Jabraan is a professor at the University of Oklahoma School of Community Medicine, a lecturer on implicit bias, having led over 100 workshops over the topic across the world; as well as the host of Lean In With Dr. Jabraan Pasha podcast. We discuss how the brain works, what implicit bias means, and how to ignore the guilt and look past it. He also tells what needs to happen to make sure there are more black doctors in the future.

  • Anneliese Bruner, White Primacy, and Telling the Whole Story

    Chris and Jesse are joined by Anneliese Bruner. Anneliese is the great granddaughter of Mary E. Jones Parrish, a survivor of the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921. Bruner’s great grandmother wrote an account of what she and others experienced during this devastating time in Tulsa, and her writings have been passed down through generations, and into Bruner’s hands. In our conversation, Bruner discussed her level of shock when she was given the book by her father, and she discusses her first experience in Tulsa during the centennial commemoration of Tulsa Race Massacre. We also discuss the importance of primary document historical research, and how the severity of the massacre has been white washed over the years.

Our city and country have just exited a week of remembrance and commemoration, as it was the centennial of the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921. Mike joins us to discuss the impact this massacre has had on our city and how we are all still affected by it. Mike also gives us insight into his education and upbringing, and how he got his spot at The Black Wall Street Times. We also discuss what it means to be a racist today, where we think those tendencies come from, and how radicalizers affect these people.

    Chris and Jesse are joined by Carlos Moreno, Co-Captain of Code for Tulsa and author of The Victory of Greenwood. Moreno recently finished writing The Victory of Greenwood and it is now available for pre-order. Moreno discusses the parallels between the historic race massacres in Greenwood in 1921 and Chicago in 1919 with the eruptions of racial unrest in Minneapolis, Portland, and right here in Tulsa over the past few years. We also discuss generational trauma within minorities, and how it can affect racial issues in America today. But most importantly we talk about the victories that have taken place both before 1921, after 1921, and right now. Moreno also brings light to hidden figures, like Jake Simmons Jr., who brought Philips petroleum to Africa.

    Chris and Jesse are joined by Amy Curren, the Executive Director of the Oklahoma chapter of Generation Citizen, which is a program center around action civics and civics education. In this episode, we discuss the importance of educating young people on how to participate in a democracy, and why it is essential that their voices are being used to be heard. While Curren works for the Oklahoma chapter of Generation Citizen, she is adamant about their work in civics showing results on a more universal scale. She expressed her desire for Oklahoma to be a hub for conferences where teachers can come for social studies professional development. Curren urges adults and students to expect more out of their local schools’ civics education in hopes that it will improve on a larger-than-local scale.
