There are a variety of podcast platforms available for shows to be found on and podcasters to submit to, but not all are created equal. They are all have certain features and quirks, Todd and Mike get into some pros and cons of the major directories currently available and relevant.

Spotify is testing listener polls in their app.

Podcast Movement announced another keynote speaker, Mark Cuban.

Zoom releasing is new soundboard designed for podcasting. Looks similar to the RODEcaster Pro. They will be available mid November.

Spotify employees say they will strike if Joe Rogan’s episodes are not edited or removed.

Charlotte Podcast Festival is October 5-30th, they'll have free sessions all month.

Best Practice:

What podcast apps do you want your podcast listed in? 

You can choose what apps you want your podcast to be distributed to. You don’t need to be listed in all the major players. Why would you NOT want to be in a particular app? 

Most of your potential listeners do not use that app, for example, a linux podcast may not need to be in Apple Podcasts although it doesn’t hurt anything. Or a podcast specifically about Apple Products, likely wouldn’t do well on Google Podcasts.

The directory/app does things you don’t agree with, for example, they put ads in or around your episodes.

The app does not attribute the show to you and makes it seem like they own your show.

Terms of service, for example, some apps say you can’t say something bad about their company. Or you can’t talk about xx topic.

You get an exclusive deal with an app/company to be only on their platform.

Q: “I’m getting an SSL mixed content warning from the browser. My site is HTTPS. What’s wrong?”

A: There is likely a photo on your site that is linked with http instead of https. If that photo (or other linked file) is on your site, change the link to https and you should be OK.  If it’s offsite, see if the file works with https from the other source (sometimes it will).  If that doesn’t work, down the file and re-upload it to your site and change the link.  Also, use a plugin like Really Simple SSL to force https on all links that it will work on. 

If you are hosting and publishing on blubrry.com directly,  make sure you put YOUR email address in the Podcast Settings in the blubrry.com dashboard.  That way YOU will get the email from Apple and others instead of us.

A trick we use in support for looking at RSS feeds.

Install the Firefox browser (you don’t have to use it for anything other than looking at feeds if you don’t like the browser).

Install the Add-on called RSSPreview  https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/rsspreview/ (Very important that you get the one with no space in the name of it. There is another one called RSS Preview that is not the one I’m talking about).

Then, when you load your feed in Firefox you get a nice view of it.

You will see the title of your show, the description, the image and the posts listed.

When you publish an episode, load your feed in Firefox and double check that it is there, and plays (You can click on the enclosure to open the media in the browser).

Best Practice:

Titling your podcast

Be careful that you are not using something in your title that is trademarked. 

What is a good title for a podcast?

Shorter titles are generally better

Unique titles are best (Do a search for the title you are thinking about using)

Do not stuff titles with keywords.

Make it easy to spell and pronounce

Maybe see if it means something totally different in other languages.  (Not sure how to do that exactly)

If you change your password at Blubrry.com, you also have to re-login to blubrry.com from PowerPress.  Your PowerPress needs to have the new password.

Apple Podcasts has been a bit slow to update new episodes. It was 100% on their end.  Nothing was wrong with the feed.  Normal is 6-24 hours. Subscribers get it right away.

If your new episode doesn’t show on 1 of the many syndication points but does on others, chances are, that one app or directory is having an issue.   As with Apple, Spotify was having an issue that seems to be solved now.

Episode images - We are getting a lot of questions about those.  They only show in some directories.  Oddly, not in Apple other than episode search in iTunes (the old desktop software) We will have a list of which apps show which type of episode image in the show notes.  List of which platforms use episode images on Podcast Help Desk

With this enhancement, listeners can easily search for and find shows by title, topic, guest, host, and more with just a few taps.

 

Moreover, we are expanding host and guest images across show and episode pages for a subset of shows in French,

Asking your audience to leave a podcast rating or review is not uncommon, but the benefits are not always what podcasters are meant to believe. Mike and Todd explain why this is the case in Apple, and discuss some new virtual podcast events.

Best Practice -  Ratings and Reviews

You will hear a lot of podcasters say something like “Give us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts and other platforms. This will help us be found by others.”  or something to that effect. This is not exactly true. Apple (in particular) does not use Ratings and Reviews to rank podcasts or help in the search.  It’s really good for social proof but that is all it is (at this point).

Don’t let negative reviews get to you (you could always have some fun and read them on your show).

And sometimes more importantly, don’t let the positive ones go to your head. Take them for what they are.

Bonus Topic:

We've heard yet another example of YouTube demonetizing long-standing YouTubers that used to be making significant income. We say it here all the time, if you OWN your platform, you can not be taken out by rule changes or arbitrary reasons. This person had no warnings. When they looked on YouTube they do not know why they were taken out. They just had zero income and a note that says they can re-apply to be monetized in 30 days, no reason given.

And to that end, we highly encourage you to build your own platform on your own domain, while utilizing other platforms as well.

Building authority during a virtual event: We live in a world in virtual events as opposed to in-person for the time being. One way you're able to stand out and garner some authority in your industry is by having a professional background. These are relatively easy and free or affordable to create.

Updated Blubrry Directory Listings

We’ve had several users submit tickets about their Blubrry Directory listings showing no episodes, even though they’ve published some. The reason for this is because the Hosting Settings area in the Podcaster Dashboard is not set. You have to specify if you’re using a PowerPress feed or Blubrry.com feed, then the directory will update. Be sure to add your PowerPress feed in the correct spot as well, otherwise, we don’t know what feed you’re using!

Where Can I See My Monthly Quota Balance?

It’s always good to know how much upload space you have. There are a couple of different places you can find it, depending on how you’re using Blubrry Hosting.

Publishing from Blubrry.com

If you go to Upload New Media Files or Manage Published Files in the Podcaster Dashboard, you’ll see your upload balance in bold under the list of files. It will show you how much space you have left and how much your quota is in total.

Publishing with PowerPress

This one is a little harder to find, but when you go to upload a new file within PowerPress, you’ll find your balance at the bottom of the window. Scroll down and you’ll see Publishing Space Available with what’s left for the month.

Keep in mind that your quota resets on the first of the month,

The time has finally come, Google Play Music Podcasts will be shut down in the upcoming weeks. We've heard news of this in the past, but it appears late summer, early fall will be it's last days. On this podcast, we say god riddance. Todd and Mike also chat about some upcoming virtual podcast events you don't want to miss such as Podfest and The Podcast Academy.

Blubrry is known for integrating with WordPress, and so we really went through some best hygiene practices with WordPress. Managing a website for years on end is no easy feat and we included some tips that people might miss over time.

Google Podcasts Manager is replacing Google Play Music Podcast Portal as the new home for your podcast listeners on Google. Starting in the next few weeks, you’ll no longer be able to add new podcast shows through Podcast Portal. Later this year, access to Google Play Music Podcast Portal will be removed permanently.

The Podcast Academy is having an August Social event.  August 13th at 5pm Eastern.

Podcast Awards slate coming out soon. Nominations are over.

Podfest Global Summit kicks off Monday, Aug. 10 and runs through the week, ending on Saturday the 15th. Todd joined the pre-event festivities yesterday.

Best Practice:

WordPress Hygiene 

Keep things updated (Plugins, WordPress and Themes)

Remove unused plugins or themes

Complicated passwords for logins

Do not use “admin” for a login

Limit logins plugin is a good idea

Set “new users” to Subscriber if you are going to allow people to create logins. (mostly no need for this “feature”)

Stats reporting slow-down last weekend and early this week.   We had some maintenance on Friday that slowed down our stats reporting for a few days over the weekend.  Everything should be close to back to normal now.  No data was lost.

We still have not heard from Deezer about show submissions.

Be sure to set your email address in the Podcast Settings at Blubrry (feed Email) ONLY IF YOU ARE NOT USING POWERPRESS and host with Blubrry. Otherwise, we will get the emails to claim ownership of a show at Google and the notice when you are excepted into Apple Podcasts.

PowerPress *can* be used with any host.  But you have to still publish using PowerPress and not the embedded player from the host.  Otherwise, it makes it very hard to move to another host.

Ford has a podcast! Bring Back Bronco launches August 4th.

CES has made the switch to virtual for 2021. Still happening early January, they'll be moving everything to an online event, considering they're one of the largest events every year this is definitely the responsible course of action.

Retired Chicago radio personality, Steve Cochran goes to podcasting, Live From My Office.

Podcast Show will be hosted in-person in London May 2021. They’re expecting 6k attendees.

Deezer permanently features Black artists and podcasters on their Black Culture Channel
