaller group classes in a more intimate setting. She is excited to safely help clients dive deeper & further strengthen their Pilates Practice with the new freedom to teach the entire Pilates repertoire.

In addition to her Pilates Certifications, she has taken an extensive amount of Continuing Education Workshops to keep her Pilates & Fitness Knowledge current with industry standards & trends. Including a 15-hour apprenticeship program with Shane Belau of Bodycenter Studios (LMP STOTT PILATES® Master Instructor Trainer) covering topics not found in textbooks, she gained a more in-depth understanding of injury-related conditions such as hip/knee replacement, lumbar disc injuries, breast cancer rehab, and more.

She was also a Pilates Master Trainer/Educator for Club Pilates for 5 years. In addition to training her own staff, she traveled around the United States to various Club Pilates locations to lead teacher training. She eventually resigned from this position as it no longer aligned with her core beliefs.

Prior to becoming a Pilates Instructor, she had a 20-year career in the Aerospace Industry. She left that career at the age of 40 to pursue her path of teaching Pilates full-time.  For a short time, she was juggling both. She attended all the Pilates training while working a full-time job & having a newborn.

Berry bushes can be found in her yard and flowers are scattered throughout. Michelle recently began learning how to preserve her family's food and bakes fresh sourdough each week. She and he husband are on the hunt for some land to expand their horizons. Michelle lives in Florence, SC with her husband, Chris, and their empty nest is no longer as their son moved home to save money to buy a house. • #1. Nutrition, health, well-being, and healthy habits with Melissa Yamashita

Discussing the role of Nutrition in overall health, well-being, healthy habits, and more with Melissa Yamashita. A 52-year-old wife, mother of 2 boys, 2 dogs, and full-time High School Spanish teacher. She started exercising consistently about 15 years ago when her older son was a toddler. At the time working out had become her social event and escape. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutritional Science from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in California but was not super motivated to be a registered dietitian since that job involved working mainly in hospitals which didn't exactly excite her.

Food and how it has such a powerful impact on one's overall health: emotionally,  physically, and mentally is exciting. She did a lot of traveling which opened her eyes and heart to different cultures and languages and ultimately she became a Spanish teacher. In the 25 years that she's been teaching, she's also been exercising at various levels and has cycled through many different ways of eating (vegetarianism, veganism, etc). Now she has a way that works for her and has recently received a certification as a Nutrition Coach with the hopes of eventually focusing on menopausal women/athletes to help them achieve their goals.
