  • Baby Driver + Thunderbolt and Lightfoot + Kedi - Eclectica #119

The Superheroes' Fountain of Eternal Youth

This week all of your questions will be answered. What films did Aidan and Ryan enjoy at the Edinburgh Film Festival? Who is the nicest carjacker? Which Clint Eastwood film is a secret remake of a dodgy ITV sitcom?

That last one has some context (kind of), as our Film of the Week is Michael Cimino's debut feature "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot". Aside from that it's a plethora of new releases with Bong Joon-Ho's "Okja" from Netflix, Ceyda Torun's "Kedi" from Youtube, and, erm, Edgar Wright's "Baby Driver" from Sony TriStar (come on granddad, get with the new school).

After that it's a trip to the beginning of Michael Cimino's career, which it turns out is just a couple of films before the end.

  • [BONUS EPISODE] Edinburgh International Film Festival 2017

Ryan and Aidan went to Edinburgh and all we got is this podcast minisode (we don't think you'll ever get that on a t-shirt).

In this special edition of Cinema Eclectica we join them as they discuss Terence Malick's "Song to Song", the Irish medieval thriller "Pilgrimage", Persona in Scotland with Gary Love's "The Dark Mile", mumblecore animation and former feature of our preview section in "My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea", and Kyoko Miyake's exploration of the Japanese obsession with girl bands in "Tokyo Idols".

Until next time, don't watch anything we wouldn't.

  • The Graduate + One Eyed Jack's + Harmonium + Slack Bay - Eclectica #118

Beachy Beachy Fun Times with the Rock

Rob and Graham go head to head after accidentally super-gluing their foreheads together.

It's a two-man show this week that starts with an uncharacteristically adorable preview before normal service resumes in Off the Shelf with the Western "One Eyed Jack's" from Arrow Academy, the Eastern "Harmonium" from Eureka/Masters of Cinema, and wherever the hell Bruno Dumont is in MUBI's "Slack Bay" - making it the Cinema Eclectica you know and love. Following our Question of the Week (about classic films you can't be bothered watching), it's time for our first ever re-release as Film of the Week - Mike Nichols' "The Graduate" which is now 50 years-old.

Will we go koo-koo-ca-choo for it?

  • Wilson + The Salesman + Mandy + Madhouse - Eclectica #117

    Joe Swanberg's Lens Cap

After a snap election, Cinema Eclectica agrees not to do any more strained political puns after the introduction.

Aside from that there’s some exciting news about future shows tucked away inside Ryan’s preview of "My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea", and a typically varied Off the Shelf. Graham takes us to a school for the deaf in Alexander Mackendrick’s "Mandy", Aidan takes us to a school for the death – yes! – in Ovidio G. Assonitis’ "Madhouse", and Rob reviews Asghar Farhadi's Oscar-winning "The Salesman", about which few jokes can be made.

After that the team gather to watch Woody Harrelson plays a volleyball on an island, (we think), in our Film of the Week - "Wilson", (look, I don’t do the research, I just write the previews).

  • Wonder Woman + Personal Shopper + My Life as a Courgette - Eclectica #116

    Post-Capitalist Sesame Street

We're no longer waiting for Gadot as Patty Jenkins’ long-awaited Wonder Woman is our Film of the Week. Can she save the world, and more importantly, the DC Cinematic Universe?

We also have a question of the week about opening titles and a chat about Film 4’s new budget statement that's much more interesting than you might think (admittedly it couldn’t possibly be duller than it sounds - but it's seriously good regardless). In between those it’s another B-sides show with a genre-mangling haul of films that have been released this year including the clay-animated social realism of "My Life as a Courgette", the retro-cop spoofery of "Mindhorn", the minimalist political horror that is "Personal Shopper", and whatever the hell "Prevenge" is.

Seriously, we have arguments about this and everything.

  • Peter Weir + Klown + Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge - Eclectica #115

    Pirates of the Carry On

    Witness us!

This week our Director's Lottery came up with Peter Weir's 1985 thriller "Witness", with Harrison Ford and a surprise Viggo. There's also a question about actors who have one good performance in them - and if your first thought was Adam Sandler then you should maybe give Aidan's preview a listen first.

Off the Shelf has an … erm … interesting week with Danish gross-out comedy "Klown" and a minority report about the latest "Pirates of the Caribbean" film, Salazar's Revenge (a.k.a "Dead Men Tell No Tales"). We've suffered for our art - now it's your turn!

  • Colossal + Cops Vs Thugs + We are X + King Arthur - Eclectica #114

    Cops Vs Goatzilla

Ever had one of those mornings? Anne Hathaway does in our Film or the Week - "Colossal" - when she finds out last night's drunken bender has somehow destroyed Seoul.

There's plenty of destruction in Off the Shelf with yakuza running amok in Kinji Fukasaku's "Cops vs Thugs", emotional devastation in Stephen Kijak's "We Are X", and serious damage to Warner Bros.'s bank balance in Guy Ritchie's "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword". Which of these directors is making a Backstreet Boys movie next? The answer may not surprise you!

We also have a preview fresh from Cannes with I Am Not A Witch (though we are apparently all Groot), and a delightfully silly Question of the Week. Titanic with kaiju sounds pretty good to us.

  • Alien Covenant + The Goose Steps Out + Born Free - Eclectica #113

    Neat Bourbons with Michael Fasshugger

Like the xenomorphs in the classic sci-fi horror franchise we’re changing our life cycle. This time Question of the Week bursts bloodily from the show’s chest before our Film of the Week, and the rest of the show raises a few more questions as our preview devolves into a round-table discussion that's anything but black-and-white. Meanwhile, Off the Shelf ponders who would win in a fight between a lion and a goose as Aidan covers the 1960s conservation darling "Born Free" and Ryan investigates the wartime Ealing farce "The Goose Steps Out". The answer (we note clickbaitily), may surprise you!

While we studiously ignore the question of whether “clickbaitily” is a word we get to grips with our Feature Presentation - Ridley Scott's "Alien: Covenant".

  • John Huston + Tampopo + Brain Damage - Eclectica #112

The Frasier Crane of Brain Eating Monsters

    Shame on us!

This week we reveal the classic films that we haven't seen, and look forward to the future classics that you'll be too busy to catch at this year's Cannes Film Festival. After that it's two very different dishes in a gourmet Off The Shelf, with Frank Henenlotter's "Brain Damage" (which is best watched on an empty stomach), and Juzo Itami's "Tampopo" (you'll never look at eggs the same way again). Seeing us out is classic film-noir from the inventor of the genre - John Huston's "The Asphalt Jungle".
