  • Continuity vs. History
Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

    Continuity

    * the unbroken and consistent existence or operation of something over a period of time.
    * the maintenance of continuous action and self-consistent detail in the various scenes of a story.

    History

    * the study of past events, particularly in human affairs.
    * the whole series of past events connected with someone or something.

This week on Back Issue Bloodbath, we take a look at Continuity and History. The word “continuity” has been used many times on our show. Half those times, “history” would be better suited. History is a period of time that cannot be changed. Continuity is a living organism in the world of comics that can change over time.
At times, it’s used to present a new facet of a character, opening them to a different world of stories. Iceman recently experienced this by embracing his homosexuality. Other times, it’s sloppily changed and the new information does not fit within the character’s story. Gwen Stacy having an affair with Norman Osborn is a prime example. Good or bad, continuity is not an exact science.
Take a listen as Andrew and Sammy dissect the battle of Continuity vs. History. There’s no clear winner as the fight rages on! Take a listen and enjoy. You just might learn something.
Have an idea for a certain topic we should cover? Have an indie comic book you’d like us to review? Send us an email at [email protected] with “Back Issue Bloodbath” in the subject line. We talk with director Nick Szostakiwskyj. His new film, Hammer of the Gods will be playing at this year’s Blood In The Snow Canadian Film Festival on Saturday, November 24th at 4:30PM. Nick told us more about the film. Hammer of the Gods follows falling-from-grace rock group, half a decade after the release of their hit single, as they travel deep into the Canadian wilderness on a spirit journey armed with a bag of psychedelic drugs. The journey seems harmless enough, until the isolated musicians begin to realize the terrifying hallucinations they are seeing and hearing aren’t hallucinations at all. For more on Hammer of the Gods, check out the BITS Film Fest Website
Our review of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald starring Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler. In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans of raising pure-blood wizards to rule over all non-magical beings, Albus Dumbledore enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.
We also talk with writer, actress and comedian Dani Fernandez! Dani is probably best known for hosting gigs for Nerdist and Project Alpha on Fangirling and Natural Selection. She also hosts a podcast called Nerdificent. Dani talked about all this and more! Dani Fernandez is a writer, actress, and comedian who has written for shows on New Form, Fullscreen, and Epic Meal Time, as well as various humor sites. She has been a host with Geek & Sundry, HyperRPG, Funimation, Mental Floss, and Machinima and has been a commentator for IGN, VH1, Collider, Screen Junkies, San Diego Comic Con, LA Comic Con, and WonderCon.
    It was a great show!

  • A Marvel Knights Retrospective!
20 years ago, in the fall of 1998, Marvel Knights was born. An imprint at Marvel headed up by Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti, the focus was to take lesser characters and give them a new, unique style. Whether it was giving Daredevil a high profile writer in Kevin Smith, or giving the Punisher a new supernatural spin, they took a lot of risks. Some of those risks paid off and brought new audiences to the House of Ideas. Daredevil, Black Panther, Black Widow, The Inhumans, Marvel Boy and The Sentry all had success under the Marvel Knights Banner. The Punisher would eventually be a hit as well thanks to Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. Overall, it’s an imprint that fans remember with fondness.
Join us as Andrew and Sammy take look back on the first 3 years of Marvel Knights, going over the hits and misses. They also explain how the brand went on to change some customs not just at Marvel, but in the industry in general, and how this all lead to Joe Q moving up the editorial ladder right the EIC chair. It’s a fun walk down memory lane as we remember some of our favourite MK books. Take a listen and enjoy.

  • Grinch Killer
Originally Aired: 11/09/18 – Our review of The Grinch. Play an interview with Fran Kranz and Brett Simmons and the geek news of the week.
    Show Notes:
We talk the news of the week. Disney announces the name of their new streaming service. Harvard researchers have a theory that says Oumuamua asteroid is actually a spacecraft. European Space Agency releases research that shows a lost continent under Antarctica that could help better explain all tectonic plate shifts.
Our review of The Grinch starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Cameron Seely, Rashida Jones. The Grinch and his loyal dog, Max, live a solitary existence inside a cave on Mount Crumpet. His main source of aggravation comes during Christmastime when his neighbors in Whoville celebrate the holidays with a bang. When the Whos decide to make Christmas bigger and brighter, the disgruntled Grinch realizes there is one way to gain peace and quiet. With help from Max, the green grump hatches a scheme to pose as Santa Claus, steal Christmas and silence the Whos’ holiday cheer once and for all.
We also play Mr. Green’s interview with actor Fran Kranz and director Brett Simmons about their new film You Might Be The Killer at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival. The film had a great showing at the festival and also aired on SYFY throughout October. You’ll hear Green’s full interview with the guys. Inspired by an exchange of tweets between Sam Sykes and Chuck Wendig, You Might Be The Killer (directed by Brett Simmons) is the story of a camp counsellor who finds himself in the middle of a cliched scary movie massacre. Looking for guidance on what to do to stay alive, he calls his friend who happens to be an expert on horror film tropes. While tracing back through his steps, Chuck (Alyson Hannigan) presents the possibility that Sam (Fran Kranz) might actually be the killer.

  • Hey Kids! Comics! by Howard Chaykin
This week on Bloodbath, we take a look at an Image Title that gives a behind-the-scenes look into the world of comics. Hey Kids! Comics! is written and drawn by Howard Chaykin and is his self-described love letter to the funny book business. Following three fictitious characters through the 40s, 50s, 60s and even the early 2000s, the series gives a glimpse into what it was like to be a creator in the industry. Chaykin’s take on the politics and business practices of the time are spot on and the characters who are stand-ins and amalgams of famous creators from the past are interesting and intriguing.
Take a listen as Andrew and Sammy review the first three issues of Hey Kids! Comics! Find out what they think of the series and hear their thoughts on who each of the characters represent. As comic fans, the guys always like a look into “how the sausage gets made”. You’ll also hear an excerpt from an interview that took place on Geek Hard earlier this year where Chaykin talked about the series and set the record straight that this is not a “poison pen letter” comic.  It’s all coming your way on a brand new Back Issue Bloodbath.
