Sixty-nine years ago, Alec Ulmann’s dream to bring international endurance racing to the United States came true and continues to this day. At 10.10am on the 20th of March, the finest sports car teams will embark upon the 69th running of the 12 hours of Sebring. However, Sebring’s history has been as bumpy as its ancient concrete surface. Ulmann’s blueprint for the 12 hours of Sebring was inspired by the 24 hours of Le Mans. In the 1930s, Ulmann travelled to spectate at Le Mans in the days of the notorious Bentley boys. After the war, Ulmann was tasked by the Air Force to find a venue for repurposing surplus military aircraft. Hendrick Field’s long runways and ample hangar space fitted the bill.

In 2021 Larry ten Voorde won the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup and Porsche Carrera Cup Germany titles for the second time in a row. Lorcan Hanafin had a hugely successful 2021 season behind the wheel of the Porsche 991 Cup Car for JTR. The young Yorkshire driver finished second in the championship after one of the closet title races the Carrera Cup Great Britain has seen. Hanafin has now been selected to represent Porsche Motorsport GB in the Porsche Motorsport Junior shootout in Spain. He will face junior drivers from Porsche Carrera Cup Championships from around the world. The global Porsche Junior Shootout will be utilising the new 992 Cup Car for the first time this year ahead of its race introduction in 2022.

A short walk from Berlin’s Bradenberg gate, sat a most bizarre and terrifying racing circuit-Avus. In its most extreme form, Avus stretched for twelve miles and consisted of two endless straights. Bookended by a curve at either side, this road going superspeedway lay in the shadows of a city ravaged by political anguish.

Avus became one of the first roads on earth to be surfaced with asphalt and members of the public could take a lap for a modest ten Reichsmarks. Although racing began at the Berlin circuit in 1921, Avus gained its most notorious feature in 1936. 

 

While the circuit hosted the 1936 Berlin Olympics cycle races, the enormous banked North Curve was erected, ready for racing to return in 1937. At a towering 43 degrees, the North Curve banking was soon dubbed ‘The Wall of Death’. Grand prix machines from Mercedes and Auto Union could swoop through the North Curve almost flat out. In 1937, Bernd Rosemeyer lapped the 11.98-mile circuit in his Auto Union at a staggering 171.74 miles per hour. Thirty-one years passed before Graham Hill matched this dizzying speed at the 1968 Indianapolis 500.

Jamey Price is a motorsport and automotive photographer from Charlotte, North Carolina who's motorsport work has taken him to more than 17 countries, and around most of the continental United States.

 

Price's photography career began while competing as a thoroughbred steeplechase horse racing jockey and exercise rider in the United States, England and Ireland. During his racing career, Jamey rode more than 50 races and notched 11 wins in the saddle. Throughout that time, Price also covered his life in horse racing from behind the camera, taking photos between his races, and eventually self published a book titled "Chasing: Racing Life in England & Ireland."

 

In 2011, Jamey's photography career path switched from horses, to horse power. Since then, Price's unique and colorful images have been published around the world in magazines, newspapers and websites including The New York Times, HotRod, Hagerty, MAXIM, Car&Driver, CycleWorld, Road&Track, Autoweek, RACER, MotorTrend, Autosport, F1 Racing magazine, Motorsport Magazine, Formula1.com, Lamborghini.com, Top Gear.com, Blackbird Automotive Journal, Popular Mechanics, Sports Illustrated & ESPN and many others.

From 1966 to 1974, the unhinged Canadian American Challenge Cup (Can-Am) stirred innovation that has never been emulated. Can-Am’s rulebook was thinner than a political party pamphlet, enticing manufacturers like McLaren, Lola and eventually Porsche, to build ever more outrageous machines. 

Porsche’s assault on Can-Am was all-conquering. Partnered with Penske racing, Porsche unseated the undisputed Can-Am champions - McLaren. Driven by Mark Donohue and George Follmer, Penske’s Porsches were envied by the paddock. Porsche’s 917 Spyders won twelve of the seventeen events they entered. George Follmer became Can-Am champion in 1972 with the 917/10. Donohue followed in 1973 with the 917/30.

The collision twelve minutes before the end of the race in the FIA WEC season finale in Bahrain continues to cause discussions from both Porsche and Ferrari fans. Alessandro Pier Guidi met Michael Christensen in the last corner, who then spun off the track. Victory and title went to Ferrari in Italy. The protest was later rejected but Porsche has appealed the rejection of its protest, likely bringing the case to the FIA International Court of Appeal.

In 1955, James Dean was swiftly establishing himself as Hollywood’s brightest young star. By September of 1955, the cult hero was busy filming his latest movie ‘Giant’, following the successful production of ‘Rebel Without a Cause’. However, Dean’s attention had been grabbed by the exhilaration of racing Porsches. Sadly, Dean never took to the grid in his Porsche Spyder. 

James Dean’s all too brief motor racing journey began at the Palm Springs road races, in March 1955. Although this would be a club meeting, a few blockbuster names adorned the entry list. One such entrant was Ford GT driver-engineer, Ken Miles, driving an MG. Dean danced his new Porsche 356 Super Speedster through the field to win the preliminary race convincingly. In doing so, Dean qualified for the main event. News of Dean’s racing debut spread throughout Hollywood in no time. After all, James Dean was the name on everyone’s lips.
