Poland-born actress Pola Negri first had great success in European movies and then became the first star to be imported to Hollywood. She had been the one bringing down the American embargo against German movies - her box office draw was that big. She eventually resided in a Hollywood mansion modelled after the White House and was the best-paid star in town.
