  • Carrie + Scars of Dracula + Nicholas Ray - Eclectica #139

    Bright Eyes, Burning like Dracula

Cinema Eclectica is a movie podcast that cares, and this week we care a lot about Christopher Lee's eyes in "Scars of Dracula". Do they sting? They look really sore.

That's half of Off the Shelf done, but smashing into it like a telekinetically thrown knife is Rob's review of Brian De Palma's breakthrough classic "Carrie" - which is being reissued by Arrow Video. There's also a redesigned, new-fangled Film of the Week section with Nicholas Ray's pleasingly old-fangled psychological noir "In a Lonely Place".

  • TAG + On Body and Soul + KIlling of a Sacred Deer + Good Time - Eclectica #138

Brought To You By Vague Existential Despair

It might be Justice League week at the cinemas, but Off the Shelf sees us assembling an international super-team of maverick auteurs.

While Rob heads to Japan for Sion Sono's kill-crazy "Tag", Graham pops over to Hungary for Ildiko Enyedi's surreal love story "On Body and Soul" and Aidan takes a trip to what might possibly be Mars to put Yorgos Lanthimos' new film "The Killing of a Sacred Deer" under the microscope by Aidan.

We might be hard-up for cash (seriously - just check out the number of embarrassingly needy bids we make), but we're nowhere near as desperate as Robert Pattinson is in the Safdie brothers' new crime thriller "Good Time". Did we have a … well, you know … with it?

  • Witchhammer + Torture Garden + Paddington 2 - Eclectica #137

Tinky-Winky, LaLa, Dipsy & Edgar Allan Po

An uncharacteristic happiness and contentment falls on the show this week as Aidan, Graham and Rob discuss "Paddington 2".

Before that though, there are all the regular features - including Off the Shelf where Graham tackles Second Run's release of Otakar Vávra's historical nightmare "Witchhammer", Aidan flees the nudging piano as he reviews Indicator's reissue of Freddie Francis's "Torture Garden", and Rob talks about a book. Yes, a book! Does he know what show he's on?

After that that it's time to see if Paul King has continued to look after that bear from darkest Peru.

What would be the Hugh Grant equivalent of the McConnagheissance, anyway? The Grantidote?

  • New Jack City + The Untamed + Murder on the Orient Express - Eclectica #136

Seriously, Don't Go into the Basement

We've gathered the suspects (Ryan, Rob and Graham), in one room and it's now time to review "Murder on the Orient Express".

Before that though, Ryan tackles the tangled web of intrigue that is Warner Home Archive's triple-format release of "New Jack City", Rob watches in horror as Arrow Academy release of Amat Escalante's tentacular "The Untamed", and Graham mistakenly subjects himself to Sean Penn's Cannes turkey "The Last Face". So something for everyone there - except the last one which is something for no-one.

After that, it's all aboard for Kenneth Branagh's wild moustache ride. Does it stay on track, or go off the rails?

  • Thor: Ragnarok + Season of the Witch + The Serpent and the Rainbow - Eclectica #135

    A Tale of Two Hammers

A chill fog rises in the air, an unearthly howl is heard across the moors, and Rob's wi-fi packs up.

Yes, it's our Halloween special, and after a brief stopover in Hammer territory with Indicator's reissue of "Maniac" (also known as "The Maniac"), we remember some of the horror icons that we lost this year. Graham has Tobe Hooper's "I'm Dangerous Tonight", Ryan has George A. Romero's "Season of the Witch" and Rob has Wes Craven's "The Serpent and the Rainbow".

After that, it's the end of the world as we know it (and we feel fine) with Taika Waititi's "Thor: Ragnarok".

    Tag yourself I'm a three-headed gladiator.

  • A Ghost Story + Victoria & Abdul + Life + The Death of Stalin - Eclectica #134

Life ... Don't Talk to Me About Life

A spectre is haunting the land - the spectre of major releases from earlier in the year that we didn't cover at the time.

On our latest B-sides episode Graham gives the royal treatment to Stephen Frears's "Victoria and Abdul", Aidan is suitably haunted by David Lowery's "A Ghost Story" and Mick is blasted into the airless vacuum of Daniel Espinosa's "Life".

After a Question of the Week where we reflect on our favourite missing-in-action actors, we move onto a new release as the proletariat finally have access to Armando Iannucci's glorious "The Death of Stalin". Anyone who doesn't listen to this episode after all that will be added to a list.

  • The Suspicious Death of a Minor + Blood Simple + The Snowman - Eclectica #133

    The Unveiling of Little Frank

It’s carnage this week. Complete lawless misrule.

What could have caused this? Was it the orange skies? The smooth jazz playing in the background? The release of a new Michael Fassbender film?

It’s the latter, obviously, as Film of the Week "The Snowman" gets Ryan, Graham, Aidan, and new recruit Andrew ironically hot under the collar. We also discuss our favourite Fassy films in Question of the Week - and never before has the phrase “I love Shame” been said so frequently outside of certain Soho gentlemen’s establishments.

Off the Shelf provides only comparative normality, and it’s Giallo handbags at dawn for Ryan with Arrow’s "The Suspicious Death of a Minor" while Aidan goes right back to the roots of the Coen brothers with Studio Canal’s re-release of "Blood Simple". As always, we end on a look ahead to next week’s releases which gives us a chance to find out which of us is unacceptably excited about Geostorm.

  • Blade Runner 2049 + Miracle Mile + The Ghoul + Point Blank - Eclectica #132

Summoning Keanu For The Ultimate Man Date

In summary then, this week’s show is a land of contrasts.

Off the Shelf feature Ryan facing the horror of mental illness in the Ben Wheatley-produced "The Ghoul", Rob surviving the horror of ‘80s hair (and, to a lesser extent, nuclear war), in Arrow’s reissue of "Miracle Mile", and Graham lucking-out with the uncomplicated pleasure of watching Lee Marvin beat up all of California in "Point Blank".

A Question of the Week about belated sequels can only lead to one thing as Film of the Week. No, it’s not xXx: The Return of Xander Cage. It’s Denis Villeneuve’s "Blade Runner 2049" - which sharply divides opinions among the team. In Spinal Tap terms, one of us is fire, one of us is ice, and the other is like lukewarm water - but which is which?

And which one of us is a replicant?

  • The Chase + Suntan + Claire Denis - Eclectica #131

Some of My Best Friends are Baguettes!

This week we ask the question, how French can a cannibal movie be? Fortunately we have Rob's big bag of national stereotypes to help us work this out, and it's equally fortuitous that Graham has Indicator's reissue of Arthur Penn's star-studded crime thriller "The Chase", while Aidan has Argyris Papadimitropoulos's slow-burning "Suntan" from Montage Pictures - both of which can stop him talking for a while

A Question of the Week about our favourite scores sees Ryan squeezing his mind-grapes, and the culinary horror continues with Claire Denis's anthropophagous (look it up) "Trouble Every Day". You might feel the need for a stiff drink after that - and we've got that covered too with our new drinking game.

  • Ray Harryhausen + Young Frankenstein - Eclectica #130

The Man With the Three-Bleep Name

This week our Film of the Week is Mel Brooks's comedy classic "Young Frankenstein", which leads Aidan and Graham into a dilemma - is it too obvious to recommend people watch James Whale's "Frankenstein" alongside it?

While we ponder that, there's also a three-film set of Ray Harryhausen movies (20 Million Miles to Earth, It Came From Beneath The Sea and The 3 Worlds of Gulliver), to review in Off the Shelf. But hang on, two people can't review three films in their own! We need to get Rob … from the future!

After all that frippery it's time to get down to serious business with, er, "Young Frankenstein". Did it send us Wilder with delight, or did it give us the hump?
