In this episode of Poetry Talks, we explore how poets use imagery and metaphor to create vivid and meaningful poems. Imagery is the use of language that appeals to the senses, while metaphor is the comparison of two things that are different but share some qualities. Both techniques can enhance the emotion and message of a poem, as well as stimulate the reader’s imagination and creativity.
Our guest today is Papaya, a Brooklyn-born Puerto Rican poet who writes with honesty and courage about anything that inspires her or moves her emotionally. Her poetry is mostly in English with some Spanish words. Her Latina culture is part of her identity and she honors it in her poetry. She has been writing since she was in elementary school and poetry is her passion, her true love, and her therapy. She shares her poems on Instagram.
She shares with us two of her poems that use imagery and metaphor to convey powerful feelings and messages: X and Nighttime.
We talk with Papaya about how she creates imagery and metaphor in her poems, what they mean to her, and how they affect her readers. We also ask Papaya about her creative process, how she chooses the words and images for her poems, what challenges she faces as a poet, how she deals with feedback and criticism, what advice she has for aspiring poets, and who are some of her favorite poets.
