There have been 73 homicides in Portland in 2021, a record number before the year is even over. Three quarters of those deaths were caused by people wielding guns. Last month, Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler, who also serves as the city’s police commissioner, held a press conference on gun violence prevention. Some of his policy proposals include rehiring recently retired officers to fill vacancies at the Portland Police Bureau, while also beefing up recruitment efforts for new officers.
