Olivia says if you’re high, or really need a good laugh, or both, you must watch Kung Pow: Enter the Fist. It’s a 2002 movie written, directed by, and starring Steve Oedekerk, who inserted himself into a 1976 Hong Kong martial arts film with hilarious results. It’s available on Amazon Prime.

Shauna suggests you ignore the haters and find a theater that’s still showing 2026’s Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock as the Girl of Steel, along with her adorable dog Krypto. It’s based on the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic series and is a worthy part of James Gunn’s DCEU.

So far in 2026, the big-budget superhero flick Supergirl tanked while quirky indie projects like Backrooms and Obsessionbecame mega-hits. Who knows what's going to be trending over the remainder of 2026? The Pop Culture Junkies know! The second half of the year is often when the year's top films come out: Oscar-bait, holiday movies, sequels, prequels and blockbuster action-adventure flicks will soon be turning up in a cineplex near you. Shauna and Olivia look ahead to predict which films are going to be hits, which movies are must-sees, and discuss a few that really didn't need to be made at all.

Shauna suggests you check out 2008’s found-footage zombie flick Quarantine, starring Jennifer Carpenter and Jay Hernandez, on Prime. It’s a gory but good story about a reporter following firefighters on a distress call and gets quarantined with them following a disaster.

Olivia and Shauna recount their weekend in San Francisco enjoying the best that Pride Month has to offer there: Drag acts, wig snatching contests, music, brunch - all the good stuff. Then they get serious and talk about a topic that some could find triggering - the rise (once again) of the "thin is in" movement, especially in today's media. Please use caution if you would rather avoid discussions of eating disorders and diet. The Junkies have lived through this before: in the '90s and 2000s we were told that Renee Zellweger in Bridget Jones' Diary and Anne Hathaway in The Devil Wears Prada were "fat", and then the era of the Kardashians ushered in a new trendy body type: curvy, but with a tiny waist. Now the pendulum is swinging back to thin again, sometimes dangerously so. Olivia and Shauna ask the question: who benefits from the drive to make women take up as little space as possible, in more ways than just body type? Do celebrities have a responsibility to their fans as well as themselves to avoid unhealthy choices when it comes to how they choose to represent their choices when it comes to diet and fitness? And how can we deal with the harmful messages bombarding us in the media? If your relationship with eating or body image is a concern for you or someone you know, help is available. Reach out to the eating disorder helpline run by ANAD at 1-888-375-7767 for support.

Live from Phoenix Fan Fusion, Olivia and Shauna head a panel to discuss a serious topic with their characteristic dark humor and feminist sass. Womansploitation - using violence against women as entertainment - is found in movies, in television shows, in books, in true crime documentaries and podcasts. Obviously, there is money to be made in victimizing women for the enjoyment of an audience. The Junkies look at the history of this sub-genre, discuss some examples and go into why it’s so popular and the effects this has on society. With the help of the audience and research, they ask and answer questions like 'when does depicting violence against women become critique — and when does it become consumption?' and 'is the violence in the story a “narrative necessity” or exploitation?' Olivia and Shauna give examples of movies, TV shows and directors (maybe some of your favorites!) that have been challenged for their use of violence against girls and women. From 'fridging' to final girls to the perfect true crime victim, the Junkies cover the many, many ways women are exploited for entertainment.

Olivia recommends the riveting Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke, a new book that offers a science-fictional look at today’s tradwife movement by time-traveling a tradwife-influencer poser back in time to 1855, forcing her to do without modern conveniences. Find it at your local library or independent bookstore, or stream on Spotify with a subscription.
