People hate when 20-somethings talk about their old college radio days. It's boring and not that impressive and with that being said... Back when I was a college radio DJ and Music Director for WMAR, Marist College Radio (oh you haven't heard of us?), I had to listen to a lot of crap. We would get singles from bands like Secondhand Serenade and I think that is the only example I need to give. In the middle of the shit storm of blahblah music we got a cd entitled "American in Love". I was in love. His name was John Elliott and we spoke the other week at the Lizard Lounge in Cambridge, the coolest basement since my 6th grade friend Ben Malenfont's where we used to have boy/girl parties and play shitty covers of Nirvana songs. Mr. Elliott was playing a solo show and recording a live song, one of which is featured in this show, and sat down to chat about too much to sum up here. When he's not touring the South he is finishing up a new record called "Backyards" and talking to music geeks like me.
I thought this would be funny, turns out it made me sad. Keri sits down with me to help me feel better about being a stumbling idiot who just wants to help. We read some hate mail and giggle. Viva La Depression...
Yeah you freaking idiot hipsters don't watch TV but you buy 'Knight Rider' shirts from urban outfitters. Idiots. I chat with Crit Obara about some of the good television out there. He runs the site Fuck Yeah Lost that has updates for my daily nerdgasm. He also writes for TV Overmind so I trust his judgment and even pitch my own show idea to him. WE HAVE TO GO BACK!
Blues/Rock/Grunge/Roman duo Blackbutton did me the favor of sitting out on the back porch to talk music. Still coming down from the night before the guys open up and share their thoughts on the resurgence of blues and we ask "where is grunge"? Remember the phone line is open (3-Dylan-Wise) send me an email, or a tweet, and have a great week!
Russell Chudnofsky enters "The Circle" and tells us about slide guitar, the Grand Ole Opry and not really playing with Faith Hill. I have been getting into more "roots" music lately and Russell was good enough to play some tunes in the home studio for me. Save & Close
How do I get so lucky? You know, I should probably spend more time working on my writing, right? I have asked two questions so far and not answered any of them. I am lucky to know all these people that are willing to share. This week I talk with Nick Orsini the author of Two Wrongs Make A Vice that is published through his own company. Jesus, all I have is this little blog. I need to step up my game.
Steve Almond, you fascinate me. This week I talk with the author of 'Rock and Roll Will Save Your Life', one of the only books I have read front-to-back since college, about music making us feel so right and why you liking crap isn't wrong. Here's the link. I wish I could write, oh well. I like music. That's good enough, right?
This weeks episode I PROVE that I am not Jesse Thorn. I talk with Brandon Reilly of the band Nightmare of You. I heard of these guys first in college on the MTVU channel that actually plays music videos. (sidenote* saw a study that asked kids under 14 if they knew what the "M" in MTV stood for... crazy) The band is great, Brandon was great and life is pretty good. Sorry I was so hard on myself in this one. Someone had to say it first so when you send me hate mail it won't hurt as bad. Viva la creation friends.
My final Toledo interview with one of my top one favorite Toledo bands, Phantasmagoria. These guys have been in my ears since maybe the 9th grade. I was in a pretty shitty punk/metal band when they formed and we have been competing ever since. They clearly won. Please enjoy this weeks long awaited episode, and keep calling the TMSIWTH phone at 3-Dylan-Wise.
This is always the most difficult part for me. I am by no means a good writer. I'm not much better at speaking but it comes easier to me. It's hard for me to wrap up what it means for me to be able to speak openly with the people I look up to. I won't even try here. This weeks episode is a long time coming, and I over appreciate all the emails and facebook messages about when the next episode is coming out. On an unrelated note I also appreciate the hate mail I got. I wonder if that guy even reads this. This week I sit down with Steven Jay Athanas in his backyard to talk about... everything. Most notably the question: do I stay or do I go. I go.
