In this episode, we chat with Meredith Simmerman, the founder and owner of Reney's Honey Butter. What started as a hobby after picking blackberries has blossomed into one of the best locally made products in the Mobile area, with over 60 unique flavors!

Meredith's creations, which include mouth-watering biscuits made with her signature honey butter, are unlike anything else in Mobile. From Cheesy Conecuh to Garlic Parmesan, her flavors are both innovative and delicious.

We also dive into Meredith's entrepreneurial journey, which has led to the creation of a food truck that can be found around town every Tuesday, a spud bar catering service, and fun events for kids throughout the year at her location in West Mobile!

On this episode, we are taking you across the bay to the Eastern Shore where you'll find one of the best seafood restaurants in our area,  Market By The Bay. 

Market by the Bay is a landmark in the Daphne area. They have been open for nearly 20 years on the Eastern Shore right off Interstate 10 and Highway 98 but recently underwent an ownership change and that’s where my guests today, Michael Sullivan and Garret DeLuca, have brought new life this landmark seafood restaurant. 

Micheal talks about growing up in the restaurant industry where his mom owned Delish Desserts in Midtown Mobile. Growing up in the industry has helped Michael hone his craft in the art of cooking. His creativity is now on full display at Market By The Bay. 

We talked about their Loaded Seafood Potato, Seafood Gumbo, Korean Fried Catfish Sandwich, Buffalo Shrimp Po-Boy, Creole White Beans and Rice topped with Fried Catfish. Roosevelt Patterson is a Mobile Sports Hall of Famer, a football state and national champion from the Vigor Wolves, a national champion from the 1992 Alabama Crimson Tide, 5th round NFL draft pick by the Los Angeles Raiders, but now-a-days you know him as the doorkeeper at Las Floriditas. 

Las Floriditas is a Cuban themed speakeasy in the basement of the RSA Trustmark Building in Downtown Mobile serving up authentic Cuban style dishes in a Hemingway themed atmosphere. Roosevelt is one who greets you when you arrive but only lets you enter if you have the password! 

We talk all about Roosevelt's journey as a football player locally at Vigor, to the University of Alabama, coming back to participate in the Senior Bowl, and his professional playing days in the NFL and CFL. He tells the story of how fate would have it that he landed the job as doorkeeper at Las Floriditas. He also talks about his newest project of mentoring young athletes. It's an episode you don't want to miss!

The Port City Plate Podcast presented by Bienville Bites Food Tour. The Port City Plate is a podcast featuring the food, history, and people of Mobile, Alabama and on today's episode we nailed all three with Joycelyn Davis! 

The Clotilda was the last known slave ship to enter U.S. soil in 1860, over 50 years after the slave trade had been abolished. The descendants of that ship still reside just north of Mobile in a community called, Africatown. 

Joycelyn Davis is the organizer of the "Spirit of our Ancestors Festival", a member of the Clotilda Descendants Association and has become the face of Africatown and the Clotilda Descendants. Joycelyn has been featured prominently in the Netflix documentary, Descendant. She has been featured in a 60 Minutes interview with Anderson Cooper, and she just returned from a trip to London where a screening of Descendant was showing at the historic Ritzy Cinema. 

We talk to Joycelyn about Africatown, the Clotilda, her descendants- Charlie and Maggie Lewis, growing up in Africatown, the future and tourism opportunities in Africatown and her conversation with former president, Barack Obama! We also talked food (GUMBO!), and get Joycelyn's thoughts on how a southern girl eats when she is traveling the world.

The Port City Plate Podcast presented by Bienville Bites Food Tour. Nick DiMario is a legendary innovator and leader in the restaurant industry here in the Mobile area. Nick is the operating partner of Panini Pete Hospitality Group where he operates Panini Pete's and Sunset Pointe in Fairhope, Squid Ink in Downtown Mobile, Ed's Seafood Shed in Spanish Fort, and more coming soon that you'll hear about for the first time on the episode. Nick was awarded the 2022 Alabama Restaurateur of the Year the day before this episode dropped. 

Nick grew up in Philadelphia (went to elementary school with Will Smith!) but made his way to Alabama as a walk-on football player at the University of Alabama. He worked for 27 years under the "wings" of Bob Baumhower and his restaurants throughout the state of Alabama before partnering with Panini Pete in 2013. 

In this episode, you'll hear all about the company culture, leadership training, and employee standards at Panini Pete's which is second to none in the restaurant industry. We talk about the new food hall, Parc Le Trailour that is coming soon plus some breaking news on a brand new waterfront restaurant they are taking over on the Eastern Shore called The Waterfront Restaurant.
