Not every driver that takes to the grid at the 24 hours of Le Mans is receiving a salary to compete. In fact, a significant proportion of the grid will contribute vast sums of money to secure their place in a team. Doctors, stockbrokers, lawyers and entrepreneurs gather every June to share their common addiction for speed and competition. 

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, a cast of excessively funded amateurs appeared in American sports car racing. As it would transpire, Don and Bill Whittington, John Paul and Randy Lanier, were funding their racing illegally. All would be arrested for separate drug trafficking and tax evasion offences by the end of 1986.

Since 2017, Porsche Professional Matteo Cairoli has contested in the WEC, Le Mans, IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and this year also won the Nürburgring 24 Hours with Manthey-Racing.

In May 1948, rootlets emerged of a partnership which transcended endurance racing. In the hills surrounding the town of Gmünd in Austria, Ferry Porsche and his engineers tirelessly developed the first road car to carry the Porsche badge - the 356. Meanwhile, across the Atlantic in Illinois, Hurley Haywood arrived into the world. 

 

Hurley Haywood is unquestionably the finest endurance racer in history. Three wins across three decades at the 24 hours of Le Mans, two wins at the 12 hours of Sebring and a record equalling five outright triumphs at the 24 hours of Daytona. Born and raised in Guernsey, Seb Priaulx has been competing in motorsport for over a decade. Starting at just eight years old, the prodigious young talent claimed multiple karting titles before making the transition to car-racing in the Ginetta Junior Championship.

Winning the Winter Series title and finishing as overall vice-champion during a two year spell in that series, Priaulx went on to win races in single-seaters in the F4 British Championship before making the move into the British GT Championship in 2019 with Multimatic Motorsports.

A superb season saw Priaulx win two races and finish at the GT4 class vice-champion, before winning on his Michelin Pilot Challenge debut in the USA. His blossoming career will continue in 2020 and beyond after signing a multi-year deal with Multimatic Motorsports.

There may not have been the repeat of last year’s top five finish, but Ben Barker and the plucky GR Racing team once again went the distance in the world’s toughest endurance race, the Le Mans 24 Hours.

Both Barker and GR (formerly Gulf) Racing were making their sixth consecutive appearance at the Circuit de la Sarthe and were initially encouraged by the pre-event pace, not just of their #86 Porsche 911 RSR, but the Weissach marque’s entire representation in the 23-entry GTE-Am category. With a mammoth 61-car entry across four classes, overall honours were not the target, however, with team and driver both looking to better last season’s fifth in GTE-Am, and qualifying only served to raise expectations, as Barker put the distinctive black-and-orange Porsche into P2, achieving a personal goal of making it through to the ‘hyperpole’ shootout reserved for the fastest qualifiers in each class.
