La fotografia l’ha aiutata a trovare una via unica all’autoguarigione: ora aiuta gli altri a ritrovare se stessi. Scopriamo il percorso personale e professionale di Kathryn Chapman, fotografa inglese.

"Avevo circa 8 anni quando ho incontrato la fotografia, avevo una macchina fotografica molto semplice, me l’aveva regalata mio padre. Quando la usai la prima volta, mi innamorai della fotografia. Ancora non so che cosa mi attrasse quella volta, penso che avesse catturato la mia immaginazione, e non mi ha più lasciato".

"Penso che quando ci ritroviamo, non sono sicura che ci ritroviamo mai completamente, ma non credo che ne abbiamo bisogno o che dovremmo farlo, perché siamo in continuo cambiamento. Non sono la stessa persona di ieri. Quindi oggi ho trovato la me stessa di oggi. E domani ho trovato il domani. Non sono io per sempre. Sono solo io adesso. Io in questo momento. E cambierà per sempre. Quindi è come se fosse una costante scoperta, non è vero? Il continuo svelarsi e svelare e scoprire e stupirsi e meravigliarsi di come cresciamo e ci sviluppiamo e cambiamo nella nostra vita. Così abbiamo più saggezza e più esperienza di vita. E possiamo offrirla alle persone che incontriamo e con cui interagiamo. È un continuo svelarsi, vero? "

"Quando parlo con i clienti di come le immagini li fanno sentire, arrivano a un punto in cui non hanno parole per descrivere come si sentono, e sono sicura che è così anche per il profumo. Sai come ti senti, ma non ci sono parole per descriverlo. È in quel momento che so che stiamo arrivando al cuore della connessione personale con chi siamo e con ciò che accade dentro di noi, quando non abbiamo parole, perché è molto più profondo delle parole. "

Photography has helped her finding a unique way to self-healing. Now she helps others meeting themselves, face to face. Kathryn Chapman is a UK based professional photographer,

"I wanted to look myself in the eye, I wanted to be face to face with my emotions, with my deepest, darkest emotions, and really see who I was in my darkest moments and in my darkest feelings and sitting in those really, really difficult places. What I saw really surprised me, but I think what surprised me the most was how the images made me feel. I didn't hate what I saw. I didn't really look at them, I felt them. And so it was a kind of visceral process. I was incredibly aware of my own pain, but because they were in images and I could be slightly removed from it, and I allowed myself compassion."

"Every day I was waking up feeling better and better and better. And this was so unusual and so extraordinary for me, I wanted to mark it with another shoot. I had another image pop into my head - that I wanted to do something really expansive. And so I made a frock out of an old parachute and a basque, and I stood on the side of a windy hill, and I kind of flapped my arms around a bit and almost took off with this parachute! But it was amazing. It was this feeling of expansion and freedom and liberation and celebration of this newfound me.”

"So today I've found today me and tomorrow I'll find tomorrow me - it's not me forever, it's just me now, me in this moment. And it will be forever changing. So it's like it's the constant finding, isn't it? The constant unravelling and unveiling and discovery and wonder and marvel at how we grow and develop and change in our lives."

Conduce una azienda Agricola a Pancalieri, in provincia di Torino - Mirella Chiattone l’ha chiamata "Essenzialmenta", proprio perché coltiva questa straordinaria erba aromatica, su cui ha puntato tutto per realizzare un innovativo progetto di filiera corta.

"Inizi non facili: paese piccolo,  difficoltà legate al passaggio dalla lira all’euro, crisi economica…Ricordo con affetto e simpatia i primi acquisti, esclusivamente da parte di mia mamma e di altri pochissimi affezionati amici e parenti.  Decisivo per farmi conoscere  è stato  aprire i cancelli a scuole, associazioni, enti, aziende….organizzare iniziative didattiche e concorsi; visite guidate alle coltivazioni e al "giardino delle mente".

"Mi ha motivata molto la necessità  di dimostrare (soprattutto a me stessa) che si può  fare molto nonostante le  difficoltà. E poi il contesto in cui svolgo il mio lavoro: l’obiettivo è di far parte del così detto "Alternative Food Market", soprattutto per il rapporto produttore-consumatore finale, declinato negli aspetti della qualità dell'offerta (rapporto qualità-prezzo), della produzione a chilometro zero, della tipicità e della tecnica di coltivazione il più possibile "biologica". 

"I primi riconoscimenti sono stati “informali”,  dai clienti: niente web e social network, è stato il passaparola o il passaggio in zona per puro caso (del turista, o di chi viaggia per lavoro…)  che  ha fatto la mia “fortuna”.   Poi la partecipazione al “Salone Internazionale del Gusto di Torino” (organizzato da SLOW FOOD, fin dalla prima edizione) e ad altri eventi di pregio  hanno contribuito ulteriormente".

Seguendo le sue passioni, il dottor Stephan Helary ha fondato Terres D'Afrique, un marchio cosmetico basato su rari prodotti botanici africani e sulla cura di queste piante indigene e delle comunità che vivono tra loro.

"Sono nato in Madagascar e questo penso che abbia avuto un grande impatto su di me. Così la mia percezione del mondo e soprattutto del mondo naturale è nata lì e come sapete, il Madagascar ha una flora e una fauna uniche. Circa il 95% delle specie sono endemiche del Madagascar, e non si possono trovare in nessun'altra parte del mondo. È un hotspot di biodiversità, ma anche molto minacciato dalla deforestazione, dall'erosione e dal cambiamento climatico. Così, da un'età molto, molto giovane, penso di essere stato molto rapidamente sensibile alla distruzione degli habitat e all'estinzione delle specie, perché molte specie in Madagascar sono minacciate. E questo ha creato in me un interesse molto forte per la natura. Direi una passione perché da quel giorno volevo diventare un veterinario per lavorare nella conservazione. Vivendo in Madagascar sono stato esposto a un sacco di oli essenziali diverso e piante medicinali tradizionali. Perché il Madagascar ha una delle farmacopee più estese del mondo, molte piante medicinali vengono da lì".

"Sai, a volte passo attraverso fasi in cui non ho nessuna idea creativa e questo mi stressa sempre. Divento sempre molto ansioso quando attraverso queste fasi in cui non sono creativo e non mi vengono idee. Ma a volte mi viene improvvisamente ho un'idea. Non so sempre come, ma penso che venga da un interesse nell'esplorare il mondo, esplorare la natura in diversi ambienti, diverse culture. Penso che sia da lì che prendiamo l'ispirazione e poi improvvisamente hai l'idea di combinare qualcosa che viene dall'Oriente e qualcosa che è africano. "

"Quando si è costantemente tentati da vestiti, macchine, telefoni e quant'altro, si diventa un po' condizionati dalle cose materiali - allora tendiamo a dimenticare da dove veniamo e che la natura è la nostra origine. Ci sono un sacco di studi al giorno d'oggi che dimostrano che passare del tempo nella natura o anche guardare immagini della natura ha un effetto incredibilmente positivo sulla nostra salute mentale. Quindi penso che per me, sapete, riconnettermi con la natura o rimanere connessi con la natura è la via. Con questo, voglio dire, bisogna muoversi. Non sto parlando di un parco in città. Vai in un Parco Nazionale e fai escursioni in montagna e trascorri davvero del tempo nella natura selvaggia. "

Following his passions, dr. Stephan Helary founded Terres D'Afrique, a cosmetic brand based on rare African botanicals and care for these indigenous plants and the communities that live among them.

"So I was born in Madagascar, and I think it has definitely had a great impact on me. So my perception of the world and especially towards the natural world was born there and as you know, Madagascar has got unique flora and fauna. There's about 95 per cent of the species there, that are endemic to Madagascar, that you can't find anywhere else in the world. It's a hotspot of biodiversity, but also one that is very threatened by deforestation, erosion and climate change. So from a very, very young age, I think I was very quickly sensitive to habitat destruction and species extinction because a lot of species in Madagascar are threatened. And that created in me a very strong interest in nature. And I would say a passion because from that day I wanted to become a vet to work in conservation. And that was, you know, living in Madagascar that it has also exposed me to a lot of different essential oil and traditional medicinal plants. Because Madagascar is one of the most extensive pharmacopoeias in the world, lots of medicinal plants come from there."

"You know, sometimes I go through phases where I don't have any creative idea and it always stresses me. I always get very anxious when I go through these places where I'm just not being creative and I'm not coming up with ideas. And but sometimes, you know, it just comes to me, like, it's just suddenly I've got an idea. I don't always know how, but I think it comes from, you know, an interest in exploring the world, exploring nature in different environments, different cultures. I think that's where we take our inspiration and then suddenly you have an idea of combining something that comes from the East and something that is African. "

"When you are constantly being tempted with clothes and cars and phones and whatever, you kind of become a little bit conditioned with material things - then we tend to forget where we come from and nature is where we come from. There are a lot of studies nowadays that show spending time in nature or even looking at images of nature has an incredibly positive effect on our mental health. So I think for me, you know, reconnecting with nature or staying connected with nature is the way. By that, I mean, go wild. Like, you know, I'm not talking about a park in the town. You go to National Park and go hiking in the mountains and really spend time in the wilderness. "

Bright colors and delicate signs reflect the synthesis between her city of origin, Trieste, and the city of her soul, Paris. Tamara Sturm is an illustrator and teaches at the Comics Academy in Trieste.

"Let's say that when I meet someone new and want to get to know them and think "I'd love to give them a drawing as a gift, I'd like to know what their favorite things are, what they'd like to have as a reminder of themselves", I get so excited and want to create that I realize that mine is definitely a passion that has never faded over time.  I also believe that giving a drawing as a gift means making people feel heard and loved". 

"I have always had Paris in my heart and in fact I am very inspired by its romantic atmospheres and I think that if my illustrations had a voice, they would speak in French. In real life I have only lived in Paris for three months but with my mind I am often still there. And in fact in my lab at home I have one large painting that is a photograph of the view of Paris from above and it almost looks like a window to me; it makes me feel as if  I can magically return to that tiny studio in Montparnasse and then back to Trieste, as soon as I put down my pencil and watercolors. The Ville Lumière undoubtedly is a wonderful city but for me more than anything else it symbolized the romantic place of dreams where I could allow myself to be myself and share my art."

Colori accesi e segni delicati rispecchiano la sintesi tra la sua città di origine, Trieste e quella dell'anima, Parigi. Tamara Sturm è illustratrice e insegna all'Accademia del Fumetto di Trieste.

"Quando mi capita di conoscere una nuova persona e di volerla conoscere, vorrei tanto regalarle un disegno; vorrei sapere quali sono le sue cose preferite, cosa le piacerebbe avere come promemoria di se stessa lì e mi emoziona e mi viene così tanta voglia di creare che mi rendo conto che sicuramente la mia è una passione che non è mai sfumata nel tempo. E inoltre credo che regalare un disegno significa far sentire le persone ascoltate ed amate appunto. I miei lavori preferiti sono proprio i ritratti personalizzati perché penso che sia la maniera perfetta di esprimere l'ascolto e la cura che si vuole dedicare a quella persona."

"Ho da sempre avuto Parigi nel cuore e infatti mi ispiro molto alle sue romantiche atmosfere e penso che se le mie illustrazioni avessero voce, parlerebbero in francese. Nella vita reale ho vissuto a Parigi solo tre mesi ma con la mente spesso sono ancora lì. E infatti nella mia zona studio a casa ho un unico grande quadro che è la fotografia della vista di Parigi dall'alto e mi pare quasi una finestra;  mi fa sentire come se mettendomi alla scrivania tornassi magicamente a quel minuscolo studio a Montparnasse per poi tornare a Trieste, appena poso la matita e gli acquerelli. Penso sia un buon metodo per mantenere la concentrazione e l'ispirazione, a proposito anche di promemoria, per le cose importanti che si vogliono fare. La Ville Lumière indubbiamente è una città meravigliosa ma per me  più di tutto simboleggiava il luogo romantico dei sogni dove potevo concedermi di essere me stessa e condividere la mia arte."

Sally Snowman è il guardiano della Guardia Costiera del faro di Boston, il settantesimo guardiano; i primi sessantanove sono stati uomini.
Questa intervista fa parte del progetto Arcipelaghi/Archipelagos, un progetto di coaching e ricerca antropologica su isole e arcipelaghi come metafore.

"La Guardia Costiera voleva assumere un guardiano civile e usare gli ausiliari per supportare il guardiano civile. Hanno fatto una ricerca nazionale. Ho presentato la mia domanda e ho ottenuto il lavoro. Il lavoro ha trovato me. È stato un caso fortuito e la domanda che mi viene fatta spesso è: cosa facevi prima di essere assunta nel 2003? Ero un professore universitario, quindi abbiamo un professore universitario che fa il guardiano del faro".

"È incredibile di notte, quando stai dormendo e in cima alla torre, c'è questo cristallo di nove piedi composto da 336 prismi individuali in 12 sezioni. E poi c'è una lente a occhio di bue che ingrandisce una lampada o una lampadina da mille, a uno a due milioni di candele. Siamo così vicini sull'isola che quando si guarda fuori dalla finestra e la luce sta ruotando, si possono letteralmente vedere 12 fasci di luce che escono rispetto a quando si è in acqua e si vede solo un flash di 10 secondi. Medito su questo, lo guardo e vado in questo stato alterato di beatitudine e mi sento così al sicuro".

Sally Snowman is the Coast Guard keeper of Boston Light, the 70th keeper with the first sixty-nine having been men.
This interview is part of the Archipelagos project, a coaching and anthropological research project on islands and archipelagos as metaphors.

"The Coast Guard wanted to hire a civilian keeper and use auxiliaries to support the civilian keeper. They did a national search. I put in my application and I got the job. The job found me. That was so serendipitous and so the question that gets asked often is, what were you doing before you were hired in 2003? I was a college professor, so we have a college professor doing lighthouse keeper".

"It is amazing at night when you're sleeping and at the top of the tower, there's this nine-foot crystal made up of 336 individual prisms in this 12 sections of them. And then there's a bullseye lens that magnifies a one thousand one lamp or bulb to two million candle power. So we're so close on the island that when looking out the window and the light is rotating, you can literally see 12 beams of light coming out versus when you were in the water and you just see a 10-second flash. I meditate on that, I just watch that and I go into this altered state of bliss and I feel so safe".

Lucia Scuderi is an award-winning illustrator and painter, who lives and works in Catania, Sicily, near the sea and at the foot of Mount Etna.

"I fell in love with the illustrated book in which these two codes, imaginative and verbal, are intertwined and are for children but not only for children. I fell in love with the illustrated book as an adult because of what this object was able to give me, because of its capacity for poetry, for great irony, because it is for children, so it never takes itself too seriously, and it is a view that adults should also have on important issues - so it is truly poetic communication in the best sense of the word."

"I realised how Sicilian I am when, at the very beginning of my career, I went on a course with Stefan Zavrel, a very famous watercolourist who lived in Italy. He was from Prague, Bohemian, and he used these watercolours to make all these... he called them "mists", these little mists, these very delicate colours, everything was very blurred. I came in and I was doing a black white red on blue and he said "but where are you from?" - "from Sicily". Immediately these strong, typical contrasts came out, given by the light and the dark, and it seems to me that the strong light brings out these contrasts as if we lacked - I like to think of it metaphorically - as if we lacked the middle ground."
