Pod Casty For Me episodes

  • Ep. 27: White Hunter, Black Heart (1990)

It's the ugliest godd*mn podcast you've ever seen, back again for another episode. We are pleased as punch to be talking about Clint Eastwood's 1990 adaptation WHITE HUNTER, BLACK HEART, a thinly-disguised account of the production of John Huston's THE AFRICAN QUEEN. A very good movie about a just-OK movie, we both agree! Join us for a chat about the sort of Larger-Than-Life white men like Huston and Hemingway that we used to be impressed by and now find tiresome, Hollywood depictions of Africa, performative anti-semitism, and King of the Film Timothy Spall. Please join us! Please!!!

Topics include: hate crimes, good and bad John Huston impressions, helicopter piloting, shots fired at Cate Blanchett, Jeff Fahey, George Dzundza, Peter Vertiel, the very ugly dissolution of Eastwood's relationship with Sondra Locke, reusing boats, the late Mann National Theater in Westwood, and more!

Beep beep! What's that we've got stashed in our trunk? Look at that, it's a brand new episode on Buddy Van Horn's 1989 action comedy PINK CADILLAC, and with our friend Eric Markovits, no less! Hop on in for a discussion of Bernadette Peters, a whirlwind history of white supremacist groups in the 80s, MIDNIGHT RUN (again), Ian's exciting new segment, and a return to the Pine Cone Crime Zone. Check it out!

Topics include: the mostly unrelated Bruce Springsteen song of the same name, James Cromwell, Frances Fisher, French nobility, British Israelism, Neo-Nazis on film, prison abolition talk, skiptracers, bounty hunters, whether those are the same type of guy, and more!

  • Ep. 24: The Dead Pool (1988) with Jesse Thorn

Opinions are like podcasts: everybody's got one. Pretty good reference to the film, if you ask me. We're diving in to Buddy Van Horn's 1988 finale to the Dirty Harry series, THE DEAD POOL, with podcasting's #2 expert on late '80s San Francisco, Jesse Thorn! He's also the host of NPR's Bullseye and the podcast Jordan Jesse Go, and the founder of Maximum Fun, now a worker-owned cooperative. We get into the San Francisco of the movies, the unaddressed trauma all around Harry Callahan, and talk with Jesse about the process of transitioning his podcast network to a co-op. Real proud of this one, gang. Please check it out!

Topics include: whale watching, an appreciation of Blaine Capatch, working with people who've worked with Mr. Eastwood, Liam Neeson's silly accent, Denmark, Jim Carrey, spoilers for MICHAEL CLAYTON, relatedly Jake gets in trouble for still not having seen ANDOR, ventriloquist dummy and SFPD officer Brendan O'Smarty, DARKMAN, celebrity death pools, Deadpool (the Ryan Reynolds one), THE POPE'S EXORCIST, Jesse's decision to transition the Maximum Fun podcast network to an employee-owned cooperative, and the 2011 GQ profile of Rick Ross.

  • Ep. 23: Heartbreak Ridge (1986) with Laurie R. Lambert

Look alive, ladies (complimentary)! Today we're digging into Clint Eastwood's 1986 war...comedy(?) HEARTBREAK RIDGE with Laurie R. Lambert, associate professor of African and African American Studies at Fordham University and author of the book Comrade Sister: Caribbean Feminist Revisions of the Grenada Revolution. We talk about the film's extremely casual engagement with the facts of the 1983 American invasion of Grenada, consider its failure as a satire, if that's even what it's trying to do, and heap a lot of praise on Damani Baker's excellent documentary THE HOUSE ON COCO ROAD. Check it out!

Topics include: whether this is Clint doing STRIPES, misogyny and homophobia as essential parts of masculinity, reference points for the population and size of Grenada, favorite plants, Cuba's foreign policy both real and imagined, Mario Van Peebles, relatedly JAWS: THE REVENGE, and more!

  • Ep. 22: "Vanessa in the Garden" (1985)

[update: fixed an audio issue] It's the episode you've all been begging for: by popular demand, we're covering "Vanessa in the Garden," the 22-minute episode of Steven Spielberg's Amazing Stories anthology television series directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Sondra Locke! Join us as we fully break down mentally trying to squeeze a drop of blood from this stone. This audio will probably be entered into a court case as evidence someday, so listen now while it's still cool and underground!!

Topics include: Steven Spielberg, Errol morris's MR. DEATH, Harvey Keitel, Beau Bridges, anthology television, Jake's distaste for UCLA basketball coach John Wooden, the sexual politics of the "muse," somehow the unmade Roger Rabbit sequel/prequel where he fights in World War II, and more!

  • Ep. 21: Pale Rider (1985)

Behold a couple of pale guys doing a podcast! Today we're breaking down Eastwood's 1985 oater PALE RIDER, his riff on SHANE if the little boy was a teenage girl and the cows were gold. There's a lot of SHANE talk, obviously, plus a deep dive into the history of hydraulic mining, the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and more! Good episode, if you ask me. Check it out.

  • Ep. 20: City Heat (1984) with Forrest Tiffany

Two movie stars...three guys chatting...one episode!! We're joined once again by our friend Forrest Tiffany for a discussion of CITY HEAT, Richard Benjamin's 1984 period buddy cop movie in which Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds don't exactly make sparks fly. Well, Ian liked it. We do some Burt context, talk about the history of Kansas City political machines, and there's a silly little game. Check it out!

  • Ep. 19: Tightrope (1984) with Hit Factory

They say a podcast must choose between being funny and being insightful. They're wrong! On today's hugely fun episode, we're joined by Aaron and Carlee from the terrific Hit Factory podcast to talk Richard Tuggle's 1984 sleazy serial killer thriller TIGHTROPE - with all the dog rescue stories, sex worker rights history, and do-cops-deserve-empathy conversations you can handle. Plus the three dudes talk about how good Carlee is at posting! She's so good at it. We had a stupid amount of fun recording this episode and we think you will have at least some portion of that listening to it. As a reminder, the podcast is free.

  • Ep. 18: Sudden Impact (1983) with Dr. Joe Street

Go ahead, listen to this episode! We are beyond thrilled to be joined for our discussion of the fourth Dirty Harry film, SUDDEN IMPACT, by the man who literally wrote the book on Dirty Harry: Dr. Joe Street, author of Dirty Harry's America: Clint Eastwood, Harry Callahan, and the Conservative Backlash. From "Make my day" to Santa Cruz history to Reagan's cruel legacy of spending cuts to Sondra Locke's sunglasses, we cover it all on this one, folks. There's even a novelty song and a farfetched theory about an androgynous bulldog that probably should have been cut out of the episode. But we left it in for you, the listener, whom we love and cherish! Please give this one a listen, it was a wonderful discussion and we're excited to share it with you. [There are some minor audio issues that we did our best to clean up, so be nice to us about it.]
