ASX recovers to close only 38 points down at 7465. It was the best of time and the worst of times. Miners were savaged with the iron ore price adding to BHP woes and commodities generally under pressure. RIO dropped 5.7%, FMG down 6.2% and MIN falling 6.6%. The big Aussie may be regretting its transformation after falling another 6.3%. Industrials and results stole the show and tried valiantly to rescue the index but failed. BHP accounted for 28 index points alone. Banks held the line with the Big Bank Basket dropping to $180.91. CSL rose 3.2% after brokers pronounced judgement. Defensives rose led by WES up 1.7%, BXB up 1.4% and JHX gaining 2.0%. Reports dominated with RBL inflating by 19.0% after an early loss. WSA confirmed media reports that IGO were interested, running 13.0%.

European markets expected to open around 1% weaker.

Another busy busy day as we try and keep up with results. DMP, CSL, BHP, WPL and PME written up today. We talk about the pandemic risk - rather than get over it we may just be about to run into it again. Tapering talk. Iron ore stocks and what to do - is this the big top or a small top. Doesn't matter, we've gone "Neutral" on RIO and probably will on RIO and FMG after their dividends. Bitcoin. What employers can do about vaccination dodgers and a look at what happened on this day in history. Women got the vote and Butch Cassidy formed the Wild Bunch.

  • Marcus Today End of Day Report -Wednesday 18th August

ASX 200 put in a good day to day despite NSW CV19 cases, despite US weakness and BHP falls. The ASX 200 fell 9 points to 7502 (0.1). BHP alone accounted for 33 negative points. It was all about results. In general, they were positive. Brokers pronounced sentence on a few with 'ho humness' following yesterdays drop with BRG continuing lower, MFG also under pressure but DMP delivered up 7.1%, PGH rose 8.3%, PME another doing well up 15.7% and a delisting for RDC saw them soar 18.1%. The banks saved the day with CBA up 0.8% and WBC up 1.4%. MQG joined in the fun, buoyed by the BHP news, the big miner though fell 7.1% as the arbitrageurs were unleashed, and the PLC discount started to close. RIO fell 2.3% in sympathy, it too has a dual listed non fungible structure which may see some call for a change to the structure. Industrials also did well, TLS up 1.0%, WOW up 0.8% and ALL doing ‘nicely nicely’. CSL struggled on traffic and margin issues and some weaker guidance falling 1.5%.

Today we look at the big news from BHP - dual listing gone, oil and gas assets gone. Becoming an ESG sympathetic company - taking the Corporate lead. 30 results today. Henry and I pick three results from yesterday to write up. Four tomorrow. Case numbers explode and the equity market doesn't care - it doesn't care about much whilst the money flows. Chasing our tails for the next couple of weeks. Overbought but no sign of a top.

ASX 200 slides 72 points to 7511 (0.9%) as results drop thick and fast. Seems some disappointment emerging on outlook statements and cost pressures perhaps. The Big Bank Basket fell hard today as CBA went Ex-Dividend, the basket dropped to $180.32. Other financials also on the nose as MFG collapsed 10.2% on a lack of performance fees. Miners were also on the nose as BHP fell 1.4% ahead of its results after hours and more news on the potential WPL deal with the energy company dropping 2.1%.  Healthcare better with CSL up  0.2% in a late flurry with the rest of the sector looking ok. Tech stocks weakened and high valuation stocks flew too close to the sun, and we saw some wax melting in the likes of AXE, crashing 21.7% and lithium stocks a little depressed. In corporate news, BRG boiled over falling 9.0%, LYC hit by Malaysian concerns, down 7.6% and GWA saw some downgrades falling 8.00%.

The market is getting a bloody nose today as results don't impress, the CBA is ex-dividend and ex-entitlement to the buyback, lockdowns weigh, Resources dip as China is doubted, Kabul is a disaster, Defensive stocks doing well (not a great sign),  the RBA are predictable and the Big Shorter shorts ARK and Tesla putting his money where his mouth is and his mouth suggests Meme stocks and other equities are in the Mother of all Bubbles.  We add a few "Signs of the Top" and add a new section.  AXE drops 19.5% and HENRY explains.
