PRODUCTION WORKFLOW: (spoiler, this may drive some editors crazy!)

I’m focused on having as many of these conversations as possible, not in having the audio quality be perfect. Thus, I’m going with a workflow that is minimal but effective. If this annoys your editor ears, I get it, but you might want to skip listening. Thanks!

-Record on Streamyard on one track while streaming to YouTube

-Lightly content edit the video, export as MP4 and WAV

-Lightly sound clean up the WAV in Hindenburg (voice profiler, compressor, noise reductions and check the overall level), export as MP3

I’m experimenting with different video to audio workflows this month and think that handling the video first THEN sweetening the audio seems to be the most streamlined and logical.

Dave Visaya lives and podcast edits from the Philippines. Now his production company, Podcast Engineers, handles 100+ podcasts but when he first started there were some potential clients who wanted to talk him down to a super low rate probably based on of his location. And this brings up an interesting question:

How much of our rates should be/can be/are based on where we live? And more so, if that fair?

We need to play with our editing tools more than we do. Mistakes are good. Here’s how I figured out how to do the video effect I used in yesterday’s video in Reaper. Yes, there’s a lot of visual DAW play in this episode. It might not translate well as a podcast. This might be a ploy to get you to subscribe to our YouTube channel. I can’t say, wah ha ha.

And you notice things you could do to help their podcast but they’re timely and you don’t want to keep pushing new services often. You just negotiated their package so it feels too soon to add anything else. But you want to help their podcast.

How can you protect your business (or freelance income) AND not come across as service pushy?

Asking for a friend. Or for myself. Or both.

How do I find podcast editing clients?

I get asked this a lot. And although I’m no expert at any of this, I’ve had some success attracting the right kind of clients for me so far. But I’m loud, have been super active in many online podcast communities for years (including the one I run, #PodRevDay) and write about podcasting. I'm an extrovert and am visible in many spaces and this all helps. A lot.

But you’re not me. It’s important to find clients in a way that’s comfortable and sustainable for you. Map your client search to your personality and habits. I think that’s a good method to use because it gives you room to be you while being businessy you. Which is good, right?
