  • Back Issue Bloodbath Episode 18: Chris Claremont
Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Gavin Stephens as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.
This week, Gavin and Andrew put the spotlight on another great comic creator who’s had a legendary run in comicdom, the one and only Chris Claremont. Claremont is one of the creators given the credit for “changing the game” in the late seventies/early eighties by writing characters that were more three dimensional than the typical heroes and villains of the time. By infusing realistic personalities and problems into his storytelling, he got a whole new generation of comic fans hooked on the crazy adventures of Marvel’s merry mutants, the X-Men. His work on the X-characters is still felt to this day and many look back on his run on Uncanny X-Men (with artists Dave Cockrum, John Byrne & Paul Smith) as the glory days of the Marvel Universe.
If you’re a long time fan of this creator’s work, take this opportunity to relive some of his greatest achievements as we look back on his storied career. If you’ve never read any stories by Chris Claremont, allow us to give you a taste of some of his best work and inform you on what books to pick up. And as a special bonus, we’ll also be featuring an excerpt from an interview that Andrew and Mr. Green had with the man on Geek Hard back in 2014. Here comes another hearty helping of comics knowledge from two guys that love their funny books as much as the next fearless fanboy. It’s all happening right here, right now on an ALL NEW episode of Back Issue Bloodbath.

If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
The Dark Phoenix Saga is considered by some as the greatest Marvel Story every written. We talk about it and more in our creator spotlight on Chris Claremont.

Geek News of the Week regarding the just announced Flash/Supergirl TV crossover. We get to poke fun at Amazon for potentially opening 300-400 physical bookstores in the near future. And get the lowdown on in studio guest J. Torres latest project – The Mighty Zodiac for Oni Press.
Our review of Hail, Caesar! starring Josh Brolin, George Clooney and Alden Ehrenreich. Synopsis: In the early 1950s, Eddie Mannix is busy at work trying to solve all the problems of the actors and filmmakers at Capitol Pictures. His latest assignments involve a disgruntled director, a singing cowboy, a beautiful swimmer and a handsome dancer. As if all this wasn’t enough, Mannix faces his biggest challenge when Baird Whitlock gets kidnapped while in costume for the swords-and-sandals epic “Hail, Caesar!” If the studio doesn’t pay $100,000, it’s the end of the line for the movie star.
We also celebrate our 6th year on air at Reality Radio 101 with special guest comic writer J. Torres. Who is in studio to help us this week to present the Golden Grant Award for our Best Comic Creator Guest of 2015. The award went to uber creator Chip Zdarsky (Sex Criminals, Kaptara, Jughead). We also give out our award for Best Video Interview to The Cast of Bitten and of course our 2015 Guest of the Year award went to Tommie-Amber Pirie. We interviewed her last March 29th on Episode 252 where we discussed her time on Bitten season 2 and marvelled at her ability to swear like a sailor. This time she spilt a can of Coke on her bed as she couldn’t contain her excitement and shock of winning our Guest of the Year.
All that and of course our Geek Picks.
It was a great show! That has been lost… maybe forever.
Unfortunately the recording appears to have been lost to the ether of the internet. Once we realized this, we quickly put this shortened show together so that you still had something to listen to this week. So please enjoy this replacement show even though it is missing our latest interview with Tommie-Amber from the live show. If however something changes and we are able to pull this lost episode back from the internet we will post it ASAP.

  • Back Issue Bloodbath Episode 16: Marvel/DC’s Lack of New Characters
Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Gavin Stephens as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.
If you’ve listened to the show, you know we love talking about Marvel and DC Comics. One thing that has been a constant problem with the Big Two in the past couple of decades is the lack of new characters created in their respective universes. The House of Ideas appears to retread a lot of their old ones. And since the New 52, the Distinguished Competition has been rehashing/revamping/retelling older origins and story arcs. While there’s a few new heroes and villains produced each year, the majority of stories focus on characters created over thirty years ago. What’s the reason for the lack of new characters? That’s what we’re trying to find out on an ALL NEW Bloodbath!

If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
These characters might be different, but you can’t really say they’re “All New”. That’s what we talk about on an ALL NEW Bloodbath.

On this episode we take provide a special presentation of our first ever LIVE show. Yes we do our show live each week but we have never performed in front of an actual audience. We invaded The Comedy Bar on November 21st, 2015 along with some friends. Performing live was The Dandies (a Star Trek improv troop), singer Leslie Hudson and comedian Gavin Stephens. We also ran into Ajay Fry of the Space show InnerSpace who appeared to perform a battle of wits with Mr. Green in our first Nerd-Off trivia contest. There were shenanigans and hilarity to be had this night. Keep an eye out, there maybe more these in the future.
